The current architectural trends show a growing desire to design bridges including curved compressed and longitudinally stiffened plates. Designers are increasingly faced with the problem of designing such plates. There is currently no analytical approach to solve this problem. The solution consists in performing numerical simulations. However, this solution is very costly in both time and resources. The purpose of this work is to propose a simple analytic method for the design of curved longitudinally stiffened compressed plates. This approach consists in adapting the rules of the Eurocode EN 1993, part 1.5 (valid only for plane plates) on the basis of the foundations of the approach applicable to curved plates compressed but not stiffened. The aim is to allow the characterization of the loss in efficiency due to the curvature of the plate in the presence of longitudinal stiffeners. First, we performed a series of numerical simulations using the nonlinear finite element analysis program FINELG. The purpose of these simulations is twofold : on the one hand to analyze and to understand the behaviour of curved longitudinally stiffened plates ; secondly to obtain a representative set of ultimate loads that we can use in the future to validate the proposed methods. Three analytical design approaches were considered, each based on the general principle of replacing the basic plate by an equivalent isotropic plate whose parameters are adjusted accordingly. The three techniques differ in the principle of equivalence used. Two of these solutions have achieved promising results. [less ▲]

We present here amodel for the prediction of the elastic behaviour of elliptic notch hinges, including bending and shear in both planes, stretching and torsion. In a first step, an exact solution is established in the frame of the beam theory, making use of Sommerfeld's change of variable, which is well known in the lubrication theory. The second step is the deduction of the asymptotic solution for very thin hinges. Finally, and yhis is the most original part of our presentation, a simple corrective factor is deduced numerically, which enables to pass from the asymptotic solution to the exact one with a fair approximation in the practical range of thicknesses. <the simplicity of the obtained model has no equivalent in the literature, which is specially useful at the design stage. The electrochemical behavior of C60 and C70 has been investigated either in organic media or in water, using notably platinium ultramicroelectrode as the working electrode. The differences between the redox potentials of C60 relative to C70 indicate that it is easier to add electrons to C70 and its anions compared to the counterparts of C60. In the second part of the work, the solubilisation of C60 has been achieved using cyclodextrine or triton X-100. The determination of the amount of C60 per micelle was investigated using UV-Visible spectroscopy. [less ▲]

It could be misleading to consider that the social behaviour of newts and salamanders is simple and can be generalized. Indeed, individuals are faced with external and internal conditions which are extremely variable. In response to these factors, they may respond in a particular way. The behavioural variations, called alternative tactics, allow individuals to improve their fitness, i.e. to ensure the survival of their genes. They can be exhibited in reaction to a large range of factors such as the mere presence or density of competitors, the operational sex-ratio, the behaviour and kinship of the other individuals, the abiotic characteristics of the environment, the experience of the individuals involved. These alternative tactics are favoured in urodeles. Indeed, although the main process of fertilization is internal, they breed by means of a spermatophore deposited in the external environment. Each species of newts and salamanders exhibits specific behavioural patterns as they developed and evolved in particular environments which have exerted selective pressures on the individuals and in this way on the species. As a consequence, the understanding of patterns of behaviour requires that we know the environment in which they appeared. The main occurrence of parental care and territoriality in terrestrial environments may be explained by the features of these habitats in which eggs could not survive without protection, and in which adults may defend areas of particular interest and communicate by means of pheromones. All of these characteristics show that we have to study the behaviour of individuals of different species under several conditions. Without such an analysis, it would be difficult to understand biodiversity. [less ▲]
