PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for synthesizing an alkoxyamine, and to provide a method for using the same in controlled radical polymerization. ; SOLUTION: This method for synthesizing the alkoxyamine expressed by general formula (I) or (II) [preferably, general formula (I)] comprises a one-pot process, wherein the process includes (1) reacting an oxidizing agent (A) with a sterically hindered secondary amine of general formula (III) in a water-containing medium to form a reaction product and an aqueous phase, (2) removing the aqueous phase, and (3) adding a free radical initiator (B) to the reaction product under such a condition that decomposition of the initiator is promoted to generate free radicals. Further, a method for polymerizing a monomer, namely the method for using the alkoxyamine synthesized by the method with originality, is provided [less ▲]

On the island of Cos, Zeus and Athena are honoured under five different epithets : Polieus/Polias, Machaneus/Machanis, Alseios/Alseia, Phatrios/Phatria and Sôter/Sôteira. This paper studies the epigraphical sources which inform us on these cults and aims to propose an interpretation on how these divine pairs work within the civic pantheon. Among these pairs, the cult of Zeus Polieus and Athena Polias, which seems to be crucial, will be specifically addressed. This paper will also replace these cults in the historical context of the city, i.e. the synoecism, compare the case of Cos with Rhodes and Athens, and ask various related questions, such as the problem of the “poliad” deities. CLINICAL REPORT: A clinical report of a contact lenses wearer with Acanthamoeba keratitis pointed out the diagnosis problem. The medical treatment is needed previously to any surgery. Finally the patient underwent enucleation. DISCUSSION: The authors are considering the microbiological aspects and laboratory techniques are described. CONCLUSION: For this very severe but hopefully rare pathology, the sooner the treatment the best. A therapeutic approach is described. [less ▲]

The authors presents one case of primitive corneal mycobacterium keratitis after corneal graft. This rare form of keratitis is analysed in the field of mycobacterial infections who's nowadays more developed in our industrialised countries. The description of the case point out the multiresistance of this mycobacterium and describe the different treatments. [less ▲]

A 83 years old patient was admitted with a complex clinical picture including cutaneous rash, muscular pain, rhabdomyolysis and renal failure. The clinical picture suggests a dermatopolymyositis. Despite of high dose corticotherapy, the patient died on day 22. The anatomical examination shows a cholangiocarcinoma disseminated locally as well as in the lungs and bones. [less ▲]

It is important to establish clear definitions concerning carotid artery disease, a topic that recently regained widespread interest in medical literature. Therefore, we summarize a paper of Rothwell and Barnett, recently published in the Lancet 2003 (1). In their analysis, the data of three randomized trials, comparing carotid endarterectomy to optimal medical therapy alone for a symptomatic internal carotid artery stenosis, were pooled after standardization of the measurement of the degree of stenosis and redefinition of the outcome events, to achieve comparability of the results of each trial. This analysis concerns 6092 patients with 35,000 patient-years of follow-up. Surgery offers a marginal benefit for patients with a moderate (50-69%) symptomatic carotid artery stenosis (absolute risk reduction of 4.6% for subsequent ipsilateral stroke at 5 years). Surgery is highly beneficial for patients with a symptomatic 70-99% stenosis (absolute risk reduction of 16% for ipsilateral stroke at 5 years). The benefit is uncertain for a symptomatic "near occlusion" (99% with retarded opacification of the distal internal carotid artery): absolute risk reduction of -1.7% for ipsilateral stroke at 5 years).
