[more ▼] Respiratory disorders were frequently observed in a calf house despite vaccinations and drug therapy. The building was heated with a hot air system and ventilated with extraction fans. Temperature and relative humidity were recorded over a 2-week period. Temperature was in agreement with usual recommendations but relative humidity was about 100% during the whole observation period. The high relative humidity was not due to an inadequate ventilation rate but the result of large amounts of water used daily in cleaning the building. [more ▼] To understand and predict the behaviour and transfer of diffuse contamination, a small catchment is intensively studied in the vicinity of Paris. A multi tracer test involving a new technique, the FVPDM method (Finite Volume Point Dilution Method - Brouyère et al., 2008) has been performed in natural flow conditions. Injections of four different tracers (uranine, sulforhodamine B, lithium chloride and potassium iodide) took place in four piezometers involving different areas of the aquifer and different depth. This tracer test follows a former test briefly described. A particularly long monitoring (Nov-2005 to Feb-2008) demonstrates the existence of several transport velocities within the sandy layer, which seems linked to the decrease of hydraulic conductivity with depth. Absence of recovery of two tracers confirms the results of the former test and identifies spatial heterogeneities probably due to the geological structure. The new insight and parameter quantification brought by interpretation of these tests contributes to a better characterization of the saturated zone and shall be exploited through modelling for transport predictions of pesticides. [more ▼] Background. The recommended target range for serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) in dialysis patients has changed from 150 to 300 pg/mL in the KDOQI guidelines to two to nine times the upper normal limit in the KDIGO ones. Although inclusion/exclusion criteria for the reference population are highly important, they are usually not mentioned in the commercial kits. In this study, we used the same reference population of vitamin D-replete normal subjects to establish reference values for 10 commercial PTH kits. We evaluated whether this may improve the classification of dialysis patients according to the KDIGO compared to the use of reference values proposed by the manufacturers. Methods. We measured serum PTH with 10 different kits in 149 haemodialysis patients, and 240 25-OH-vitamin D-replete (>75 nmol/L) individuals with an estimated glomerular filtration rate >60 mL/min/1.73 m2. Results. For the 10 kits, our upper normal limit was lower than those of the manufacturers. The difference was, however, variable from one kit to another. The two kits that yielded the lowest and the highest absolute concentrations classified differently 84/149 patients (56.4%) according to the KDOQI and 53/149 (36.2%) according to the KDIGO using the manufacturers’ normal value.Using our normal values significantly decreased the discrepancies with 24/149 patients (16.1%) being still classified differently. Taking the measurement uncertainty into consideration, 8% of the patients only remained differently classified by these two kits. Conclusions. Using the same vitamin-D-replete population to establish the reference range for 10 commercial PTH kits significantly improved the classification of haemodialysis patients according to the KDIGO target range. The ... [more ▼] The hypothesis proposed by Beals for the interpretation of the complex contours of lines of H and Ca II in HD 190073 is discussed in the light of recent observations made at the McDonald Observatory. The absorption lines designated by Beals as A2 and A3 and the emission of Ca II and H probably originate in a shell whose radius is several times larger than the radius of the star. The absence of A1 near the center of the emission in Ca II H suggests that this sharp line is produced at a lower level, where the velocity of expansion is negligible. The central reversals of the H lines, on the other hand, may come from an upper layer of the shell where the atoms have become decelerated. In this case the absorbing layer must lie immediately above an optically thick emitting shell, so that it will act somewhat like a reversing layer and not like a detached shell at great distances from the emitting regions.
