Amphiphilic copolymers consisting of an animated hydrophobic block and a hydrophilic poly(sodium methacrylate) one have been synthesized with different structures and tested as stabilizers for aqueous dispersions of alumina coated titanium dioxide (80 wt.-% solid). The dispersion stability is ruled by the strength of the anchoring of the aminated block onto the pigment and by the dynamics of the micelles formed by the copolymer. Any decrease in the anchoring strength, for example as a result of higher steric hindrance for the adsorbing block or of random rather than blocky distribution of the aminated co-units, is detrimental to the dispersion stability and makes this stability more dependent on the copolymer composition. Indeed, the position and dynamics of the unimers micelles equilibrium then control the adsorption of the copolymer on the pigment during the grinding process. [less ▲]

Pityrosporoses encompass various Malassezia-driven conditions. Dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis are members of this family of disorders. Their precise pathomechanisms have not been completely elucidated so far. This review focuses on the role of corneocytes in these disorders. Malassezia yeasts are not evenly distributed at the surface of the stratum corneum. Rather, they are clumped on some corneocytes while other corneocytes in their vicinity are almost free of these microorganisms. The corneocytes heavily coated by yeasts suggest a cell-related defect in the mechanisms controlling the skin biocene including the natural antimicrobial peptides and nitric oxide. Most environmental factors influencing pityrosporoses indeed affect the natural human defenses against certain microorganisms. We frame as a hypothesis that the primary defect in some Malassezia-driven disorders resides in the corneocytes and their precursor keratinocytes. [less ▲]

This work reveals the preponderance of an intramolecular metal chelation phenomenon in a controlled radical polymerization system involving the reversible trapping of the radical chains by a cobalt complex, i.e. the bis(acetylacetonato)cobalt(II). The cobalt-mediated radical polymerization (CMRP) of a series of N-vinyl amides was considered in order to evidence the effect of the cobalt chelation by the amide moiety of the last monomer unit of the chain. The latter reinforces the cobalt-polymer bond in the order N-vinylpyrrolidone < N-vinyl caprolactam < N-methyl-N-vinyl acetamide, and is responsible for the optimal control of the polymerizations observed for the last two monomers. Such a double linkage between the controlling agent and the polymer, via a covalent bond and a dative one, is unique in the field of controlled radical polymerization and represents a powerful opportunity to fine tune the equilibrium between latent and free radicals. The possible hydrogen bond formation is also taken into account in the case of N-vinyl acetamide and N-vinyl formamide. These results are essential for understanding factors influencing a Co-C bond strength in general, and the CMRP mechanism in particular, but also for developing a powerful platform for the synthesis of new precision poly(N-vinyl amide)s, an important class of polymers which sustains numerous applications today. Cobalt mediated radical polymerization (CMRP) of vinyl acetate (VAc) follows a reversible termination mechanism when initiated from a preformed alkyl-cobalt(III) complex. In these particular conditions, CMRP functions as a stable free radical process and fine tuning of the Co-C bond strength becomes crucial. Increase of temperature and addition of molecules, such as water, dimethylformamide and dimethylsulfoxide, able to coordinate the cobalt complex appeared as efficient strategies to weaken the Co-C bond and thus to speed up the polymerization while maintaining a very good control of the VAc polymerization. The key role of metal-coordination was investigated by kinetic measurements combined with DFT calculations. [less ▲]

The past years have seen an almost-exponentially increasing number of published papers in the ORC research field. This profusion of publications sometimes makes it difficult to get a global picture of the main challenges and ongoing research. Recent literature has also been characterized by a certain lack of originality, the same methods and approaches being repeated multiple times with few new relevant insights. It is therefore of primary importance to highlight the state-of-the-art and foster new and original research, potentially resulting in new technological improvements. This keynote provides an overview of the state of the art and of the main research trends in ORC power systems. It does not aim at covering all research fields, but highlights and describes a few relevant topics originating from the previous ORC conferences and from the scientific literature. The main methods, mathematical tools and results are described in such a way to provide useful information for the replication of such studies. Recommendations are finally formulated, together with an open discussion regarding possible relevant future contributions in ORC research. [less ▲]
