In the field of mental health workers, a new profession is emerging: animators of art workshops in psychiatry, also called ‘art therapists’. Our paper reveals the results of a survey conducted in Belgium among these new professionals. In portraying this new group of ‘distributed’ workers, we will discuss the reasons for their difficult process of professionalization [less ▲]

Our study about the institutionalization process of social regulation practices emerging at the inter-organizational level led us to develop an action-research methodology of entrepreneurial nature. This methodological choice gave rise to original and rich data, but simultaneously challenged our ability to analyze these data as well as our entrepreneurial role in a reflexive way. The central question of this paper is then twofold: on the one hand, can the researcher be an “entrepreneur”, and go beyond the simple production of knowledge? On the other hand, can the researcher with an entrepreneurial position produce scientific knowledge? We will answer these two questions thanks to two case studies, which will allow us to highlight various facets of acting as a “researcher-entrepreneur”. [less ▲]

Compromise as a commonsense concept and as an analogical concept: “family likenesses”. A practical epistemological reflection Should we consider the concept of compromise only in the presence of partners willing to negotiate and who both accept to make concessions in order to arrive at some form of agreement? Is it appropriate to talk of compromise when facing abstract entities or categories of opposing ideas? This article explores what would be necessary in order to be able to establish a link between commonsense compromise and analogical compromise, the two accepted meanings of the concept. Its ambition is to construct two operational concepts capable of rendering intelligible the multiple realities of compromise. Starting from the lexical field of the term compromise, an operational theoretical concept is constructed. The compromise is considered from its commonsense perspective and from its varied uses in relation to its different contexts in order to determine its principal specific characteristics. Finally, the concept of grammar is used for identifying what is shared by the two concepts and for establishing the foundations of a reflection on the issue of the social construction of compromise [less ▲]

Abstract : Body and soul. Passionately. The idea of emotions belonging to the bodily sphere as constituting a universal and stable fact should have fallen by the way a long time ago, but prejudices are stubborn. In spite of cultural diversity, the body is generally presented as nature in its universal essence. Different disciplines and schools of thought divided up the territory, each thus preserving its autonomy. Bodily matters and significations seemed thus condemned to divergence, each one positioned with regards to what the authors call “the seam” (la couture). Using competing theories, shifts from the seam are examined in order to arrive at the analysis of a critical point, there where “infiltrations” appear, that is infiltrations which will crack the seam and so provide a privileged analytical moment for the socio-anthropology of knowledge. We arrive then at a redistribution between what is interior and what is exterior, leading in turn to a redefinition of the body, the psyche and incarnated sensibility. The case of “wild children” is also examined. After consulting the classic ethnographic literature which deals with them, the analysis culminates with the inescapable importance of language for conceptualising the accession to humanity.. Using the post-communist experience in Romania, this article reflects upon the way to bring together the concepts of civil society and citizen commitment. Whilst civil society does not concentrate all the phenomena of citizenship, the concept remains nonetheless a privileged expression of citizen commitment. The question underlying this text is relatively simple: how should the study of citizen commitment be approached within the new civil societies of Central and Eastern Europe, and more specifically within the new Romanian civil society ? As simple as it may appear, the question becomes rapidly more complex as soon as the problems deriding from the concepts of civil society and citizen commitment themselves are taken into consideration but also because the post-communist experience is often treated in a homogeneous way whilst it is in fact empirically very heterogeneous. The organizational mechanisms of the “even and odd phenomenon” in a Belgian prison for women and its implications on the prison guards identities. The “even and odd prison guards phenomenon” is famous all around Belgian prisons. The following case study will specifically focus on how the staff is distributed in two homogeneous guard teams: one is referred to as “socially-oriented” and the other as "security-oriented". First, we will determine the mechanisms of the organizational rules and regulation within the prison district. Second, we will concentrate on how prison guards construct their own personal identity. We believe this work will contribute to a better understanding of the prison guard profession. [less ▲]

In their scientific researches, sociologists perform interviews, observations, descriptions, interpretations and attributions of motivations. Such cognitive operations can also be found in everyday activities of lay people. For decades, American neopraxeologists have conducted studies of the common exercise of this “natural” sociology. More recently, the French pragmatic turn get involved in the same kind of empirical fields. These investigations of the common-sense activities that give their roots to the sociology contribute to the epistemological foundation of sociology; they are named respecification. Through the review of the empirical studies lead by both neopraxeologists and French pragmatists, this article clarifies their common (respecification-based) research program. Rather than arguing that the former influenced the latter, the similarity underlines that, far from relativist critics, these respecification-based researches are ultimately involved in founding and strengthen sociology.
