Memory in not a unified system. It's composed of independant but interacting systems. Cognitive neuropsychology showed dissociations between these systems in patients with various brain lesions. The episodic memory system is devoted to the processing of personally lieved events. The predominant role played by frontal regions in underlying episodic memory has been fully documented. Moreover, the episodic memory disfunctions may lead to illusions of memory such as false memories, confabulations or hallucinations. [less ▲]

Based on examples given in the previous chapters, the author discusses the different levels of the animal models used in psychopharmacology, from the short tests applied in screening to supposed equivalents of the psychopathological syndromes. The author notes the need to specify the limits of the explicative or predictive goal in each case. The example of acquired helplessness is used to demonstrate the fragility of the analogies between observed animal behavior and psychiatric disorders. The author draws attention to little explored aspects of animal behavior in psychopharmacology such as individual history and ontogenesis as well as interindividual differences and differential reactivity. Finally, the contribution of ethology is idscussed under its dual aspect criticizing the analysis of animal behavior in the laboratory and psychiatric approach that also fails to take into account the insertion of the subject in a biotope.
