Tectonic motion rates of individual faults and regional deformation in an intraplate setting are estimated, based on the analysis of ten yearly surveys of a regional levelling network in NE Ardenne (W Europe). Owing to the frequency and number of measurement epochs, much greater than in classical comparisons of general surveys, the tectonic and near-surface components of ground motion are clearly separated. The marked temporal variability in ground motion strongly depends on the amount of precipitation fallen during the six months preceding each survey and the subsequent drying off of the subsoil at the time of the surveys. Moreover, the ground response to this influence varies from place to place, leading to high differential movements at the local scale. Taking into account the percentage of surveyed faults which moved tectonically during the time of the study, I calculate fault motion rates of 0.06^0.09 mm/yr, similar to geological rates. Moreover, the data indicate that one way for intraplate normal faults to accommodate tectonic strain aseismically is intermittent fault creep, with short episodes of a few mm displacement separated by many year-long time intervals of fault quiescence. A flexural deformation shows the superposition of a tilt event on a trend corresponding to a tilt rate of 0.16 Wrad/yr for a 2.8-km-long segment. [less ▲]

The recent downward revision of the solar CNO photospheric abundances now leads to severe inconsistencies between theoretical models for the Sun's internal structure and the results of helioseismology. There have been claims that the solar Ne abundance may be underestimated and that an increase in this ill-defined quantity could alleviate (or even completely solve) this problem. To address the validity of this hypothesis, we present a fully homogeneous non-LTE abundance analysis of the optical Ne I/II lines in a sample of 18 nearby B-type stars. Our very preliminary results point towards a mean neon abundance slightly higher than the new solar value, but apparently insufficient by itself to restore the agreement between the solar models and the helioseismological constraints. A silicon field-effect transistor is operated as a logic circuit by electrically addressing the ground and excited electronic states of an embedded single dopant atom. Experimental results-complemented by analytical and computational calculations-are presented. First, we show how a complete set of binary logic gates can be realized on the same hardware. Then, we show that these gates can be operated in parallel on the very some dopant up to the logic level of a full adder. To use the device not as a switch but as a full logic circuit, we make essential use of the excited electronic states of the dopant and of the ability to shift their energy by gating. The experimental ability to use two channels to measure the current flowing through the device and the conductance (dI/dV) allows for a robust reading of the output of the logic operations. [less ▲]

Cette étude se penche sur un procédé cinématographique singulier, apparu dans les années 1905-1906 (même si quelques occurrences peuvent s'en repérer dès 1903) : ce qu'il est convenu d'appeler le "plan emblématique". Défini sommairement, le plan emblématique est un plan généralement non narratif, qui se plaçait soit en début, soit en fin de film. Placé en début de bande, pareil plan avait pour fonction essentielle de présenter le ou les personnages principaux ; disposé au contraire en fin de film, ce plan spécifique, souvent rapproché, avait pour but de marquer, de façon attractive, la clôture du récit. Emergeant alors que le cinéma s'engage résolument dans la voie de la narration, le plan emblématique est la marque de ce que les films se montrent de plus en plus soucieux de leurs propres limites ou extrémités, et cela au moment même où naît, historiquement parlant, le spectateur de cinéma.
