Objectives Patellar and calcaneal tendinopathies remain very common musculoskeletal disorders in athletes. The Victorian Institute of Sports Assessment – Patellar and – Achilles (VISA-P and VISA-A), English questionnaires developed respectively to assess the severity of patellar and calcaneal tendinopathies. The purpose of our study was to validate a French version of these questionnaires. Materials and methods The French translation and intercultural adaptation of the VISA-P and the VISA-A are made according to international recommendations. For these adaptations, 92 (VISA-P) and 116 (VISA-A) subjects were recruited and divided into 3 groups (pathological, asymptotic and sporting risk), in order to test these psychometric properties. All these subjects also had to answer to the MOS SF-36 for the validity of construct. Results The mean VISA-PF scores were 99 for the healthy people, 53 for patients with patellar tendinopathy and 86 for the athletes. The VISA-PF shows excellent reliability with an inter-class correlation coefficient of 0.99. The internal consistency was 0.9 (Cronbach's alpha). The VISA-PF shows low correlations with the divergent sub-scales of the SF-36 and moderate correlations with the convergent sub-scales of the SF-36. The mean VISA-AF scores were 99 in the healthy group, 59 in the pathological group, and 94 in the group of athletes. The VISA-AF shows excellent reliability with an inter-class correlation coefficient of 0.99. The internal consistency was 0.92 (Cronbach's alpha). The VISA-AF shows low correlations with the divergent sub-scales of the SF-36 and moderate correlations with the convergent sub-scales of the SF-36. No floor and ceiling effects were detected during the evaluation of the two questionnaires. Conclusion The French versions of the VISA-P and VISA-A questionnaires are therefore French comprehensible adaptation, reliable and adapted to French-speaking patients suffering from patellar or calcaneal tendinopathies. PAPS have been proposed one to two times per day pendant periods of 2 to 4 weeks. Pupils' involvement, positive effects informally observed on academic learning and the wish of the pupils to continue the experience would support the interest of the movement breaks. [less ▲]

Introduction. — The aim of the study was to verify, in a non-professional handball female, if theintroduction of two short workouts per week during all season has a positive impact on muscularperformance.Methods. — Eighteen female playing handball at the top Belgian level were monitored duringthe complete season. Ten of these girls (‘‘Muscu’’ group) achieved, in addition to their usualtraining, two short (30 minutes) strength training sessions weekly. The other (‘‘Control’’ group)followed the usual training, without any strength training session. A battery of tests (leg power,arm power, vertical jump, sprint, throwing, flexibility) has been set up to four times during theseason to follow up muscular performance.Results. — According to the literature, the ‘‘Control’’ group showed any change in performanceduring the year. By contrast, ‘‘Muscu group results demonstrated that the short strength trai-ning program was efficient, with significant improvements in leg power (P < 0.005) and sprint(P < 0.05) tests. Increase in vertical jump was very close to the level of significance (P = 0.06).Arms power did not improve but appeared to be superior in the ‘‘Muscu’’ group in comparisonwith ‘‘Control’’ at the end of the season, which was not the case at the beginning.© 2013 Elsevier Masson SAS. Tendinopathies are common and frequently resisting to actual conservative measures. The aim of this review was to gather the actual knowledge concerning the platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatment in tendon lesion. The interest of this well-known technique, applied since almost 15 years in facial and dental surgery, is growing in the sports world because of its potential ability to treat refractory tendinopathies and to get back quickly a functional use. However, given the relative recent knowledge about PRP in sports medical, the studies could not yet reproduce the beneficial effects obtained in-vitro. Most studies about the subject indeed show an improvement in symptoms after PRP treatment but, because of the many biases introduced, such as the lack of population, the lack of control group or the many different kind of PRP used, the studies cannot be conferred a high level of evidence. Therefore, there is no evidence of formally advise the use of PRP in the treatment of tendinopathy. So the main research field in the close future will have to determine a standard for the manufacture of PRP and the protocols of the future studies in order to be able to compare them. [less ▲]

Aims of the study : the aim of the present study was to explore the interest of inertial load-velocity and load-power relationships for establishing resistance training zones. Materials and methods : 35 subjects went twice at the laboratory. The first session was used to determine bench press one repetition maximal (1RM) while the second session was used to determine load-velocity and load-power relationships by the means of an inertial dynamometer. For each subject four major training zones (maximal velocity, power-velocity, strength-power, maximal strength), defined from the 1RM, were compared to the corresponding training zones defined from inertial load-velocity and load-power relationships. Results: training zones defined from the 1RM are significantly different (p<0,001) from the ones based on load-velocity and load-power relationships. According to load-power and load-velocity relationships results, maximal bench press velocity should be trained from 0 to 23% of the 1RM ; power-velocity should be trained from 25 to 54% of the 1RM ; strength-power should be trained from 54 to 82% of the 1RM and maximal strength should be trained with superior loads. Such muscular profiles defined with inertial dynamometers allow a more acute and individualised prescription for power-velocity resistance training. [less ▲]

Introduction : the purpose of this study was to investigate the validity and reliability of an inertial dynamometer using accelerometry. Methods : fourteen subjects were tested during three successive sessions at four increasing loads (30, 50, 70 and 95% of the 1RM). Maximal force, velocity and power performances were simultaneously assessed by the Myotest (Myotest S.A., Switzerland), an inertial dynamometer using accelerometry, and by another control valid dynamometer witch combine accelerometer and linear position transducer. At three first loads, only minor differences appeared between both dynamometers, correlations were excellent and coefficients of variation were good and similars. However, at 95% of the 1RM, Myotest validity and reliability became insufficient. Conclusion : Bench press inertial assessment with accelerometer appeared valid and reliable at 30, 50 and 70% of the 1RM, but not at 95% of the 1RM. [less ▲]

Introduction. -The goal of this study was to check if exercise raises oxidative stress markers in overweight teenagers (n = 29) compared to non obese (n = 17) ones. Synthesis. -Blood markers of insulin resistance, inflammation and oxidative stress were measured at rest and/or after a maximal exercise. At rest, the overweight teenagers exhibited an insulin resistance, an inflammation and an oxidative stress. After exercise, plasmatic myeloperoxidase and lipid hydroperoxides were increased only in overweight teenagers. However, the differences between groups disappeared when the values were reported to VO2 Pie suggesting that exercise intensity consitutes the major oxidative stress factor. Conclusions. -The relations between rest insulin resistance, inflammation and post-exercise oxidative stress indicate that those parameters contribute in post-exercise oxidative stress. Introduction. - This study used an iso-inertial dynamometer to investigate the influence of counter-movement and barbell throwing during bench press exercise. A critical analysis of these modalities during muscular evaluation was also performed. Methods. - The action of muscle stretch during the counter-movement induced an increase in average velocity and a shortening of the time to reach the peak power and peak velocity. The barbell throwing did not alter the initial part of the movement yet lengthened the propulsive phase and delayed the braking phase. Consequently, maximal power and maximal velocity performances were improved. However, the throwing of the barbell requires its catch when failing down, which could be potentially harmful. Conclusion. - The counter-movement and the throwing of the barbell significantly change the iso-inertial performances through a bench press exercise.
