One of the most critical units of nulling interferometers is the Achromatic Phase Shifter. The concept we propose here is based on optimized Fresnel rhombs, using the total internal reflection phenomenon, modulated or not. The total internal reflection induces a phase shift between the polarization components of the incident light. We present the principles, the current status of the prototype manufacturing and testing operations, as well as preliminary experiments on a ZnSe Fresnel rhomb in the visible that have led to a first error source assessment study. Thanks to these first experimental results using a simple polarimeter arrangement, we have identified the bulk scattering as being the main error source. Fortunately, we have experimentally verified that the scattering can be mitigated using spatial filters and does not decrease the phase shifting capabilities of the ZnSe Fresnel rhomb. [less ▲]

Le phénomène des logements vides est en Wallonie un problème urbain de plus en plus sérieux. L’article vise à rendre compte des mécanismes qui concourent à cette multiplication des friches d’habitat. Une première partie est consacrée aux mutations territoriales et immobilières observées en Belgique lors des dernières décennies. En s’appuyant sur l’examen de trois enquêtes, la seconde partie porte ensuite sur les choix d’investissements qui expliquent pourquoi des propriétaires de plus en plus nombreux délaissent leur patrimoine immobilier. La première enquête a été réalisée auprès d’un échantillon représentatif des particuliers actifs sur le marché de la location, la deuxième auprès de propriétaires d’immeubles résidentiels vides et la troisième auprès de propriétaires d’immeubles commerciaux comportant des étages vides. Since the first works on thixoforming, lot of studies have been performed all over the world and the behaviour of the globular semi-solid slurry is now quite well understood. This knowledge had lead to an industrialisation of the technology for low melting point alloys as aluminium or magnesium. For high melting point alloys as steel, this industrialisation is still a wish but seems closer each year. In the aim of this development of the process, it is important to be able to accurately represent the behaviour of the slurry during thixoforming. In this goal, lot of constitutive models has been proposed during the last years. However, until now there isn’t any study about the friction in the case of thixoforming. This knowledge is needed as friction has an important effect on the flow of the slurry during the shaping. The aim of this work is so to propose a quantification of the friction coefficients for the thixoforming technology thanks to experiments on a dedicated tool and comparison with simulations run on the finite elements code Forge2008©. The friction law is a Coulomb limited Tresca one. [less ▲]

The poor wettability of carbon substrates by liquid Mg and, in the case of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), their strong tendency to agglomerate, are major obstacles to the large-scale production of C-Mg composites by classical ‘liquid-state’ processing routes such as squeeze casting. As an innovative ‘solid state’ process, Friction Stir Processing (FSP) hence appeared as a very promising alternative for the production of C-Mg composites, although the method for inserting the reinforcing phase - in grooves or holes machined in the matrix material - remained time-consuming and labour-intensive. More recently, the present authors proposed a new and easier technique for the insertion of C fibres in FSPed Mg-matrix composites i.e. FSP of a C fabric stacked between two metal sheets. In the current work, the feasibility of extending this latter method to the production of CNTs-Mg composites has been assessed. “Bucky papers” – thin disks made from agglomerated CNTs, thus ensuring for their safe handling – were stacked between two sheets of Mg alloy AZ31B, and the resulting sandwich was FSPed. The effect of FSP experimental parameters such as the rotational and advancing speeds or the number of passes on the microstructural changes occuring upon processing has been studied and compared with the case of C fibres-Mg composites. Moreover, a particular attention has been given to the distribution of the reinforcements in the Mg matrix and to the characterization of the resulting mechanical properties. [less ▲]

Processing of magnesium matrix composites reinforced with C fibres by ‘liquid state’ methods such as squeeze casting are usually impaired by the poor wettability of C substrates by liquid Mg. As a consequence, ‘solid state’ processes such as Friction Stir Processing (FSP) appear as very promising alternative processing routes for the production of C-Mg composites. And, more particularly, FSP of a C fabric between two sheets of the fairly ductile Mg alloy AZ31B was shown to be a simple and innovative process for a large-scale production of magnesium matrix composites reinforced with short C fibres. In the present work, FSP of a C fabric between two metal sheets or thin plates has been performed using two different Mg alloys exhibiting quite different mechanical behaviours, i.e. alloy AZ31B and the more brittle alloy AZ91D. And the effect of the matrix characteristics, along with the influence of the FSP experimental parameters such as the rotational and advancing speeds, on the microstructural changes occuring upon processing have been carefully studied. A particular attention has been given to the fragmentation and distribution of the C fibres, as well as to the recrystallisation, solutionising and precipitation processes taking place in the Mg matrix. Until now, the choice of a heating system is, in most cases, rather intuitive, but not based on significant comparisons among the many options available on the market. Friendly calculation tools are badly needed. A prototype of simulation model is shortly presented in this paper. It is designed as a preliminary design tool, allowing the different partners of a project to evaluate the energy impact of the very first design options: building envelope heat transfer coefficients, glazing areas, orientations, solar factors, ventilation mode, heat emission, distribution, generation and control strategy. The heating demand is calculated hour by hour with consideration to the time variations of inside and outside temperatures and free gains, to the control law and to the heating power actually available. The emitter is a water-ambient heat exchanger. It may have some thermal mass. Two emitters are here proposed: the radiator and the flow heating system. A steady state water distribution model is included in this simulation; it takes heat losses in unheated spaces into account: Three typical heating sources are proposed: classical boiler, condensing boiler and heat pump. All heat generators are here simulated with the help of very simple polynomial (“daughter”) models. The polynomial expressions are fitted on the simulation results obtained with reference (“mother”) models, themselves fitted on experimental data available. Examples of simulation results are presented in the paper. [less ▲]
