[more ▼] Purpose: The objective was to determine the psychometric properties and the clinical application of a new Quality of Life self-assessment questionnaire suitable for adolescents 13 to 18 years old: the “Inventaire Systémique de Qualité de vie pour Adolescents” (ISQV-A). Methods: This was a cross-sectional validation study. 171 French adolescents have completed the ISQV-A. Other tools were used: the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children (STAIC), the Children’s Depression Inventory (CDI). Results: The internal consistency of the four indices of the ISQV-A (state, goal, rank and gap) is satisfactory. All scores have their own specificity. The data show the convergent validity, test-retest fidelity and applicability of the ISQV-A. Conclusions: The adequacy of this new tool seems evident to highlight the adolescent’s quality of life. We will also discuss its clinical relevance into a cognitive behavioural approach. [more ▼] This article discusses the measurement of quality of life for old people through the preliminary validation study (applicability, reliability and validity) of a questionnaire specifically designed for this population: the Quality of Life Systemic Inventory for old people (QLSI-65+©). This validation is based on a sample of 54 non-institutionalized adults aged 65 to 85 years. All completed a sociodemographic and medical questionnaire, the QLSI-65+©, the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) and the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS). The results show a good applicability of the QLSI-65+©. The internal consistency of the indices (State, Goal, Rank and Gap) is very satisfactory. All indices are correlated each other to varying degrees (reliability). Correlations between State, Goal and Gap QLSI-65+© global scores and GDS and SWLS total scores are significant (convergent validity). Finally, State, Goal and Gap QLSI-65+© global scores of the sample are significantly better than those of 17 informal caregivers of people with dementia (validity in terms of know group differences). [more ▼] This study approaches the question of quality of life measure in paediatric oncology. The main aim is to compare the quality of life level of children (8-12 years) undergoing (T) and off (HT) oncological treatments by using the French and the Portuguese modular versions of the Child Quality of Life Systemic Inventory (QLSI-C©). The Portuguese sample consists of 26 children T and 14 HT while the Belgian sample includes 20 children T and 35 HT. Results demonstrate statistically significant differences between the T and HT groups, particularly for the French version of the QLSI-C©. They also give evidence of the influence of some clinical and sociodemographic variables on the global quality of life score, mainly for the Portuguese version of the QLSI-C©. In conclusion, findings demonstrate the clinical interest of French and Portuguese versions of the QLSI-C© and their capacity to distinguish children undergoing oncological treatments from children off these treatments. [more ▼] This study examines the processes and the life domains of the Child Quality of Life Systemic Inventory (ISQV-E(c) in French - Missotten, Etienne & Dupuis, 2007), involved in the suffering of depressed children, assessed with the CDI. These questionnaires were administered to 453 to school age children (8-12 years old) and they all spoke French (273 French, 180 Belgian). An initial analysis was undertaken to verify the nature of the model, additive vs multiplicative, underlying the ISQV-E(c). Five factors were tested: the Goal, the Discrepancy (distance between State and Goal), Speed, Rank and the Gap. Regression analysis revealed that only the Goal and the Discrepancy are significantly related to suffering depression (additive model). From these two factors, a second analysis was performed to account for domains of life most involved in suffering from depression. The results dealt with a PLS path modeling helped to update the 10 domains of life, of the twenty-evaluated by the ISQV-E(c), likely to predict depressive suffering of children. The specific contribution of the ISQV-E(c) is discussed in relation to depressive affect assessed with the CDI. [more ▼] This study addresses the relationship between the capacity of emotional facial expressions (EFEs) recognition and self-esteem in children placed in an anxious social situation. Seventy children (8 – 12 years) were placed in an anxious social situation of performance in which they were instructed to count aloud backwards, beginning at 200 in decrements of 13. After that, children were assessed on a decoding test of 16 photographs depicting EFE. For each photograph, they evaluated the presence of nine types of emotions. They also completed the Self-Perception Profile for Children (Pierrehumbert et al., 1987). No correlations emerged between the accuracy of EFE recognition and an increase of anxious feelings after the anxious social situation. However, self-esteem was correlated with performance on the EFE recognition test. Moreover, the lower the child’s level of self-esteem was, the more he/she perceived negative emotions in EFEs. In conclusion, social anxiety doesn’t seem to interfere with EFEs recognition performance in an anxious social situation. However, low level of self-esteem in children appears to be associated with deficits and interpretative bias in EFEs recognition in an anxious social situation. [more ▼] The purpose of this article is to assert the current state of the scientific literature on the issues regarding empathy in alcohol-dependents patients (ADs). We will first explain what the term « empathy » covers and the distinction made between cognitive and emotional empathy. We will describe then the different studies that got interested in the capacities for empathy in ADs patients. These studies concern predominantly one precise aspect of cognitive empathy: the capacity to infer an emotional state on the basis of emotional facial expressions (EFEs). Up to now, the other domain of cognitive empathy –the decoding of affective prosody and of nonverbal mulimodal stimuli and the attribution of intentions and beliefs– and emotional empathy are under-investigated in alcohol-dependence. In this review of the literature, we will identify the consequences that empathy problems could have on interpersonal relationships as well as the domains that still have to be to investigate regarding empathy in ADs patients, and notably the remediation of these deficits. [more ▼] Anxiety sensitivity (AS) is the fear of anxiety-related sensations, arising from beliefs that the sensations have harmful physical, psychological or social consequences. AS is considered as a risk factor for the development and preservation of anxiety disorders. It is thus important to understand the development of AS to have a preventive act of anxiety disorders. This article is a synthesis of studies that have investigated the etiology of child AS, to extract explanatory models. Some factors are playing a role in the development of AS: biologic, interpersonal and environmental factors. Results indicated that studies have investigated those factors alone, and those factors accounted a part of incremental variance in child AS. To improve the understanding of development of AS, a integrate model with some factors – sex of children, sex of parents, sources of learning, emotional and relational state of parents- may be investigate in future studies. [more ▼] The ability to understand the emotional states of others is necessary in order to develop high quality interpersonal relationships. Alcohol-dependents (AD) display interpretative errors when decoding emotional facial expressions (EFE). EFE communicate information not only regarding emotional states but also regarding interpersonal intentions. The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether, exposed to EFE, AD differ from healthy individuals in attributions of interpersonal intentions of dominance and affiliation. The purpose of dominance is to control the environment and the purpose of affiliation is to maintain the relationship with the object. In the present study, twenty AD and 20 healthy subjects attributed intentions of dominance and affiliation to 12 faces portraying joy, anger or sadness. Results revealed that AD differ from healthy individual in attribution of dominance but not of affiliation. AD make mistakes when decoding expressed emotions. The present study suggests that, compared to healthy subjects, they also tend to anticipate, in a biased way, interpersonal intentions. [more ▼] Behavioural and psychological signs and symptoms - BPSD are clinical features of dementia. They have considerable impact on the daily life of patients and their caregivers. The aim of this study is to show the importance of these disorders in dementia semiology and to assess differences in their prevalence across levels of severity of dementia. The sample is made up of 160 subjects with dementia older than 65 years old. Diagnosis of dementia was based on DSM-IV criteria. BPSD were assessed with the NeuroPsychiatric Inventory-NPI and dementia staging was measured with Clinical Dementia Rating/Modified-CDR-M. Results show that prevalence of delusions is more important in severe dementia and that prevalence of agitation/ aggression is more important in profound dementia. These data may help to clarify objectives and treatment of BPSD. This study raises also some methodological problems with the NPI and underlines the importance to define the different disorders included in certain NPI domains accurately. [more ▼] This study approaches the question of the evolution of the quality of life (QOL) measures in older patient populations. On base of the report of the weak number of instruments specifically adapted to this population and of the absence of instruments taking into account both the expectations and the priorities of the individuals, we wished to make the adaptation of a tool for adult, the Quality of life Systematic Inventory (QLSI©). In this prospect, the main aim of this preliminary research was to test the evaluative approach of the QLSI© within a population of old people and to obtain useful information for the construction of a version of the QLSI© for old people. 135 voluntary subjects, from 65 to 85 years old, living at home and having a good health participated in the study. The questionnaire revealed a good QOL which could be explained by the combination of diverse factors such as a good current situation, a lesser importance given to the diverse life domains and the relatively weak goals. The results demonstrated the relevance of the QLSI© but also showed the necessity of certain modifications to make this questionnaire more specific to the old person.
