BACKGROUND: Several papers have reported an association of high CA125 serum levels with advanced non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) as well as a relationship between high CA125 values and poor outcome. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Ninety-nine patients with NHL or Hodgkin's disease (HD) underwent serum CA125 assessment at diagnosis. Gender, age, presence of B symptoms, performance status (PS), histology, sites of tumor involvement, presence of effusion, clinical stage, age-adjusted International Prognostic Index, C-reactive protein (CRP), Hb, lactate deshydrogenase (LDH) and beta2-microglobulin were evaluated for their association with serum CA125 levels. The impact of CA125 levels and other features on overall (OS) and progression-free (PFS) survival was also assessed. RESULTS: CA125 serum levels were elevated in 34% of the patients, including 19% of patients with aggressive NHL, 45% of patients with indolent NHL, and 29% of patients with HD. Univariate analyses showed that CA125 levels correlated with poor PS, the presence of B symptoms, advanced clinical stage, abdominal, bone marrow or mediastinal involvement, presence of effusions, high aaIPI, low Hb levels and high CRP, LDH or beta2-microglobulin levels. In multivariate analysis, bone marrow involvement, the presence of effusions, and high aaIPI were all associated with high CA125 serum levels. In univariate analyses, OS and PFS were affected by age (PFS only), poor PS, B symptoms, advanced clinical stage, bone marrow or abdominal involvement (PFS only), high aaIPI, low Hb, high CRP or beta2-microglobulin levels. OS and PFS were not different in patients with normal or elevated CA125 levels. Multivariate analyses showed significantly inferior OS and PFS in patients with high beta2-microglobulin but no influence of CA125. CONCLUSION: While CA125 serum level correlates significantly with a number of features associated with more aggressive disease, it does not enhance the performance of standard prognostic markers in the management of patients with NHL or HD. Estimation of kinetic parameters is a key step in modelling, as direct measurements are often expensive, time-consuming or even infeasible. The class of dynamic models in polynomial form is particularly relevant in systems biology and biochemical engineering, as those models naturally arise from modelling biochemical reactions using for instance mass action, Michaelis-Menten or Hill kinetics. Often the parameters are not uniquely identifiable for a given model structure and measurement set. Thus the question of which parameters are consistent or inconsistent with the data arises naturally. Here we present a method capable of proving inconsistency of entire parameter regions with the data. Based on the polynomial representation of the system, we formulate a feasibility problem that can be solved efficiently by semi-definite programming. The feasibility problem allows us to check consistency of entire parameter regions by using upper and lower bounds on the parameters. This drastically limits the search space for subsequent parameter estimation methods. In contrast to similar approaches in the literature, the here presented approach does not require a steady state assumption. Measurements at discrete time points are used, but neither regular sampling intervals, nor a time discretisation of the system is required. Measurement uncertainties are dealt with using upper and lower bounds on the measured states. [less ▲]

Hurricane winds affect the flow around electrical conductor in a way that it may reach the critical (Drag crisis) and postcritical states. It is thus important to introduce the cable aerodynamic drag as Reynolds-dependent when calculating the response of the power transmission line under hurricane. To represent the respective wind loading on cable, the turbulent, spatially non-uniform wind model is used. In order to assess the behaviour and cyclic fatigue loads under hurricane conditions of different transmission line conductors, the time response analyses were done. Results of comparative study of the smooth cable AERO-Z and classical multistrand cable, including the percentage of load reduction offered to supporting structure, are presented. [less ▲]

Spectroscopic mode identification techiques, which monitor intensity variations across an absorption line, provide the possibility of determining the quantum numbers l and m, the inclination and the intrinsic pulsation amplitude of a star. Of course, the uncertainties of the mode identification are dependent on the quality of the observations and the identification method applied. We have focused on the Pixel-by-pixel method/Direct line profile fitting (Mantegazza 2000) and the Moment method (Balona 1987, Briquet & Aerts 2003) for pinpointing mode parameters and tested the impact of various observational effects and stellar properties on the identification. This article is part of a volume on limits of competition law. It explores a particular type of limitations, which has not recieved the attention it deserves. These limits stem from finite legal technology and bear on imports from economics into competition law. There is usually more than one way to import any given element of economic wisdom into a court decisions, but there is a finite number of options. Therefore, courts who are willing to take on an economic arguments will have to make choices as to the most suited legal technique among those available. In this article, I offer a typology of available legal techniques and explain their respective characteristics in terms of three characteristics, which matter for importing economics: degree of legal change implied, flexibility and fidelity to economic reasoning. I argue that it is important that courts become aware of the choice-of-technique decisions they are making and that scholars consider this methodological dimension of competition law & economics. LiMn2-xTixO4 compounds with 0.5 =<x =< 1 were prepared by solid state reaction and Pechini technique. Powder X-ray diffraction showed that all samples crystallize with the spinel crystal structure (S.G. Fd3m). The cubic unit-cell parameter increases with the Ti content. The influence of the Ti content and cationic distribution on the magnetic properties of the compounds was studied by measuring the temperature and magnetic field dependences of the magnetization: substitution by non-magnetic d(0) Ti4+ ions appeared to weaken the magnetic interactions between the manganese ions. The electrical properties of LiMnTiO4 were studied by AC impedance spectroscopy and DC polarisation measurements, which revealed the electronic character of the conduction process.
