This paper presents a new rationale for delegation. In a repeated relationship, when the principal gives up at time t the control over an action to the better informed agent, the decision taken by the agent signals his private information to the principal. The revelation of information is valuable to the principal only in a context of repeated relation where the principal can use the information at time t + 1 to take another decision. In this paper, we present an example where delegation occurs only if the relation lasts for more than one period. In a single period context, if the agent has a bias in favor of one project, he does not have incentives to select a project that is not his preferred one; hence he does not disclose his private information and delegation is not valuable. While in a repeated relationship, it becomes costly for the agent to keep the principal non-informed and this counterbalances the agent’s bias for one project. Shared-control (partial delegation) is then the preferred organizational structure when the interaction is repeated. Moreover, shared-control dominates an alternative mechanism where the principal centralizes all the decisions and the information is transferred through a message game. [less ▲]

BACKGROUND: Speech–language therapists (SLTs) are encouraged to implement evidence-based practice (EBP). Nevertheless, EBP use by practitioners can be questioned. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to explore Belgian French-speaking SLTs’ information behaviour and their awareness of EBP. The collected data allow one to determine how far they have embraced this approach. METHODS: The two Belgian French-speaking SLT professional associations promoted an online questionnaire survey by email. Additionally, clinical supervisors of students were asked to participate. In March 2012, 2068 emails were sent. RESULTS: The participation rate was at least 20% (n = 415). The reported information needs mainly concerned treatment or diagnosis. Most of the time, to attempt to fulfil their information needs, SLTs relied on their own resources (personal experience and libraries) and on colleagues in the workplace. When they searched on the Internet, they preferred to use a general search engine rather than a specialised bibliographic database. Barriers to obtaining scientific information are highlighted. Only 12% of the respondents had already heard about EBP. CONCLUSION: This study provides the first overview of the information behaviour of SLTs working in the French community of Belgium. Several recommendations are suggested for SLTs and librarians. [less ▲]

Abstract (Summary) The current study focuses on how information technology allows retailers to deliver services by means of information kiosks. A series of exploratory interviews were conducted with key informants in the retail and other sectors in Belgium and France. Subsequently, 84 customers and 9 retailers were surveyed. The findings suggest that information kiosks can be implemented successfully with up to three easy-to-use kiosks at the entrance to a mall or inside a store, and, if retailers allow, limited internet access to a small number of web sites. To be successful, kiosk information must be constantly updated and relevant, and the focus of offerings available through the kiosks should be limited. Future research should more thoroughly examine what customers want from an information kiosk so that a balance may be struck between being technology-led and being customer-led. Other technologies like voice recognition may be worth examining in connection with information kiosks. [less ▲]

Although universities are providing more and more information literacy training for their undergraduate students, the students’ real level of information literacy at the beginning of their studies has never been assessed. Hence EduDOC has decided to team up with the CIUF ‘Library’ Commission in order to organize a wide study aiming at objectively describing this initial level of information literacy, at identifying the students’ main weaknesses, as well as allowing instructors to adjust their training on this basis. The questionnaire was based on a similar study carried out in Québec and contains 20 questions grouped in five themes relating to information search steps. It was sent in September 2007 to a random sample of students entering a higher education institution in the French Speaking Community of Belgium for the first time. The students’ rather poor results confirm that organizing an information literacy program is imperative if students are to perform well in their studies. [less ▲]
