Four accepted HERSCHEL open time key programs, DIGIT, GASPS, DEBRIS and DUNES, will study the evolution of the dust grains in circumstellar disks around young and Main Sequence stars. There is a strong implication of the french community in these four projects which represent a total of 930 hours (>38 days) of her\ observing time. The DIGIT and GASPS projects will focus on the first stages of planet formation, while the DEBRIS and DUNES projects will search for extra-solar Kuiper Belt analogs around nearby Main Sequence stars. In this paper, we give an overview of the scientific goals of the four projects and of the numerical tools that we will be providing to the teams to model and interpret the her\ observations from these programs. Teaching cooperation-related issues to AEC (Architecture, Engineering and Construction) students is a major stake nowadays. There are many reasons for that: construction projects become more and more complex and cooperation practices are evolving in both organizational and IT-based ways. It is notably for these reasons that the issue of IT is addressed in most of the AEC-oriented schools and universities. Traditionally IT is taught to support the tasks of each specific construction field (e.g. CAD for architects, simulation tools for static engineers etc.). The Digital Cooperative Studio, presented in this article, considers IT as a support to cooperation and especially its communication and coordination dimensions. Moreover, we describe here a living lab involving students, teachers and researchers. This strong link between research and teaching allows both the students to be “analysts” of their real project situations and the researchers to experiment their development in real project situations. Digital holographic (DH) interferometry has been developed in the long-wave infrared spectral range with CO2 lasers and microbolometer arrays. This application has been driven by the European Space Agency’s constant need of techniques for monitoring large displacements of large structures. Here the study focuses on the case of aspheric mirrors, like parabola and ellipses. Usually they are tested through interferometric wavefront error measurements which require expensive null-lenses matching each of the reflectors considered. In the case of monitoring deformation a holographic technique can be considered where the wavefront is compared with itself at different instant. Therefore the optical can be quite simple and easily reconfigurable from one reflector to another. The advantage of using long wavelength is that large deformations can be measured at once, in addition to being more immune against environmental perturbations. Another advantage of DH at such wavelengths is that the ratio between the wavelength and the pixel size allows reconstructing objects 5 to 10 times larger than with DH in the visible. In this project we considered first the case of a 1.1 meter diameter parabola for submillimeter range observations. Such specimen shows strong specular reflectivity. We have developed several set-ups with different ways to illuminate the object and to collect rays to form the object beam: either through point source or through and extended diffuser working by reflection of the laser beam. Both possibilities have been compared in terms of fringe quality as well as measurement range. We selected the diffuser illumination for applying the set-up into a large vacuum facility for measuring the deformation of the parabola between 224 and 107 K. Results of this measurement campaign are presented. A further application has been shown by observation of off-axis ellipse. In this case interferometric testing is difficult to achieve and LWIR DHI with diffuser illumination is found quite simple to implement and gives straightforward results. [less ▲]

Digital holographic interferometry in the long wave infrared domain has been developed by combining a CO2 laser and a microbolometer array. The long wavelength allows large deformation measurements which are of interest in the case of large space reflectors undergoing thermal changes when in orbit. We review holography at such wavelengths and present some specific aspects related to this spectral range on our measurements. For the design of our digital holographic interferometer we studied the possibility of illuminating specular objects by a reflective diffuser. We discuss the development of the interferometer and the results obtained on a representative space reflector, first in the laboratory and then during vacuum cryogenic test. [less ▲]

In this letter, we discuss the behavior of droplets on fiber networks. An on/off transition is observed when a droplet comes around an intersection between several fibers: large droplets cross the junction while small droplets remain pinned. We show that fibers perform advantageously most operations of digital microfluidics, such as multiplexed biochemical microreactions: intersections are the basic component of fiber-based microfluidic devices. Based on the Belgian soil map at 1/20,000, this digital map of Wallonia (DSMW) is composed of a cartographic database describing the soil characteristics of the region. Tool for a better soil management, this database will be integrated in a geographical information system where the soil layer could be used in relation with information concerning other aspects of land development. The different operations include : map drawing finalization of non edited sheets, creation of an image layer, vectorial capture of source objects, building up of the topology, characterization of the objects, geometrical corrections, creation of a continuous layer (edge-matching), creation of a homogeneous legend, integration in a geodatabase. The DSMW in figures corresponds to : 16,000 km2; 600,000 soil polygons delimited by 15 million intermediate points (vertex); 6,000 pedological symbols; 700MB. The advantages of this computerized cartographic database are continuity, legibility, accessibility and many possibilities of thematic analyses. [less ▲]

Tilted thick sections (one-half to several micrometers) of biological specimens observed with medium- to high-voltage electron microscopes are extremely useful for the study of the three-dimensional (3-D) structure of organelles. If high resolution in 3-D visualization and 3-D reconstruction is needed, many images corresponding to various angles of rotation and tilt must be recorded. This necessitates very time-consuming work--including eventual photographic processing--before good positioning of the object is defined. We have developed software which permits very rapid and precise determination of the tilt-axis, the registration of tilted views, 3-D measurements and 3-D visualization. Images are digitized either from negative films or directly with a camera fitted to the microscope. The application of the software is performed in minutes and allows for a rapid check of the quality of the tilt-series and of the features of interest of the object. Application of the software to the study of the 3-D structure of active components of the nucleolus stained with silver is shown. [less ▲]
