Scintigraphy of the respiratory system, a technique used extensively in human medecine, provides a direct and non-invasive measure of both total and regional ventilation and perfusion of each lung. This article remind you some nuclear notions and describes scintigraphical techniques for horses. The resuits of studies suggest that ventilation! perfusion scintigraphy provides valuable additionnai informations on regional lung function that are not obtainable from conventional investigations. The mucociliary clearance rates from the trachea can be determinated using scintigraphy and the differenttherapeutic drugs, which are claimed to increase mucokinesis, are successively presented. Methods of radiation protection in equine nuclear medecine are described [less ▲]

During the last years, GFR estimation has received substantial attention with a focus on comparing results of new formulas with GFR measurements, and standardization of creatinine assays. Calibration of creatinine should improve performances. However, frequently used equations have lower precision in high GFR populations. This is the reason why a continuous effort in improving predicting equations is still needed. The use of calibrated creatinine, the onset of new GFR markers such as cystatin C, and pooling data across many study populations are underway to develop better prediction. [less ▲]

Introduction: For several years, respiratory muscles strength can be assessed by various non-invasive or invasive methods. This evaluation is becoming essential in the context of several respiratory diseases. Methods: In a randomized study, 40 healthy subjects purchased respiratory tests (Sniff Nasal Inspiratory Pressure (SNIP), peak inspiratory pressure (PImax) and maximal expiratory pressure (PEmax)) includes a measure of their forced vital capacity and strength of respiratory muscles. Influence of various anthropometric parameters on respiratory muscles strength was assessed through the Macro 5000®, with voluntary and non-invasive tests (SNIP, PImax and PEmax). Results: Gender, height and weight have a significant influence on respiratory muscle strength. Conclusions: Macro 5000® allows the measurement of standardized and reproducible data on respiratory muscles strength (SNIP, PImax and PEmax), in a protocol of about thirty minutes. It also checks the influence of different factors when measuring respiratory muscles strength. [less ▲]

In order to determine if a vocal performance is “in tune” or “out of tune”, to better understand the causes of poor-pitch singing or to evaluate the quality of a singer, tools are necessary. Two methods are actually used to evaluate the vocal accuracy of a sung performance. The "subjective" method makes use of judges whereas the "objective" method uses computer tools. While the first method allows a rapid assessment, it lacks precision. The “objective” method seems currently preferred but shows limits that our research aims to overcome. The first step was to develop a functional and objective method, which takes into account the different melodic errors we encounter when using the Western tonal system (i.e. respect of the melodic contours, the pitch intervals, and the tonal center). We then applied this method to sung performances of occasional and professional singers. These first studies confirmed the functionality and legitimacy of our method. However, some limits occurred regarding the evaluation of Western operatic singers. In a second step, we observed the relevance of this method and more specifically the interest to evaluate complete melodies (compared to pitch matching tasks) and the interest to differentiate the possible melodic errors. Finally, the comparison of our method with the evaluation made by music experts has enabled us to examine their perception and definition of vocal accuracy. Through seven studies, we explored the theoretical and methodological aspects of vocal accuracy in a melodic context. Taken together, the results of these studies allow us to clarify the definition of vocal accuracy and to consider the several clinical and experimental perspectives of our objective method for evaluating singing voice accuracy. In both scientific and political discussions, recent decades have seen a gradual developement of a consensus for the need to implicate participants in environmental and spatial planning, decision-making and project implementation. Considering the landscape, public participation is notably mentioned in the recent European Landscape Convention (Florence, October 2000). In the early 1990’s the Ministry for the Walloon Region has entrusted to ADESA (Association Action et Défense de l’Environnement de la Vallée de la Senne et de ses Affluents) to identify the remarkable landscape and the interesting viewpoints in the perspective of a total revision of the land affectation plans. The method elaborated integrates the public participation. Our objective is to assess the procedure led by ADESA. Which stakeholders were associated ? According to which methods ? What are the pros and cons of the method ? Which types of landscapes were identified and why ? [less ▲]
