[more ▼] Thermo-sensitive nanosized structures have been prepared in water from poly(methyl vinyl ether)-block-poly(isobutyl vinyl ether) (PMVE-b-PIBVE) block copolymers. The composition and the architecture (diblock and triblock architectures) of the PMVE-b-PIBVE copolymers have been varied. The investigated copolymers had an asymmetric composition with a major PMVE block, While the PIBVE blocks are hydrophobic, the PMVE blocks are hydrophilic at room temperature and become hydrophobic above their demixing temperature (around 36 degrees C) as a result of the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behavior. At room temperature, the amphiphilic copolymers aggregate in water above a critical micelle concentration, which has been experimentally measured by hydrophobic dye solubilization. The hydrodynamic diameter of the structures formed above the cmc has been measured by dynamic light scattering (DLS) while their morphology has been studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). H-1 NMR measurements in D2O at room temperature reveal that the aggregates contain PIBVE insoluble regions surrounded by solvated PMVE chains. These investigations have shown that polydisperse spherical micelles are formed for asymmetric PMVE-b-PIBVE copolymers containing at least 9 IBVE units. For copolymers containing less IBVE units, loose aggregates are formed. Finally, the thermo-responsive, reversible properties of these structures have been investigated. Above the cloud point of the copolymers, the loose aggregates precipitate while the micelles form large spherical structures. [more ▼] Summary Background The primary end-point in the management of asthma is to obtain optimal control. The aim of this study was to assess the relationships between the markers of airway inflammation (sputum eosinophilia and exhaled nitric oxide), bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR) and asthma control. Methods One hundred and thirty-four patients were recruited from our asthma clinic between January 2004 and September 2005 [mean age: 42 years, mean forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV(1)): 86% predicted]. Eighty-six of them were treated by inhaled corticosteroids, 99 were atopic and 23 were current smokers. They all underwent detailed investigations including fractional-exhaled nitric oxide (FE(NO)) measurement, sputum induction and methacholine challenge when FEV(1) was >70% predicted, and filled in a validated asthma control questionnaire (ACQ6 Juniper). Results When dividing patients into the three groups according to their level of asthma control determined by ACQ [well-controlled asthma (ACQ score </=0.75), borderline (0.75<ACQ score <1.5) and uncontrolled asthma (ACQ score >/=1.5)], it appeared that uncontrolled asthmatics had a greater BHR to methacholine and sputum eosinophilia than controlled asthma (P<0.05, P<0.001, respectively). By contrast, we failed to show significant differences in the FE(NO) levels between the groups. With receiver-operating characteristic curves for differentiating uncontrolled (ACQ>/=1.5) from controlled and borderline (ACQ<1.5) asthma, sputum eosinophilia and methacholine responsiveness were found to be more accurate than FE(NO) (area under the curve: 0.72, 0.72 and 0.59, respectively). Conclusion In a broad spectrum of asthmatics encountered in clinical practice, sputum eosinophilia and methacholine bronchial hyperresponsiveness, but not FE(NO), are associated with uncontrolled asthma. [more ▼] The association between Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and classical Hodgkin's lymphoma (cHL) varies according to the geographic location. In this work we sought to characterize EBV involvement in a series of 111 cHL cases diagnosed in Belgium. The overall prevalence of EBV infection detected by in situ hybridization in Reed-Sternberg cells was 33%. EBV positivity correlated with older age at diagnosis (454 years; p = 0.01), mixed cellularity subtype (p = 0.000001), male gender (p = 0.004) and tended to be associated with higher clinical stage (III/IV; p = 0.02). The molecular features of the virus in EBV-positive cHL were studied by comparison with a series of reactive tonsils. A 30-bp deletion within the LMP-1 gene was in 15/28 (53.6%) EBV-positive cHL cases, and in 41.7% of reactive tonsil samples. This variant did not correlate with any clinical or pathological feature. The EBV strain was type A in all cHL and reactive samples. [more ▼] This study aimed at investigating the brain correlates of trait emotional intelligence. Trait emotional intelligence (trait EI) is a constellation of emotion-related traits, capturing the extent to which people experience, attend to, identify, understand, regulate, and utilize their emotions and those of others. As previous studies have provided converging evidence that frontal asymmetries were one of the determinants of emotion dispositions and behaviors, and as observations on individuals with a high level of emotional intelligence parallel those on people with a left-sided frontal cortical asymmetry in nearly every respect, we hypothesized that the level of emotional intelligence might be associated with differential frontal activation. Results supported the hypothesis: the pattern of resting electroencephalographic (EEG) activation recorded in the frontal areas was significantly associated with emotional intelligence. Individuals with higher trait EI evidence greater resting left frontal activation. [more ▼] Despite improvement of techniques, semen of 20% of stallions remains unfreezable. Recent studies focused on impact of reactive oxygen species and oxidant enzymes on semen characteristics. Myeloperoxidase (MPO) is a pro-oxidant enzyme contained in and released by neutrophils during degranulation or after cell lysis. It is responsible for the formation of hypochlorous acid, a strong oxidant agent which could damage spermatozoa. The aim of this study was to determine the relation between MPO concentration and characteristics of frozen semen from stallions. Thirty five straws from different stallions were analyzed. Post-thawing spermatozoal concentration, progressive and total motility were determined by CASA. Freezability was determined according to post-thawing progressive motility (over or under 15%). Percent of alive spermatozoa and abnormal forms were determined after Eosin-Nigrosin and Diff-Quick® staining respectively. Post-thawing MPO concentration was measured by ELISA. Our study shows that frozen thawed semen contains large amounts of free MPO. We also observed that post-thawing MPO ELISA assay can be used as an indicator of equine semen freezability. High MPO concentration samples showed lower total and progressive motility. A higher proportion of abnormal head shape associated with acrosome reaction was observed in our late examinations of the high concentration MPO group. Our results show that MPO adversely affects total and progressive motility of equine semen. A negative correlation between normal motile forms and MPO concentration was also observed. The effect of MPO on dead or abnormal forms remains to be precised.
