The availability of components built in CMC technology forms in major areas a prerequisite for the realisation of future reusable launcher engines. Apart from the efforts to introduce CMC components in the hot areas of the engine like nozzles and thrust chambers there exists an important optimisation potential in the engines through the use of CMC components in (cryogenic) turbo-pumps. By replacement of the ball bearings in the pumps by journal bearings, a significantly higher lifetime can be obtained and the inherent limitation of the turning speed of the pumps can be widely extended. The CMC journal bearings of MAN have proven their quality and reliability in numerous applications in industrial pumps. Based on this experience a research program was initiated by DLR and funded by means of the BMBF and MAN to investigate the use of this bearing type under the conditions of a cryogenic turbo-pump. Major results are presented in this paper. [less ▲]

Model updating techniques using frequency response function (FRF) data are studied in this paper. The numerical techniques are discussed for implementation with a large commercial finite element (FE ) code. System equivalent reduction expansion process is adopted to reduce the complete FE solutions onto the experimental degrees of freedom. The rank-deficiency difficulty with this method is overcome using either of two numerical techniques: diagonal perturbation and singular value decomposition. This second technique is also used in solving the updating equation. Experimental FRF data are compared with the FE solutions, and the updated model parameters are obtained via an iteration procedure. A simplified frequency domain assurance criterion is proposed to evaluate the correlation between the FE model and the measured structure at the chosen frequencies. After verifying the efficiency of the methods with several benchmark tests, the program is applied to an aeroplane model test. Some conclusions are given and remaining problems illustrated. [less ▲]

Nowadays, most of turbine engine tests are processed using an open loop, i.e. the measurements are verified and treated a posteriori, sometimes weeks or months after the end of the test. The scope of the present project is to develop a new methodology which enables real time detection of faulty measurements and the suppression of the source of these faults during the test. This implies the development of a method which is sufficiently robust to cope with a lot of faulty data (up to 20 to 30 % of the measurements). Most of the existing methods make use of a least square approach so that a set of parameters is sought which minimizes the RMS error between the measurements and the values provided by a numerical model of the installation. This type of approach is efficient in finding whether a set of measurements is valid but cannot locate the fault(s). In this paper an alternative is proposed based on a distribution of the measurement noise introduced by Huber. This so-called robust validation method has been tested on a single spool, single flow and variable geometry nozzle turbojet. Both the least square and Huber's function approaches have been tested and compared in terms of efficiency. The robust estimator based on Huber's error function has shown to be much more powerful for both finding an invalid set of measurements and locating the faulty measurements. [less ▲]

Owing to the fact that a correct evaluation of form errors is particularly difficult by the classical ways, it seems more efficient to develop numerical algorithms from 3D measures. Several methods are described, including direct and iterative ones. A new method is proposed, which is based on Lp-norms and a specialized algorithm. It proved to be the most effective and robust one in every studied application. Another problem which is seldom studied, concerns the sensibility of form errors to measure errors. A theory is presented which leads to a very simple result. [less ▲]
