In recent years, impressive progress has been made in digital imaging and in particular in three dimensional visualisation and analysis of objects. This paper reviews the most recent literature on three dimensional imaging with a special attention to particulate systems analysis. After an introduction recalling some important concepts in spatial sampling and digital imaging, the paper reviews a series of techniques with a clear distinction between the surfometric and volumetric principles. The literature review is as broad as possible covering materials science as well as biology while keeping an eye on emerging technologies in optics and physics. The paper should be of interest to any scientist trying to picture particles in 3D with the best possible resolution for accurate size and shape estimation. Though techniques are adequate for nanoscopic and microscopic particles, no special size limit has been considered while compiling the review. [less ▲]

In this paper, we propose a technique based on 3D information (also called depth or range) for the detection of humans. First, a background subtraction technique operates to detect the silhouettes of humans and objects moving in the scene. Then, a machine learning algorithm is used to predict if a silhouette annotated with depth matches a human silhouette or not. The complete method is designed to cope with defects introduced during the segmentation step. Results, obtained on computer generated data, show that 3D depth data is a valuable information for detecting humans in that it improves over techniques based on binary silhouettes. In our experiments, we have reached an accuracy of 99.9% thanks to the depth information. [less ▲]

This papers presents a modeling of thin resistive sheets. An interface condition is used to avoid the fine mesh. The electromagnetic fields are computed with a time domain Discontinuous Galerkin method in order to evaluate the shielding effectiveness. A 3D cavity is treated to illustrate the efficiency of the condition. [less ▲]

Massive stars possess powerful stellar winds. Wind-wind collision in a massive star binary system generates a region of thermalized plasma which may emit prolifically at X-ray wavelengths. Results are presented from 3D adaptive-mesh refinement (AMR) hydrodynamical models which include radiative cooling and the radiative driving of the stellar winds. The models provide an exceptional insight into the turbulent nature of the wind-wind interaction regions. The X-ray emission from the hydrodynamical models is then calculated, allowing detailed comparisons with observational data. Preliminary results from investigations of Eta Carinae, WR 22, and WR 140 are discussed. [less ▲]
