This work aims to establish the state of the art in the area of semiotic research on the role of the image in scientific discourse, a topic which has recently given rise to renewed interest in Francophone semiotics. The questions concerning the scientific image open up new perspectives for semiotic studies. The research revisits issues that are fundamental to all semiotic approaches (the concept of reference and the genesis of the plane of expression in visual texts, for example) and also leads to encounters between different semiotic traditions, such as those of Ch. S. Peirce, the Paris School, and the Groupe µ. Four questions appear crucial to the future of semiotics and reappear throughout the article : 1. the relation between the image and the techniques that produce it, which leads to considerations on the status of scientific reference ; 2. the relation between the image and mathematization, which allows us to deal with the question of the diagram and diagrammatic reasoning ; 3. the relation between “the image in the process of being made” in the laboratory and the image selected by scientific literature (“the finished image”) and especially the relation between a research article for specialized journals and works of popularization ; 4. finally, the consideration of the different discursive genres of scientific production leads us to reflections on the relation between popularization and the domain of art. This work wishes to study how two different media, painting and photography, react to the representation of the same theme, namely the theme of religion and transcendence. It will involve taking as objects of study four different cultural objects: 1) religious painting, 2) artistic photography with a religious theme, 3) devotional photography which is transformed into pious images, and 4) the Russian icon. We will analyse the filter-effect produced by these two media in the representation of religious themes. We will seek to explain why the religious theme in painting has been able to assume a sacred dimension which, contrastingly, seems inaccessible to contemporary artistic photography. [less ▲]

Biologically speaking, Sendai virus (SeV), the murine parainfluenza virus type 1, is perceived as a common respiratory pathogen that is endemic in many rodent colonies throughout the world. Currently it is believed that SeV is the leading cause of pneumonia in mice and together with the mouse hepatitis viruses, is the most prevalent and important of the naturally occurring infections of mice. The scientific community also considers SeV as the archetype organism of the Paramyxoviridae family because most of the basic biochemical, molecular and biologic properties of the whole family were derived from its own characteristics. Recently, scientific interest for this old pathogen has re-emerged, this time because of its potential value as a vector for gene transfer. This review aimed at drawing an exhaustive picture of this multifaceted pathogen. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. [less ▲]

The Paramyxoviridae family includes some of the most important and ubiquitous disease-causing viruses of infants and children, most of which cause significant infections of the respiratory tract. Evidence is accumulating in humans that genetic factors are involved in the severity of clinical presentation. As a first step toward the identification of the genes involved, this study was undertaken to establish whether laboratory mouse strains differ in susceptibility to Sendai virus, the murine counterpart of human type-1 parainfluenza virus which, historically, has been used extensively in studies that have defined the basic biological properties of paramyxoviruses in general. With this purpose in mind, double-chamber plethysmography data were collected daily for 7 days after inoculation of Sendai virus in six inbred strains of mice. In parallel, histological examinations and lung viral titration were carried out from day 5 to day 7 after inoculation. Pulmonary structure/function values closely reflected the success of viral replication in the lungs and revealed a pattern of continuous variation with resistant, intermediate, and susceptible strains. The results unambiguously suggest that BALB/c (resistant) and 129Sv (susceptible) strains should be used in crossing experiments aimed at identifying the genes involved in resistance to Paramyxoviridae by the positional cloning approach. In this paper, I examine the legal position of migrants - both of foreigners who have settled some time ago in Belgium and of Belgian citizens who have settled abroad. The focus is in particular on two issues which are of interest to elders and senior citizens, i.e. that of their successions (to whom will my assets be distributed after I pass away) and of the impact of mental or physical incapacity (what if I am unable to manage my assets). [less ▲]

This text tries to understand the social phenomenon by which young people from the working-class and the lower class, that is, young people from the bottom of social ladder, end up in educational pathways at the bottom of the hierarchy of the education system (especially vocational track in the French Community of Belgium). The first part analyzes two classical theoretical frameworks that allow studying school and vocational choices of working-class students. On the one hand, we study what we call “the prism of relegation”, formulated by reproduction theorists like Bourdieu and Passeron, in which the agency of the students is limited. On the other hand, we study the “prism of resistance” of Paul Willis, a prism that broke away from this “passive” perspective, taking into account both the agency and the capacity for resistance. With Willis‟s ethnographic work, it is demonstrated that working-class boys were not passive vis-à-vis the predominant ideology. As the result of a collective human practice, workshop culture provided individual life courses with a meaning, a direction and principles that justified low-qualified petty jobs. The second part of the text describes social transformations, like de-industrialization and the rise of the individualization process and their impact on both social structures and collective identities. With regards to such transformation, we argue that current theoretical perspectives have broken away from the “prism of resistance”. On the basis of the results of our fieldwork, the third part of the text argues that many young people from the working-class still enjoy a certain amount of social inheritance from their working-class culture. This, in turn, leads them towards the bottom of the school and social hierarchies [less ▲]

This study investigate the impact of the sense of coherence or SOC (1) on the commitment to health behaviors, as the participation in a revalidation program (physical training) after a first myocardial infarction. Fifteen subjects have been assessed three times after their myocardial infarction. The data indicate a possible effect of the sense of coherence which is higher among participants in comparison with subjects who refused to be involved in the program. [less ▲]
