Near a small city of the Belgian ‘Ardennes’ (East of Belgium), modification of a natural slope for extension of industrial activities has required an extensive drainage in a weathered zone composed of colluvium and weathered claystones and quartzites. After a few days, the drain at the foot of the artificial slope was producing about 1000 m3/day while a natural spring located at a 200 m distance on the hillside was completely dried up. This spring was used for drinking water by the local community. A shallow geophysical prospection by refraction seismics and 2D geoelectrical tomography, associated to geological, morphostructural and hydrogeological observations have lead to a clear understanding of (1) the spring occurrence; (2) the feeding conditions of the spring and consequently (3) the ‘lateral’ hydraulic impact of the drain. In the hill, the bedrock is changing from quartzites (uphill) to claystones (downhill) inducing changes in hydraulic conductivity and thickness of the overlying weathered zone. On the basis of these hydrogeological conditions, associated to the specific topographic conditions, different possible remediation schemas have been proposed to the decision makers. Unfortunately, the full restoration of the natural spring appears to be one of the most technically and financially difficult option …while it is surely the most suitable in the name of a sustainable development. This article proposes an open-source testbed to simulate interaction models governing the exchange of flexibility services located within a distribution network. The testbed is an agent-based system in which the distribution system operator, the transmission system operator, producers and retailers make their decisions based on mixed-integer linear programs. This testbed helps to highlight the characteristics of an interaction model, the benefits for the agents and eases the detection of unwanted or abusive behaviors which decreases the welfare. The testbed is implemented in Python and the optimization problems are encoded in the modeling language ZIMPL. A web interface is coupled with an instance generator using macroscopic parameters of the system such as the total power production. This testbed is, therefore, well suited to test the implemented interaction models on various scenarios and to extend the implementation to other models. Five interaction models developed with industrial partners are simulated over a year on a 75-bus test system. Simulations show that interaction models relying on active network management, as they have been developed, lead to substantial welfare even though they suffer from a lack of coordination between the DSO and the TSO. A conservative interaction model restricting grid users to an access range that is computed ahead of time to prevent any congestion, avoids shedding distributed generation but considerably restrains the amount of distributed production. A new generation of widely distributed systems to measure the Internet topology at the interface level is currently being deployed. Cooperation between monitors in these systems is required in order to avoid over-consumption of network resources. This paper proposes an architecture for a distributed topology measurement (DTM) system that, for the first time, decentralizes probing information. The key idea of our proposal is that, by utilizing a shared database as a communication method among monitors and taking advantage of the characteristics of the Doubletree algorithm, we can get rid of a specific control point, and a DTM system can be constructed in a decentralized manner. In this paper, we describe our implementation of a DTM, called Decentralized Tracing System (DTS). Decentralization within DTS is achieved using various distributed hash tables (DHTs), each one being dedicated to a particular plane (i.e., control or data). We also provide preliminary evaluation results. [less ▲]
