In clinical neuropsychology, different rehabilitation techniques – e.g., vanishing cues, spaced retrieval, errorless learning – developed for patients with memory impairments are considered to make use of the preserved implicit memory abilities shown by these patients, and notably the perceptual priming effects (Harrison et al., 2007). It might be therefore important for clinician neuropsychologists to determine whether these abilities are preserved or not in their patients. However, and quite surprisingly, assessment tools aimed at assessing implicit memory abilities in brain damaged patients are lacking. The aim of this study was to build and validate a new perceptual priming task – the contrasted word task – which could be used by neuropsychologists in their clinical practice. Seventy-two young healthy participants were included in this study, and were administered the contrasted word task in which 60 words counterbalanced in 2 orders and 3 types of priming (Visual; Auditory; New) emerged gradually from a white background on a computer screen. Subjects were asked to press the response key when they thought they had recognized the word. Results show a perceptual priming effect which is specific to the exposure modality (i.e., no inter-modality transfer), proving the efficacy of the contrasted word task to highlight a facilitated identification for words that were shown previously, and confirming the perceptual specificity of the priming effect (Schacter, 1992). Many studies have shown that the level of development of phonological skills at nursery school is a good indicator of future success in reading acquisition. The aim of this project was to construct and validate a comprehensive phonological awareness test battery for French speaking children. For preschool-level French speaking children, validated phonological awareness test batteries are still lacking. A longitudinal study design was used from a sample of sixty-four children provided education for in the French Community of Belgium. The battery was designed to assess phonological awareness at the rhyme, syllable and phoneme level. A further characteristic of this battery was to use attractive pictorial material enhancing task compliance, and to use identification tasks targeting epiphonological processes as well as manipulation tasks targeting metaphonological processes. At first grade, the same children were given spelling and reading tests in order to determinate the predictif characteristic of this battery. This article briefly presents normative data of the most predictive and discerning tasks of future success in reading and spelling acquisition. [less ▲]

The dynamic evaluation of Parkinson's disease (PD)-related episodic gait disturbances in routine is challenging. Therefore, the aim of our study was to assess the reliability/validity of the Dynamic Parkinson Gait Scale (DYPAGS) composed of eight relevant items for the objective quantification of PD gait features: walking forwards/backwards/with dual-task, turning to both sides, imaginary obstacle avoidance with both legs and passing through narrow spaces. The scale was validated on thirty-five patients with mild to severe parkinsonism in their habitual "on-state". A shorter 6 item-version was designed on the basis of a principal component analysis. No significant floor/ceiling effect was detected. The internal consistency was excellent. The levels of interrater agreement, precision and minimal detectable change were adequate. The criterion-related validity was demonstrated by strong correlations with the DYPAGS scores and those at the gait subscales of the Tinetti Mobility Test and MDS-UPDRS. The construct validity was assessed by moderate-strong correlations with the Freezing of Gait Questionnaire, mobility index of the PD Questionnaire (PDQ-39), disease duration and levodopa equivalent daily doses. Statistical analyses using the coefficient of determination showed that both DYPGAS versions were superior to the other instruments to identify patients with gait disturbances with poorer response to dopaminergic treatment. Full and short DYPAGS are reliable instruments for the quantification of "on" PD-related episodic gait disturbances. The full version is sensitive to detect subtle disturbances in mild parkinsonism. The shorter one is easily administered and reliably quantifies gait disturbances in moderate to severe parkinsonism. We recommend their use for research and clinical practice. [less ▲]

Food quality standards can be analysed as results of a convention process. This paper focuses on a beef farm production and commercialisation chain. It analyses the confrontation between a farmer’s project and the industrial norms that are ruling the Belgian beef market. This confrontation leads to a kind of hybridation of quality definition, but the paper shows how quality definition is closely linked with the kind of underlying commitments. Principles and criteria of collective organisation are modelling quality standards in such a way that flexibility and sensitivity to mutual demands are more important that stability and generalisation. The construction of a girth distribution model for Norway spruce (Picea abies L Karst) plantations has been considered using 141 sample plots of 1 000 m². The effects of the theoretical distribution (comparison of the normal and Weibull distributions) and the estimation methods have been analysed. Despite the higher flexibility of the Weibull distribution, its use does not lead to a more accurate prediction of the distribution. The small number of samples measured in the plots seems to be the primary cause of the inaccuracy of the various models. Considering the data analysed, the normal distribution, which is easier to use, is proving to be more suitable for the creation of distribution model for such stands. [less ▲]
