Inspired from the experience of river contract in Wallonia (Belgium), the implementation of a first river contract has been initiated in a West-African country, Burkina Faso, since 2003. In the program of actions approved by the river committees in December 2005, the protection of water resources and grounds was taken into account. The first realized actions contributed to slow down the degradation of the ecosystems by recreating a space buffer between the river and the cultivated zones. A first project of restoration of the gallery forest alongside the stream was implemented to fight against desertification. This project arouses a strong mobilization of the local actors and demonstrates that such a contractual tool of participative management can make an interesting contribution in favour of an integrated management of waters and grounds. In a river contract, these two resources are associated in a common reflection which transcends still too often sector-based policies. [less ▲]

The set of problems resulting from metallic trace elements in vegetable gardens is increasingly in the heart of the question, evidently as much as a concern for public health than in terms of sustainable environmental management. Throughout this work, I aimed at studying particular aspects of metallic trace contaminations, mainly their dispersal across the soil and soil-plant transfers. Firstly, a toposequential study focused on the source of contamination was performed in order to allow the description of the relation between the distance from the source of contamination and the distribution of the metallic trace elements. It was observed that as far the distance from the source of contaminations is as low the concentrations of traces elements are. Secondly, two distinct experiments were performed to assess the soil-plant transfers. The first one consisted in a culture on a range of contaminated soils of two vegetables varieties (i.e. lettuce and endive). As a result, it was shown that the two varieties accumulated similarly the trace elements. The aim of the second experiment was to study the relationship of different organic matters on the phytoavailability of the traces elements. It was performed by culturing Spinacia oleracea on three contaminated soils where three different organic amendments (manure cow, manure cow-hen-horse, and compost) were added with four different concentrations. Results based on soils and S. oleracea metallic trace elements concentrations were compared to standards in application for the contaminations in trace elements in the soils and to the foodstuff standards fixing the concentrations limits of cadmium and lead in the vegetable-leafs. Finally, it was observed that it was the “manure of cow” amendment used at a rate of 120g/kg of soil that represented best way to avoid large transfers of metallic trace elements into the different parts of the plant susceptible to be eaten. The antagonist activity of two yeast strains (Pichia anomala K strain and Candida oleophila O strain) against the parasitic complex responsible for crowns rot of banana has been evaluated. Their efficiency has been tested on three separated fungi : Colletotrichum musae, Fusarium moiliforme, Cephalosporium sp. and on a parasitic complex formed by the association of these three fungi. Antagonist effects have been observed both on the two first fungi and on the complex. Strain O added at 108 ufc/ml on crowns which were previously inoculated with the complex showed the highest protection (56,0 %). This protection was superior to those observed against the fungi inoculated separately. The influence of the time between the addition of the O strain (108 ufc/ml) and the inoculation of the pathogens on the level of protection has also been measured. It appeared that protection by the O strain was remarkably reinforced when the strain was added 24 hours before the complex (57,0 %). This, in comparison with the additions performed 15 minutes or 3 hours after the pathogens inoculation. The utilisation of the O strain at 108 ufc/ml has been combined with the utilisation of 50μm polybags. These latter allow the formation of a modified atmosphere during the length of the bunches transfer. The protection level was at 61,0% when both methods were combined whereas protection by the yeast alone was of 41,0%. A strict correlation between the severity of the symptoms and the protection by the yeast has been highlighted. When the severity of the disease increases, protection by the yeast decreases. Obtaining ARN of quality and in sufficient quantity is an essential stage in the realization of cDNA-AFLP. The effectiveness of several protocols of RNA extraction was evaluated on peel and pulp of green and yellow bananas. On peel and pulp of green bananas, 4 protocols were tested and two of them allowed obtaining RNA of good quality and in sufficient quantity. They acts of the protocol described by Liu and al. (1998) and that proposed by the CIRAD (not published) and which is a modified version of Wan and Wilkins (1994). However, new tests must be realized in order to choose more adapted in the case of the extractions on peel and pulp of green bananas. Seven protocols were tested and compared on peel and pulp of yellow bananas. Among those, the protocols describes by Liu and al. (1998) and that proposed by the CIRAD (not published) gave the best results. [less ▲]

The aim of this study was to contribute to the development of the genetic evaluation system for Piétrain boars in Walloon Region. These boars were evaluated on growth, carcass quality and feed intake performances recorded on their crossbred progeny. The genetic evaluation for carcass quality was realized with a database of 60 546 data recorded during on-farm testing. The traits analysed were backfat thickness (BF), loin muscle depth (LMD) and meat percentage (%meat), measured on live animals by ultrasounds with the Piglog 105. The model developed was a multitrait animal model with random regression using linear splines. Fixed effects were sex, contemporary groups and heterozygosity. Random effects were permanent environment, additive genetic and residual effect. The variance components have been estimated by REML and Gibbs sampling methods. Heritability from 150 to 300 days was 0.56 to 0.75 for BF, 0.66 to 0.47 for LMD and 0.55 to 0.69 for %meat. Genetic correlations from 150 to 300 days were 0.1 to -0.05 between BF and LMD, -0.90 to -0.93 between BF and %meat, and 0.38 to 0.41 between LMD and %meat. According to the study of residuals, it seems that the model developed fits well the data. However, it would be interesting to review the variance components obtained for LMD. Moreover the position and number of knots for linear splines should be refined. Furthermore data provided by slaughterhouse will be incorporated into the genetic evaluation of carcass quality. Then this evaluation should be more accurate and comprehensive. [less ▲]

In this thesis, we present our contributions to the CoRoT mission and to the search for exoplanets with the photometric transit method. We developped a spectroscopic analysis method, APASS, which allows to obtain a precise determination of atmospheric physical parameters and abundances for stars with an unnegligeable rotational speed. We present APASS and the high-precision results we obtained for main target stars of the asteroseismological part of the CoRoT mission. Our results are in agreement with those obtained by other authors using different analysis methods, while beeing more precise. Furthermore, they show that the use of a spectroscopic analysis method based on equivalent widths measurements by gaussian or Voigt profiles fitting should be avoided for stars whose rotational velocity is significantly higher then the Sun’s, and that a method using synthetic spectra fitting for which the convolution is a free parameter should be prefered. Next, we investigate the potential of extrasolar planet transit surveys. We show that CoRoT has a very high potential for the detection of close-in giant planets, better than the one of the KEPLER mission. This latter reveals to be better for the detection of terrestrial planets. Nevertheless, CoRoT could detect a few giant telluric planets of short orbital period, provided that this kind of object is frequent in our galaxy. For ground-based surveys, our results based on the use of large telescopes and wide-field cameras seem to indicate that an important potential is also available from the ground. These results are nevertheless less reliable, mainly because of the lack of knowledge about the influence of systematic effects, and additional investigations using actual data will be necessary. We present then the deconvolution method MCS and the way we adapted it to planetary transit photometry. We present the results we obtained after analysis of actual data for OGLE-TR-123 (VLT/FORS2 data) and OGLE-TR-132 (VLT/FORS2 and NTT/SUSI2 data). These results are very encouraging and demonstrate the high potential of MCS for this kind of high-precision analysis. Finally, we present the future improvements we intend to install to obtain a still higher level of precision and to increase the speed of analysis. [less ▲]

This study relates the evolution of the fall migration of two avian species, the greenfinch (Carduelis c. chloris) and the linnet (Carduelis cannabina). The analysis of ringing data collected by the Belgian ringing scheme shows that “Nordic” greenfinch and linnets begin to cross Belgium in October, after the birds of Belgium and borderlands have begun to move and increase in number during the migration season until November. Visible migration, adiposity and biometric data were collected at Beaufays (Liège, Belgium) during the fall migration 1984. We could distinguish three periods of passage: a first period of low intensity, a intermediate period of mass-migration and a last period of low intensity, the intensive passage of the linnets taking place before the passage of the greenfinches and the young birds passing before the adults. Adiposity analysis reveals a succession of periods of thinness and fatness. Biometric study shows an increase in the number of birds whose wing length and wing shape indexes increase during the migration period when bill and tarsometatarsus length shorten. The biometric observation corroborates the ringing results, i.e. an increase of birds with marked migratory features along the fall migration. Meanwhile, this has to be confirmed by researches spreading on several years and the several sites, for breeding as well as far migratory populations. [less ▲]

This work takes place in the current trend aiming to find new substances that, once added to the formulation of bread, improve its characteristics. To do this, a homologous series of three emulsifiers, synthesized from glucuronic acid on which were grafted hydrocarbon chains of different lengths (from 14 to 18 carbon atoms), was obtained by glycosylation. The purification of these three surfactants is also described as feasible, with an almost complete separation of the two anomers obtained through this synthesis. Then these three synthesized products were applied to bakery by conducting laboratory tests (farinograph, alveograph) followed by micropanification tests in real conditions. In order to compare their results, two commercial references (DATEM and SSL) have also been used. It appears that none of the alkyl glucuronolactone possesses a “dough strengthener” effect while a “crumb softener” effect was noted (P < 0.05) for GlcA-O-C14 and -C16 in comparison with the “control”, with in the latter case, a greater decrease of firmness than with SSL, already popular for its action. The role of these molecules on staling was also analyzed and it seems that they slow down the hardening of bread after 27 h (P < 0.05) more than the commercial references, whereas after 48 h, only GlcA-O-C18 retains an advantage against the formulation without any emulsifier, even if it is no longer significant. [less ▲]
