We studied the morphological properties of isolated galaxies samples in dependence on the isolation parameter and properties of primary catalogs. With this aim we identified the samples of single and isolated galaxies from SDSS DR5 (Single and QIsol) with the 3D Voronoi tessellation method (Elyiv et al. 2009). We found that in comparison with other samples of isolated galaxies, the QIsol sample contains an excess of late-type galaxies, especially with a low luminosity and BCG/Im/Irr morphology. We also showed that the fractions of early type galaxies in QIsol SDSS DR5 sample and samples 2MIG (Karachentseva et al. 2010) and CIG (Karachentseva et al. 1973; Hernandez-Toledo et al. 2008) are in a good agreement (16-19 %), but Allam's (Allam et al. 2005) and Prada's (Prada et al. 2003) SDSS DR1 samples show a higher excess of the early type galaxies that can be explained by the selection criteria and morphology definition method. We found a weak relation between isolation parameter and color index for the Single sample that may indicate that even in the low dense environment the morphology density relation is observed. We conclude that morphological properties of the resulting sample of isolated galaxies are highly dependent on the primary catalogue from which the galaxies were selected. Moreover, the selection criterion is also important but plays a secondary role in the resulting morphological content, color indices distribution and other parameters of the isolated galaxy samples. Only four galaxies are common in the 2MIG, QIsol, and CIG samples, namely UGC5184, UGC6121, UGC8495, and UGC9598, that allows to consider them as really most isolated galaxies. [less ▲]

The F1 hybrids of roach Rutilus rutilus, silver bream Blicca bjoerkna, and common bream Abramis brama from experimental reciprocal cross-breedings were identified at 18 months of age in relation to the parental species. The morphological analysis, including quantitative (plastic and meristic) and nonmetric features differing in the roach, the silver bream and the common bream, revealed that roach * common bream and roach * silver bream hybrids were easier to distinguish from their parents than silver bream * common bream hybrids. These roach hybrids had many morphological similarities such as the upper iris coloured in red as in the roach, and they were morphologically intermediate to the two parents. This contrasted with the silver bream * common bream hybrids, in which intermediate characteristics were also observed, but with some parental variants. Roach * silver bream hybrids were distinguishable from roach * common bream hybrids by its large eye, its lower scale numbers along the lateral line and its two rows of pharyngeal teeth. Silver bream * common bream hybrids, compared to the two other types of hybrids studied, had higher anal fin soft ray numbers and a clear eye iris with a median black line. In all interspecific crosses of these three cyprinid species fish, the reciprocal hybrids were generally indistinguishable. [less ▲]

Among other applications, magnesium hydroxide is commonly used as a flame-retardant filler in composite materials, as well as a precursor for magnesium oxide refractory ceramic. The microstructure of the powder is of prime importance in both technical applications. The influence of synthesis parameters on the morphological characteristics of magnesium hydroxide nanoparticles precipitated in dilute aqueous medium was studied. Several parameters were envisaged such as chemical nature of the base precipitant, type of counter-ion, temperature and hydrothermal treatment. Special attention was given to the obtaining of platelet-shaped, nanometric and de-agglomerated powders. The powders were characterized in terms of particle size distribution, crystal habits, morphology and ability to be redispersed in water. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nitrogen adsorption and laser diffusion analyses were used for this purpose. Because of the morphological variation of the fossil remains, fossil species is a very difficult notion to define in palaeontology. This definition is effectively confronted to numerous problems such as body size polymorphism inside a natural population, co-existence of lineages with different morphotypes in a same species. Interestingly, paleogenetics can clarify such ambiguous situations. Size polymorphism and sexual dimorphism were particularly highly pronounced in Ursid populations. Taking as an illustration the extinct populations of brown bear in North Africa, we succeed in addressing the mitochondrial genetic diversity of these Atlas bears and the sexual dimorphism of these samples using molecular typing We are confident that these results will give useful information to palaeontologists in order to revisit the Atlas bears taxonomy and that this approach should be extended to other complex cases of palaeontological species. Two morphological forms of black rats (Rattus cf. rattus) were found living in sympatry in high-altitude dense forests of the Nilgiri Mountains, South India. The 1st one, often brown- or gray-bellied, also is found commensal in lowland settlements and represents Rattus rattus cf. rufescens (Gray 1837), with a diploid number (2N) of 38 chromosomes. The 2nd form, which has most often a pure white belly, has 2N 5 42 chromosomes and is referable to Rattus r. satarae Hinton, 1918, based on morphological comparison with the holotype. A multidisciplinary study indicates that these 2 forms are characterized by clear-cut differences in biochemistry (electrophoresis of homologous isozymes), molecular sequences (mitochondrial and nuclear DNA), and chromosomes (detailed banding analysis). All these data, coupled to diagnostic morphological characteristics, support the hypothesis that Rattus satarae and Rattus rattus are separate, sympatric species, with no gene flow between them. Their similar external morphology is interpreted as the result of convergence through occupying the same ecological niche. [less ▲]

La morphologie mathématique englobe différentes techniques de filtrage aussi variées qu'originales. Parmi l'imposante panoplie des filtres se distinguent ceux qui sont nés de la morphologie à seuillage, encore appelée morphologie floue, très en vogue à l'heure actuelle. Ce document s'inscrit dans ce courant. Nous y définissons le concept central d'érosion partielle, simple transcription d'une opération déjà connue, pour l'étendre ensuite aux notions de dilatation, d'ouverture et de fermeture partielles. À l'inverse des développements récents en ce domaine, c'est l'aspect géométrique qui y tient le haut du pavé; les opérations partielles se conçoivent comme des interactions entre objets et non en termes de lois de probabilité. Elles conduisent à une série de procédés de lissage des contours d'images binaires gérés par un seuil unique et une famille d'éléménts structurants adaptés à l'application. Des techniques similaires sont évoquées pour des images en niveaux de gris. Nous introduisons ensuite le nouveau concept de polymorphisme d'un point. Ce dernier indique pour chaque point le nombre d'éléments structurants qui contiennent ce point. C'est par son entremise que pourront s'appliquer des procédés d'optimisation de filtrage puisqu'il fournit une mesure analytique. [less ▲]

L'émission aurorale principale sur Jupiter est associée à des courants alignés liés à la diminution radiale de la vitesse de rotation du plasma magnétosphérique. Elle présente une structure complexe qui n'est uniforme en temps local ni en épaisseur, ni en intensité, ni en position dans le plan équatorial. L'objectif de ce mémoire est l'étude des variations de morphologie le long de cette émission. Cette étude est basée sur l'analyse d'images UV des aurores de Jupiter récoltées par le Télescope Spatial Hubble lors de différentes campagnes d'observations entre 1997 et 2007. L'analyse réalisée porte sur les variations d'épaisseur, d'intensité et de position de l'émission principale en fonction du temps local. L'étude montre certains changements systématiques de la structure aurorale en fonction du temps local, dont une intensité faible en matinée et une épaisseur plus élevée dans l'après-midi. De plus, la source de l'émission principale s'avère être plus éloignée l'après-midi, indiquant une rupture de corotation se produisant à des distances plus grandes dans cette région. Afin de comprendre l'origine de ces changements morphologiques, les résultats sont finalement comparés avec des simulations de la magnétosphère de Jupiter et avec les observations in situ de la sonde Galileo en orbite autour de la planète géante. Cette étude démontre que les variations en temps local de l'émission principale sont liées aux inhomogénéités en temps local du champ magnétique, du système de courants et de la distribution du flux de plasma dans la magnétosphère jovienne. L’étude de l’entomofaune des associations culturales prenant en compte le safoutier a permis de mettre en évidence des fortes abondances et une diversité des familles entomologiques. Au niveau des ravageurs majeurs, nous avons caractérisé un lépidoptère (tortricidae) dont les larves minent les noyaux des fruits du safoutier (Dacryodes edulis) et peuvent induire une chute prématurée d’au moins 25% de fruits. Toutes petites, les larves sont blanches et tachetées de points noirs, puis dans leur dernier stade, elles sont roses avec la tête, les plaque anale et prothoracique brunes. La chrysalide se forme dans un cocon de soie blanc. Elle est brune au départ et noir en fin de nymphose, et se caractérise par un crémaster noir proéminent au milieu de deux paires de soie recourbées à leurs extrémités. La nymphose dure au moins 20 jours. L’adulte est un paillon gris terne. Outre le safoutier, ce lépidoptère a été trouvé dans les fruits de Pseudopdondias longifolia. Des investigations ultérieures révéleront certainement d’autres plantes hôtes et permettront d’envisager une lutte biologique efficiente contre cette mineuse des fruits. [less ▲]
