Illusory recollection is the subjective detailed feeling of remembering that sometimes accompanies false remembering of events that never happened (e.g., high confidence, “Remember” judgements, or even remembrance of precise details supposedly associated with the false event). In this review, typical illusory recollection measures obtained from laboratory studies will be depicted, with a focus on the DRM paradigm (Deese, 1959; Roediger & McDermott, 1995), one of the most largely used procedures to study memory distortion and its associated illusory recollection. The theoretical explanations of illusory recollection will be described and contrasted in light of factors affecting the phenomenon, in order to shown their strengths and limits. Although the focus on the origins of illusory recollection is relatively recent, overall, this review suggests that DRM false memories can be an excellent tool to study this phenomenon under controlled conditions and to gain insights on false memories occurring in everyday life. A scanning light microscope (SLM) is used to illustrate recent benthic foraminiferal species from surface sediment samples collected in Bermuda subtropical environments. Species illustrated here are the main foraminiferal species found in Bermuda lagoons, reefs, caves, mangroves, and ponds, but also occur in most subtropical and tropical areas. The SLM permits photography of specimens without coating and gives pictures most similar to specimens that micropaleontologists see under a dissecting reflected light microscope in a petri dish with water, in contrast to images made with scanning electron microscopes. These pictures are the first SLM illustrations of subtropical/tropical species of benthic foraminifera and will be very useful for their identification. Bermuda recent sediment hosts a benthic foraminifera fauna as diverse as in other subtropical and tropical areas, and the general trends of foraminiferal distribution and morphology are similar. Remarks on foraminiferal distribution in Bermuda and other subtropical/tropical areas are also presented. [less ▲]

The Rogaland Anorthosite Province comprises three major massif-type anorthosites, two smaller-sized anorthositic-leuconoritic bodies, as well as a large layered, dominantly noritic intrusion. A mangero-noritic intrusion is found in the northeastern part of the province and major acidic intrusions are located to the far southeast. The Rogaland Anorthosite Province was emplaced into the Sveconorwegian orogenic belt of southwest Scandinavia at 931±3 Ma. Emplacement took place at around 5.5 kbar producing a thermal aureole with osumilite and pigeonite isograds and evidence for dehydration melting. The early history of the hosting terrane most likely dates back to Gothian or late Pre-Gothian times and contain evidence for numerous episodes of folding and deformation. Contact metamorphism was superimposed on a crustal volume, which had been exposed to Sveconorwegian granulite facies metamorphism between 1024 and 970 Ma. Deformation patterns, mineral compositional considerations and geothermobarometry imply that the Rogaland anorthosites crystallized along a P-T trajectory starting at 10-13 kbar, and were emplaced in a mushy state. The possibility that primitive jotunites may be parental to the andesine anorthosites have recently been substantiated, and experimental data show that these jotunites most likely formed by melting of gabbronoritic sources in the lower crust. The 230 km2 Bjerkreim-Sokndal Layered Intrusion also derive from jotunitic parents, and jotunites form a continuous liquid line of descent filling the gap between basic and acidic rocks in Rogaland. This intrusion contains a >7000 m thick layered cumulate sequence, consisting of virtually all the rock types belonging to the anorthosite kindred. The intrusion morphology, layering and compositional variation result from a variety of magma chamber processes, which are discussed in detail. The Rogaland Anorthosite Province also hosts numerous Fe-Ti oxide deposits of variable size, grade and composition. The oxide deposits have been divided into three basic types based on their oxide-phosphate association; type 1: ilmenite-only, type 2: ilmenite + magnetite and type 3: ilmenite + magnetite + apatite. This excursion guide provides detailed itineraries to most parts of the Rogaland Anorthosite Province, with in-depth descriptions of more than 40 key localities, The itineraries cover the various anorthosites, the Bjerkreim-Sokndal Layered Intrusion, jotunitic and acidic intrusions, the hosting metamorphic complex, as well as Fe-Ti oxide and sulfide deposits. In the framework of the International Liquid Mirror Telescope (ILMT) project, a new method for testing the optical quality of liquid mirrors has been developed. The optical quality of liquid mirrors may be affected by the presence of wavelets in the liquid layer. This talk explains how it is possible to detect these defects by measuring the deflection they induce to a laser beam reflected on the liquid surface. Moreover, this method allows to characterize the different parameters of the wavelets, making possible to simulate their impact on the point spread function of the ILMT. Focus will be done on the experimental setup of the method. [less ▲]
