This paper describes the implementation of failure criteria in an implicit finite element code. Tests are made with the Tsai-Wu criterion, which is widely used in the simulation of composite failure. The method is applied to the simulation of a tensile test of a laminate composite. The elasto-plastic material model of the composite ply, a polymer reinforced with woven carbon fabric, is described. Convergence of the results with respect to the mesh size and number of time steps is analysed and the reliability of the method is discussed. [less ▲]

This paper presents a finite volume solver for the computation of three-dimensional unsteady flows of inviscid compressible perfect gases on moving unstructured meshes. This solver, based on a cell-centered approach for arbitrary polyhedral cells, provides unconditional second-order space and time truncation error. Implicit learning abilities of nine amnesic patients were explored by using an artificial grammar learning task in which the test strings were constructed in such a way that grammaticality judgments could not be based on a simple knowledge of bigrams and trigrams (chunks). Results show that amnesic patients and controls performed at the same level during the classification task, whereas amnesic patients performed worse than controls in an explicit generation task. Moreover, there was no correlation between the implicit and explicit measures. These results are compatible with the existence of two kinds of representation intervening in artificial grammar learning. The first one based on processes leading to fragment-specific knowledge (the chunks, which can be accessed explicitly), and the second based on the learning of simple associations and more complex conditional relations between elements. Studies of manual and digital sequence learning indicate that motor memories continue to be processed after training has ended, following a succession of identifiable steps. However, it is not known whether this offline memory processing constitutes a basic feature of motor learning and generalizes to the implicit learning of a sequence of eye movements. To assess this hypothesis, we have created the serial oculomotor reaction time task (SORT). Participants were trained to the SORT then tested after either 30 min, 5 h or 24 h. During training, ocular reaction times decreased monotonically over practice of a repeated sequence, then increased when a different sequence was displayed, demonstrating oculomotor learning of the trained sequence. When tested 30 min after training, a significant gain in oculomotor performance was observed irrespective of the sequence learning. This gain was no longer present after 5 h. Remarkably, a gain in performance specific to the learned sequence emerged only 24 h after training. After testing, a generation task confirmed that most subjects learned implicitly the regularities of the sequence. Our results show that, as for manual or digital sequences, oculomotor sequences can be implicitly learned. The offline processing of oculomotor memories follows distinct stages in a way similar to those observed after manual or digital sequence learning. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. This paper addresses the symbolic representation of non-convex real polyhedra, i.e., sets of real vectors satisfying arbitrary Boolean combinations of linear constraints. We develop an original data structure for representing such sets, based on an implicit and concise encoding of a known structure, the Real Vector Automaton. The resulting formalism provides a canonical representation of polyhedra, is closed under Boolean operators, and admits an efficient decision procedure for testing the membership of a vector. The main purpose of the present study was to examine whether implicit learning abilities, assessed by means of a serial reaction time task, are present to the same extent in 6- and 10-year-old children as in adults. We also wondered whether the knowledge acquired after one learning session is retained after a one-week delay. And finally, we studied the explicit knowledge developed by the children in this task. Our results show no age-related difference in the serial reaction time performance, which is consistent with the idea that implicit learning abilities may be efficient early in development. [less ▲]

In order to solve fast dynamic problems, an explicit method is the most adapted. But for slower dynamics, an implicit method is more stable. Typical industrial problems are governed by high frequency, e.g. impact, during short time intervals and slower dynamics, e.g. spring-back, during other time intervals. The optimal solution is then to have both implicit algorithm and explicit methods readily available in the same code and to be able to switch automatically from one to the other. Criteria that decide when to shift from a method to another have been developed here. Implicit balanced restarting conditions that annihilate numerical oscillations resulting for an explicit calculation are also proposed. [less ▲]

Dual-process theories of recognition posit that perceptual fluency contributes to both familiarity-based explicit recognition and perceptual priming. However, the priming-without-recognition dissociation, as observed through the intact mere exposure effect and impaired recognition in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD), might indicate that familiarity and perceptual priming are functionally distinct. This study investigated whether the AD patients' processing strategies at testing may explain this priming-without-recognition dissociation. First, we replicated the priming-without-recognition effect in 16 patients who exhibited intact exposure effects despite null recognition. Second, we showed that, under identical conditions, inducing a holistic processing strategy during recognition testing increased AD patients' recognition--performance was similar for AD patients and healthy control participants. Furthermore, prompting analytic processing during both priming and recognition tasks decreased AD patients' performance in both tasks. These findings suggest that the extent to which AD patients use perceptual fluency in priming and recognition tasks is contingent on their processing approach. The choice of processing strategy may depend on how difficult patients perceive the task to be. [less ▲]
