[less ▲]

The larch is a really worth considering species in the walloon region especially in forests from which sustained management and multi-functional aspects are sought. Because of its rapid growth rate, its wood of high quality and its environmental effects (landscape) as well as its ecological impact (biodiversity enhancement, wildlife habitat improvement) larch has to pay a role in the achievement of most management purposes. However its silviculture in terms of method, severity and timing of thinning is not sufficiently related to its ecology and its high juvenile growth. Among the three larch species the hybrid larch is quite promising but adequate silviculture has to be applied during the course of its development. The present paper gives some guidelines for constructing silvicultural scenarios able to ensure economic returns and a proper balance between the non marketed forms of production like aesthetic value, biodiversity, game and recreation. Introduction. Meliponini and Apini contribute to the pollination of flowering plants and to improving agricultural yields. These bees’ diversity, distribution and abundance depend on the ecosystem in which they evolve. The present work aims to summarize the diversity, distribution, abundance, potential threats, challenges and issues faced with respect to these social bees in Africa. Literature. In Africa, there were 21 species of Meliponini and 2 species of Apini (Apis). Aspects related to the species diversity, distribution, biology, ecology and abundance of nests are poorly documented, especially for Meliponini. This deficit could be related to a lack of interest of the authors or the various difficulties in performing these studies in Africa. With regard to the difficulties, there is a need to clarify the taxonomy of Meliponini, and the observation of nests in certain forest environments is difficult. Nest predation and habitat loss are the main threats that could cause the depopulation of certain social bee species in Africa. If there is currently new evidence that diseases and pests did not endanger these bees, then there is a need for further studies for better assessment of the risks that are associated with these potential threats. Conclusions. Work on the diversity, distribution and abundance of the social bees must be strengthened to address the challenges that are related to these insects in Africa. Indeed, this approach will contribute to answering the challenges of sustainable management of the biodiversity and economic and agricultural issues. [less ▲]

Studied materials are of the Fe-C-Cr-X multi-component system where X represents a group of strong carbides formers as Mo, V, or Nb. These alloys are used for wear components. Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) was used to determine the melting and solidification behaviour of these materials. Raw material has a thermomecanical history that involved casting, heat treating and hot forming, which could be investigated by the melting sequence of the DTA trial. [less ▲]

Melting and crystallization of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) blended with polyamide 6 (PA6) has been studied by differential scanning calorimetry. The melting of PVDF and PA6 is observed over a small temperature range, i.e. 174 to 181 degrees C and 220 to 230 degrees C, respectively, over the whole blend composition. This observation indicates that PVDF and PA6 are immiscible and do not co-crystallize, although evidence for intermolecular interactions between PVDF and PA6 has been previously reported. Crystallinity of PVDF seems to decrease on addition of the first 30 wt% PA6, although this effect is not so different from the experimental errors. Kinetics of non-isothermal crystallization of pure PVDF and PVDF blends containing 20 and 40 wt% PA6 has been investigated. The crystallization rate of PVDF is not influenced by PA6 in the temperature range 138.5-145 degrees C. At lower temperatures, it is, however, adversely affected by addition of PA6. The non-isothermal crystallization data for PVDF are fitted by the Ozawa equation in the temperature range 131-141 degrees C. The Ozawa index, or Avrami exponent, for pure PVDF decreases from 3 to 1 on decreasing temperature. This observation agrees with the nucleation of PVDF crystals which is heterogeneous, and a decrease from 3 to 1 in the growth dimension. The main effect of PA6 is to restrict the decrease of the Avrami exponent from 3 to 2 on decreasing temperature, more likely due to a slower decrease in the growth dimension. PA6 does not contribute to nucleation although it is phase separated. [less ▲]

To study near-surface melt changes over the Greenland ice sheet (GrIS) since 1979, melt extent estimates from two regional climate models were compared with those obtained from spaceborne microwave brightness temperatures using two different remote sensing algorithms. The results from the two models were consistent with those obtained with the remote sensing algorithms at both daily and yearly time scales, encouraging the use of the models for analyzing melting trends before the satellite era (1958–1979), when forcing data is available. Differences between satellite-derived and model-simulated results still occur and are used here to identify (i) biases in the snow models (notably in the albedo parametrization, in the thickness of a snow layer, in the maximum liquid water content within the snowpack and in the snowfall impacting the bare ice appearance in summer) and (ii) limitations in the use of passive microwave data for snowmelt detection at the edge of the ice sheet due to mixed pixel effect (e.g., tundra or rock nearby the ice sheet). The results from models and spaceborne microwave sensors confirm a significant (p-value = 0.01) increase in GrIS surface melting since 1979. The melt extent recorded over the last years (1998, 2003, 2005 and 2007) is unprecedented in the last 50 yr with the cumulated melt area in the 2000's being, on the average, twice that of the 1980's.
