Solar simulation and evaluation tools are essential for the design of novel energy and environmental strategies. To date, a number published studies in this area focused on the analysis of flat roofs and small urban areas. This paper presents a method, based on Geographic Information Systems (GIS), for defining the potential of photovoltaic solar energy over urban faßcades. The method enables the generation of 3D solar maps from two standard data sources, namely cadastral cartography and data on solar irradiance registered by the Spanish State Meteorological Agency (AEMET, for its initials in Spanish). A series of charts have been generated relating the urban and solar geometries as a result of the numerical model. The charts permit the study of the optimal parameters for the photovoltaic integration over faßcades. In addition, a study conducted over a representative urban area of Madrid is discussed as an example of the applicability of the discussed methodology. Finally, the adequacy of the Spanish Technical Edification Code (CTE, for its initials in Spanish), defining thresholds regarding the usability of photovoltaic energy, has been tested both theoretically and through the case study. Our study concludes that this regulation hinders the architectural integration of photovoltaic devices given the strict usability thresholds adopted. [less ▲]

Energy consumption in the buildings sector is very high and is expected to increase further due to improvements in living standard and increase in the world’s population. Incorporating appropriate solar passive features in climate responsive buildings are good options for energy conservation. This kind of building design integrates the micro-climate and architecture with human thermal comfort conditions and improves the building energy efficiency. From ancient times, people have used solar passive techniques in vernacular architectures throughout the world. However, still there is a lack of understanding, both in qualitative and quantitative aspects of solar passive techniques in vernacular architectures of North-Eastern India. A field study has been carried out to find out the various solar passive features in these naturally ventilated vernacular buildings in different bioclimatic zones of the region. The methodology of this work consists of survey of 150 households (50 houses in each bioclimatic zone) and, interacting with 300 occupants in each zone. The photographic evidences of solar passive features in these buildings are also collected. In this paper, the solar passive features related to building form and orientation, envelope design, shading, use of natural ventilation, internal space arrangements and activities of the habitants are explained for all the climatic zone of the region [less ▲]

Recent interest in small-scale solar thermal combined heat and power (CHP) power systems has coincided with demand growth for distributed electricity supplies in areas poorly served by centralized power stations. One potential technical approach to meeting this demand is the parabolic trough solar thermal collector coupled with an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) heat engine. The paper describes the design of a solar organic Rankine cycle being installed in Lesotho for rural electrification purpose. The system consists of parabolic though collectors, a storages tank, and a small-scale ORC engine using scroll expanders. A model of each component is developed taking into account the main physical and mechanical phenomena occurring in the cycle and based on experimental data for the main key components. The model allows sizing the different components of the cycle and evaluates the performance of the system. Different working fluids are compared, and two different expansion machine configurations are simulated (single and double stage). [less ▲]

A smart heating controller has a twofold objective: to save as much energy as possible while maintaining an acceptable comfort level in the building. Due to very large time constants in the building response, it has to anticipate internal and external disturbances. In the case of a passive solar commercial building, the need for anticipation is reinforced by important solar and internal gains. Indeed, large solar gains increase the energy savings potential but also the overheating risk. Optimal control theory presents an ideal formalism to solve this problem: its principle is to anticipate the building behaviour using a model and a forecasting of the disturbances in order to compute the control sequence that minimises a given cost function over the optimisation horizon. This cost function can combine comfort level and energy consumption. This paper presents the application of optimal control to auxiliary heating of a passive solar commercial building. Simulation-based and experimental results show that it can lead to significant energy savings while maintaining or improving the comfort level in this type of building [less ▲]

The Fondation Universitaire Luxembourgeoise (FUL) building (completed in 1986) has been selected as a Belgian candidate for participation in the IEA (International Energy Agency) Task XI project devoted to passive solar commercial buildings. Therefore, an evaluation methodology has been set up and a monitoring plan has been defined and performed. Together with this experimental investigation, intensive computer simulation work has defined an optimized design of the building. The main results show that the recorded performance can be improved to an extent of 15% energy savings, which yields a correct performance for a passive solar building in the temperate maritime Belgian climate. An experimental solar-assisted heat pump system with a hybrid ground-coupled storage at the F.U.L. in Arlon, Belgium, is described. It includes a 382 m2 solar roof, two types of water storages, heat storage in earth by horizontal exchangers, and heat pumps. One operating period (1984–1985) is analyzed. The data processed has shown that each of the subsystems has apparently performed adequately: annual collector efficiency is 0.41, heat pump C.O.P. range around 4. Despite important energy losses from the underground storage, the storage efficiency reaches 0.7. This effectiveness is mainly due to heat recovery below natural soil temperature and also to the use of buried tanks for short-term storage. The main difficulties are controlling the flow between these subsystems and developing an operating strategy that matches both the building's heat requirements and a good solar fraction. [less ▲]
