Une comparaison entre des applications de deltaméthrine et une solution d'extrait d'amande de Neem a été effectuée dans la zone péri urbaine de Cotonou, sur des populations de Plutella xylostella (L.). Sur les parcelles traitées à la deltaméthrine, on observe des populations du oraageur dix fois supérieures à celles présentes sur les parcelles traitées au Neem. Le nombre de choux commercialisables issus des parcelles traitées au Neem est 1.5 fois supérieur à celui produit par celles traitées avec le pyréthrinoïde. L'influence de ces applications a également été observée sur les populations de Cotesia plutellae (Kurdjumov), unique parasitoïde de la Teigne. Il semble que ces populations ne soient ni génées par les applications d'extrait de Neem, ni par celles de deltaméthrine. [less ▲]

This infusion reduced MBP (-7 mm Hg, p less than 0.05) after 13 days of protein-supplemented fasting. This difference in the cardio-vascular reactivity to circulatory epinephrine could contribute to the decrease in the arterial blood pressure observed during protein-supplemented fasting. [less ▲]

Diabetes mellitus and arterial pulse pressure (PP) are two independent cardiovascular risk factors. This cross-sectional study investigated the influence of diabetes duration on PP in type 1 diabetic patients without any cardiovascular disease. PP was measured continuously during 3 minutes (active orthostatic test: 1 min standing--1 min squatting--1 min standing) using a fingertip plethysmograph (Finapres) in 159 type 1 diabetic patients aged 20-60 yrs. They were divided into 4 groups according to diabetes duration: (1) G1 : <10 yrs (n=39); G2: 11-20 yrs (n=45); G3: 21-30 yrs (n=57); and G4: >30 yrs (n=18). In order to separate the effects of age from the effects of diabetes duration, diabetic patients were compared to age- and sex-matched non diabetic controls. PP (expressed in mmHg; mean +/- SD) was higher in men than in women in both diabetic (58 +/- 15 vs. 50 +/- 14; p = 0.001) and non diabetic subjects (55 +/- 14 vs. 47 +/- 12; p = 0.001). Overall PP was higher in diabetic than in non diabetic individuals (54 +/- 15 vs. 50 +/- 13; p = 0.025). PP progressively increased according to diabetes duration: 47 +/- 16 vs. 51 +/- 13 vs. 59 +/- 14 vs. 62 +/- 12, from G1 to G4 respectively; p < 0.0001. Such an increase was not observed in age-matched non diabetic subjects: 50 +/- 11 vs. 52 +/- 12 vs. 49 +/- 14 vs. 52 +/- 18, from G1 to G4, respectively; NS. PP was higher in squatting than in standing position in non diabetic subjects (52 +/- 16 vs. 47 +/- 13; p < 0.0001) and even more in diabetic patients (59 +/- 17 vs. 50 +/- 14; p < 0.0001). Overall, PP difference between diabetic and non diabetic individuals was not significant in standing position (50 +/- 14 vs. 47 +/- 13; NS) although it became highly significant in squatting position (59 +/- 17 vs. 52 +/- 16; p = 0.0005). The squatting-standing difference in PP markedly increased with diabetes duration: 69 +/- 14 during squatting vs. 50 +/- 18 during standing in G4 compared to respectively 50 +/- 17 vs. 44 +/- 15 in G1 diabetic patients. Finally, PP was similar (NS) in diabetic patients with HbA1c < 8% (54 +/- 14) or > or =8% (55 +/- 16), with (57 +/- 17) or without (54 +/- 14) microalbuminuria, treated (56 +/- 14) or not (54 +/- 15) by inhibitors of the renin-angiotensin system. In conclusion, PP progressively increased with the duration of type 1 diabetes, independently of age. Such increase was more marked in squatting than in standing position. The role of such PP rise in the increased cardiovascular risk of patients with type 1 diabetes, although suspected in the recent EURODIAB Prospective Complications Study, deserves further investigation. The knowledge of changes occurring in the soil cover at the forest edge is needed to better understand the impact of forest fragmentation on soil parameters. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of forest fragmentation caused by shifting agriculture on texture, bulk density, total porosity and soil hydraulic conductivity in the layers at 0-10, 10-20 and 20-30 cm depth by the transect method in a perspective of sustainable land management in the region of Yangambi. The results obtained show that the edge between the fallow grassland and dense forest has a width of 70 m. Degradation of all the physical properties of soils relative to the dense forest is very significant (p<0.01) for the studied layers. Fragmentation of forests by shifting cultivation increases the phenomenon of selective loss of clays of the surface soil layers and consequently increases its bulk density and decreases the permeability and porosity with depth under the fallow grass and edge. The texture data associated with textural classes in the FAO textural triangle indicate a change in texture of the soil under different land uses for the tree layers studied. [less ▲]

Le boom du marché de l’huile d’argan a engendré de multiples conséquences sur la vie socioéconomique et culturelle des populations locales. En fait, la marchandisation de l’argan a eu à la fois des retombées positives et des effets négatifs sur tout l’écosystème. Pour comprendre et analyser ces évolutions et les nouvelles dynamiques locales qui y prennent place, nous avons réalisé une étude empirique dans la région d’Essaouira. Nos principaux résultats montrent que l’engouement pour les produits de l’arganier et la flambée de leurs prix (notamment l’huile) ont re-configuré la vie socio-économique et culturelle locale : de nouveaux acteurs ont surgi, un marché insuffisamment structuré et pas assez profitable aux locaux s’est mis en place, le savoir-faire local s’érode, de nouveaux modes d’alimentation ont fait leur apparition, des coutumes et traditions sont en voie de disparition, etc. [less ▲]

The modernization of the tannery of Maradi had intervened in 2009 with the introduction of the process of tanning in the chromium. We estimated the influence of this change of operating process through an evaluation of the impact characteristics evolution of the solid and liquid discharges of this tannery on water. It stands out that the modernization of the tannery activities had more or less significant effects on these environment elements. We noted a relative improvement of the quality of underground waters illustrated by the regression of the content in chloride and nitrates rates stabilization. While the content in chromium evolved in a significant way as well as the pH. However, all the four above parameters remain below WHO standards. By cons, this modernization has almost not influenced the impact on the quality of surface waters. The values of BOD and COD have continued to rise despite the installation of a treatment system. Thus this surface water, including the pond, proved to be a major public health risk for domestic and agricultural use and is also a source of air pollution. [less ▲]

We describe the molecular mechanisms of action of nicotine and delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol, the most potent component of cannabis. Like other drugs of abuse, these compounds enhance dopamine release in a precise area of the limbic system when administered acutely. It has recently been shown that the cannabinoid receptors on which delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol acts are also activated by endogenous ligands such as anandamide. This unconventional neurotransmitter appears to have important physiological effects in the central nervous system. Both preclinical and clinical evidence suggests that nicotine is more addictive than delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol. However, the intimate interactions that exist between cannabinoid and opioid systems within the brain suggest that cannabinoids should not be considered as harmless drugs of abuse. [less ▲]

Hydrogen is widely considered as the most promising energetic carrier. At an industrial scale, steam reforming of methane is currently the major hydrogen producing process. But it may also be produced from renewable biomass. Indeed, the fermentative production of hydrogen from renewable biomass using anaerobic bacteria could at least partially reduce our dependence on fossil fuel, decrease the carbon dioxide emissions and produce “green” energy. It offers the potential production of usable hydrogen from a variety of renewable resources such as carbohydrates wastes from agriculture or agro-food industries. This technology is based on anaerobic fermentation, called dark fermentation, by chemotrophic bacteria. The investigations carried out at CWBI involve selection and characterization of bacteria strains able to produce biohydrogen efficiently and with a wide range of substrate. The selected strains at the laboratory has been characterised as Clostridium sp. In order to produce hydrogen at high yields and production rates, the biotechnological process needs to be further optimized and efficient bioreactors must be designed. At CWBI, a new reactor called “horizontal rotating cylinder bioreactor” allows the production of biohydrogen from glucose with our Clostridium sp. strain with a high yield and production rate. This reactor, working continuously, has an internal volume of 2.3l but a working volume (liquid phase) of 300ml. Firstly, it enhances the hydrogen production rate by partially fixing the bacteria on the porous cylinder and thus increasing the cell concentration in the bioreactor. Secondly, the rotative cylinder enables efficient gas transfer (mainly hydrogen) from the liquid phase where it is produced by the bacteria. This is an important way to enhance hydrogen production yield by allowing the bacteria metabolism to shift in a fermentation type that produces more hydrogen. This was confirmed by increasing or decreasing the total pressure in the bioreactor and observing the influence of hydrogen production. The liquid to gas hydrogen transfer is possibly an important factor to enhance the biogas production. Our investigation confirmed this by testing different liquid to gas transfer condition in BHP test (batch fermentation in 250ml serum bottles).This was made either by decreasing total and partial pressure or by increasing the mixing state of the media. Our work concludes the importance of providing good liquid to gas transfers in the biohydrogen producing reactors to enhance the hydrogen production and reach higher yields and production rates.
