A new family of "hypervariable minisatellites" has been identified in the genome of man and of a variety of animal species using as a probe a DNA segment isolated from the M 13 bacteriophage. This finding provides a new series of hyperpolymorphic genetic markers and renders the "DNA-fingerprinting" methodology available to every molecular biology laboratory. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

Family relationships are central to the way Caribbean writers define their identities. This is particularly the case of Caryl Phillips. Most of his fiction presents the family as a site of disruption, but also includes examples of surrogate parenthood, which reflect the complexity of the writer's identity conundrum. The discussion focuses on Phillips's 2003 novel A Distant Shore. [less ▲]

We propose a family of nonlinear state feedback global stabilizers for all planar linear systems which are globally stabilizable by bounded inputs (namely, all non exponentially unstable linear systems). This family is parametrized by a nonlinear function whose selection can yield quasi time-optimal responses, where the "quasi" is required to achieve local exponential stability of the closed loop. The arising trajectories are quasi-time-optimal for arbitrarily large initial conditions; so, we expect the very simple proposed nonlinear control law to be very useful for embedded control applications with strong computational constraints. This paper deals with the approximation concepts approach applied to structural optimization. In 1987, Svanberg proposed the method of moving asymptotes for solving structural optimization problems. This approximation is monotonous and can efficiently treat problems characterized by such a behavior. Svanberg (1995) proposed a modification of the MMA approximation by making it non monotonous. This property is based on an heuristically updated parameter. The resulting approximation is called GCMMA. In Bruyneel et al. (1999), it is shown that it is possible to generate non monotonous GCMMA based approximations, called GBMMA, by using the gradient and/or the function values from previous iteration. It was shown that such approximations improve the convergence speed of the optimization process. In many optimization problems (for example composite structures optimization or simultaneous sizing and optimal configuration of truss structures), the structural responses present both monotonous and non monotonous behaviors. A mixed monotonous/non monotonous approximation scheme has to be used for approximating in the best way the optimization problem (Zhang et al., 1998 and Bruyneel and Fleury, 2000). In this paper, we propose to show that it is possible to derive a very general approximation of the MMA family based on gradients and/or functions values at two successive design step, that present a mixed monotonous/non monotonous behavior. This approximation scheme is based on the GMMA approximation of Dusyinx et al. (1995) and on the non monotonous GBMMA approximations of Bruyneel and Fleury (1999). As the approximation scheme proposed in this paper is general, it contains all the approximations of the MMA family described above, that is MMA, GCMMA, GBMMA and GMMA. According to the characteristics of the problem under consideration, one of those approximations or of a mix of them is used to solve the optimization problem. This selection can be automatic or based on the designer’s knowledge. Numerical applications will show that the derived GMMA/GBMMA approximation scheme is efficient for solving structural optimization problems. Results will be compared with the ones obtained with the other approximations of the MMA family. [less ▲]

This paper proposes a new first-order approximation scheme used for solving structural optimization problems. It is based on approximations of the MMA family (MMA and GCMMA), but it utilizes the gradients and/or the function values at two successive design points to improve the quality of the approximation. In addition, this scheme can consider simultaneously monotonous and nonmonotonous structural behaviour. According to the characteristics of the treated problem, one of the approximations or a mix of them is automatically selected. Based on this approach, the accuracy of the approximated subproblems is improved and the solution process can be sped up. Numerical results compare the effectiveness of the method with previously derived approximations of the MMA family for shape optimization of trusses and for composite design problems. The benefit of using mixed approximations is also discussed. [less ▲]

This paper studies the role of family size in the design of optimal income taxation. We consider a second best setting where the government observes the number of children and the income of the parents but not their productivity. With a linear tax schedule the marginal tax rate is shown to decrease with the number of children, while the relationship between the demogrant and family size appears to be ambiguous. With two ability levels, optimal non-linear income tax implies zero marginal tax rates for the higher ability parents; low ability parents have positive marginal tax rates that decrease with family size. Although brain injury may have a great impact on the family as a whole, family reactions are not adequately addressed in rehabilitative programmes. When they are, treatment tends to be approached from a family education and support perspective and not from a family therapy perspective. The aim of the following paper is to illustrate the important role that a family systems approach can play in treating families of individuals with brain injury. In particular, clinical examples taken from the literature will be presented that illustrate how family roles can be modified as a consequence of a brain injury, and the importance of re-establishing or re-distributing these roles. It will be argued that an intimate collaboration between family therapist and brain injury professional is essential, and that the ideal professional make-up of clinicians working with families of persons with brain injury are those well-versed in both brain injury rehabilitation and family therapy.
