Context. The high-angular-resolution capability of the new-generation ground-based adaptive-optics camera SPHERE at ESO VLT allows us to assess, for the very first time, the cratering record of medium-sized (D~100-200 km) asteroids from the ground, opening the prospect of a new era of investigation of the asteroid belt's collisional history. Aims. We investigate here the collisional history of asteroid (6) Hebe and challenge the idea that Hebe may be the parent body of ordinary H chondrites, the most common type of meteorites found on Earth (~34% of the falls). Methods. We observed Hebe with SPHERE as part of the science verification of the instrument. Combined with earlier adaptive-optics images and optical light curves, we model the spin and three-dimensional (3D) shape of Hebe and check the consistency of the derived model against available stellar occultations and thermal measurements. Results. Our 3D shape model fits the images with sub-pixel residuals and the light curves to 0.02 mag. The rotation period (7.274 47 h), spin (343 deg,+47 deg), and volume-equivalent diameter (193 +/- 6km) are consistent with previous determinations and thermophysical modeling. Hebe's inferred density is 3.48 +/- 0.64 g.cm-3 , in agreement with an intact interior based on its H-chondrite composition. Using the 3D shape model to derive the volume of the largest depression (likely impact crater), it appears that the latter is significantly smaller than the total volume of close-by S-type H-chondrite-like asteroid families. Conclusions. Our results imply that (6) Hebe is not the most likely source of H chondrites. Over the coming years, our team will collect similar high-precision shape measurements with VLT/SPHERE for ~40 asteroids covering the main compositional classes, thus providing an unprecedented dataset to investigate the origin and collisional evolution of the asteroid belt. This paper extends previous work on structural optimization with the eXtended Finite Element Method (X-FEM) and the Level Set description of the geometry. The proposed method takes advantage of fixed mesh approach by using an X-FEM structural analysis method and from the geometrical shape representation of the Level Set description. In order to allow the optimization of complex geometries represented with a Level Set description, we apply here a Constructive Solid Geometry (CSG) approach with the Level Set geometrical representation. Hence, this extension allows to optimize any boundary of the structure that is defined with a coumpound Level Set. Design variables are the parameters of basic geometric primitives which are described with a Level Set representation and/or the control points of the NURBS curves that act as the definition of an advanced Level Set primitive. The number of design variables of this formulation remains small whereas global (i.e. compliance or eigenfrequency) and local constraints (i.e. stresses) can be considered. Our results illustrate that fixed grid optimization with X-FEM coupled to a Level Set geometrical description is a promising technique to achieve structural shape optimization. [less ▲]

For simple storey buildings, the structural behaviour in case of fire is relevant only for the safety of the firemen. The protection of occupants and goods is a matter of fire spread, smoke propagation, active fire fighting measures and evacuation facilities. Brittle failure, progressive collapse and partial failure of façades elements outwards may endanger the fire fighters and have to be avoided. In order to deal with such an objective, the simulation softwares has to cover the 3D structural behaviour including membrane and restrained effects as well as the failure mode so that post-local failure stage can be analysed. Such calculation models (ANSYS, ABAQUS and SAFIR [1]) have been compared true a benchmark. In this benchmark, two different users used ABAQUS. [less ▲]

In this study, a 3D thermal model of laser cladding by powder injection applied to Ti-6Al-4V is developed. The manufactured part is made of a Ti-6Al-4V substrate on which successive layers of laser melted powder are added, leading to a thick deposit. The computed temperature field and its time evolution are compared to experimental measurements. The temperature distribution in the substrate allows the prediction of the depths of the melt pool and the heat affected zone. Correlations between simulated thermal histories and the final microstructure in the thick deposit are established, leading to the enhancement of a dynamic shift of the critical transformation points due to high thermal rates during laser processing. The nature of the phases present within the deposit is discussed. [less ▲]

The 3-dimensional, non-linear, baroclinic, GHER mathematical model for the study of mesoscale motions (time scale of several hours to several days: tides, storm surges, ...) is described. Particular attention is paid to the turbulent closure based on an evolution equation for the turbulent kinetic energy and a parametric expression of the mixing length (k-model). Appropriate boundary conditions and numerical techniques (mode-splitting, implicity, sigma-coordinate system, advection scheme) are described. The model is applied to the simulation of the M2 tide on the North-Western European Continental Shelf not only without wind but also in typical winter and summer conditions. Large spatial variations of the turbulent kinetic energy appear as a result of the variations of depth and tidal activity around the shelf. These variations are clearly related to the different turbulence regimes observed in summer, with frontal structures separating well-mixed waters from stratified ones. The structure and evolution of the vertical profiles of turbulence variables are described and explained in barotropic and baroclinic conditions, under different wind forcings. The evolution of these profiles at the M2 tide frequency largely depends on the eccentricity of the tidal ellipse. [less ▲]

Outcomes for neurosurgery patients can be improved by enhancing intraoperative navigation and guidance. Current navigation systems do not accurately account for intraoperative brain deformation. So far, most studies of brain deformation have focused on brain shift, whereas this paper focuses on the brain deformation due to retraction. The heart of our system is a 3D nonrigid registration technique using a biomechanical model driven by the deformations of key surfaces tracked between two intraoperative images. The key surfaces, e.g., the whole-brain region boundary and the lips of the retraction cut, thus deform due to the combination of gravity and retractor deployment. The tissue discontinuity due to retraction is handled via the eXtended Finite Element Method (XFEM), which has the appealing feature of being able to handle arbitrarily shaped discontinuity without any remeshing. Our approach is shown to significantly improve the alignment of intraoperative MRI. [less ▲]

In many fields of geotechnical engineering, the modelling of interfaces requires special numerical tools. This paper presents the formulation of a 3D fully coupled hydro-mechanical finite element of interface. The element belongs to the zero-thickness family and the contact constraint is enforced by the penalty method. Fluid flow is discretised through a three-node scheme, discretising the inner flow by additional nodes. The element is able to reproduce the contact/loss of contact between two solids as well as shearing/sliding of the interface. Fluid flow through and across the interface can be modelled. Opening of a gap within the interface influences the longitudinal transmissivity as well as the storage of water inside the interface. Moreover the computation of an effective pressure within the interface, according to the Terzaghi’s principle creates an additional hydro-mechanical coupling. The uplifting simulation of a suction caisson embedded in a soil layer illustrates the main features of the element. Friction is progressively mobilised along the shaft of the caisson and sliding finally takes place. A gap is created below the top of the caisson and filled with water. It illustrates the storage capacity within the interface and the transversal flow. Longitudinal fluid flow is highlighted between the shaft of the caisson and the soil. The fluid flow depends on the opening of the gap and is related to the cubic law. [less ▲]
