Stigmatization related to age (i.e., ageism) is a widespread phenomenon in the modern industrial societies where older people are perceived as cognitively incompetent. Therefore negative stereotypes about age-related cognitive decline may have a detrimental influence on older adults on their cognitive performance. The aim of the present review is to understand how stereotypes can influence the performance of the elderly on cognitive tests. We first describe the stereotype threat phenomenon by providing an overview of situations likely to produce stereotype threat, as well as contextual and personal characteristics that moderate its effects. Possible mechanisms underlying these influences on cognitive performance are also presented. Secondly, we address self-stereotyping, which explains long-term negative effects of stereotypes and their unconscious influence on older adults’ cognitive performance. However, some age stereotypes have also positive effects on aged people, as shown by some studies describing such beneficial effects of positive stereotypes on cognitive performance. Finally we try to understand why negative age stereotyping has a much stronger influence on important behavioral outcomes among older adults than does positive age stereotyping. Given all these results, we examine how negative age stereotypes may impact older adults’ cognitive performance in real-world settings such as during a cognitive assessment. [less ▲]

The consequences of sarcopenia on quality are difficult to evaluate and consequently are quite poorly studied. The few studies assessing the quality of life in sarcopenic subjects currently use generic quality of life questionnaires such as SF36 and EQ5D. The SarcoPhAge study, conducted on a cohort developed in Liège including 534 subjects of 65 years or older, suggested that sarcopenic subjects present a significant worse quality of life in the domains of physical function compared to nonsarcopenic subjects. Generic tools do not cover exhaustively all the areas of potential dysfunction concerned in this geriatric syndrome. Yet, there is no specific and validated quality of life questionnaire for sarcopenia. It would be useful to have at our disposal a sarcopenia specific quality of life questionnaire to assess not only the prospective quality of life of sarcopenic subjects but also to assess the efficacy and the rele [less ▲]

Purpose of the study: to verify the interest of vibrosphère™ in the rehabilitation of geriatric fallers Material and method: 24 persons aged 85.5 hospitalized in geriatric wards for a fall during the last 6 months are divided in 2 groups. The group one has performed a classical revalidation and the group 2 a rehabilitation with the technics of vibrosphère™, both during 9 days. The assessment is realized on Day 0 and day 10. It consists in a walking test with Locometrix, a postural assessment a time get up and go and the fall efficacity scale. A control group of 20 non faller subjects aged 79,9 is constituted. Results: in the second population a gain (p< 0.05) is obtained for speed of gait, and also a tendancy in a better frequency, length, symmetry and regularity of step. Postural status is better at the end of the 9 days in the grouped using vibrosphère™. The 2 ways of rehabilitation have similar effects on the gait and balance parameters. Conclusion: our study confirms efficiency of rehabilitation program for 9 days which is rather short. The improvements show that vibrosphère™ is a well adapted tool to revalidate geriatric fallers. Its effect on balance should explain the benefit observed in the gait parameters. This technique seems to be complementary with classical rehabilitation in old geriatric hospitalized patients.
