The first part is an analytical study based on an analysis of cadastral information. It presents facts and recent evolutionary processes of land use in Wallonia, especially agriculture, forest, waste land and urbanized areas. The information is based on the municipality scale. The paper draws a compartmentalization of Wallonia: in 1992, urbanized areas represented over 20% and 40% in the urban-industrial trench and in Walloon Brabant, spilling area for Brussels population. In Ardennes, Loraine and Fagne Famenne, Forest prevailed occupying over 40% of the land. Agriculture was the main land used over 70% on low loess plateaux and with over 55% especially in Condroz and Central Ardennes. There was a slow decrease of agriculture between 1982 and 1992, usually with less than 10% for a third of the region. Forest erratically fluctuated between -5% and +5%. On the contrary urbanized areas grew everywhere with peaks around Liege, in Walloon Brabant and along motorways. It was the result of both residential urbanization and the standard increase of land use per inhabitant. The analysis shows that, during the seventies, peaks of urbanization coincide quite well with demographic evolution typology. The second part is a continuation of the preceding analytical study. It presents typology and evolution synthesis in order to divide Wallonia into districts and analyses some mechanics especially urbanization and land policy. The analytical maps lead to the building up of two types of municipalities: urban and country land use municipalities. Within the country type, five subtypes have been characterized upon the agriculture and forest combinations. Urbanization mechanics are responsible for the schematic division into two parts by a line, the south border of Condroz and Herve plateau. Urbanization concerns first the urban-industrial trench and Walloon Brabant. Hainaut is an forests also divide Wallonia between the north and the south. The agricultural areas are first victims of the urbanization progress. [less ▲]

This article tends to compare several sectors for pedestrians in the cities of Belgium as well as France. In general, their businesses structures differ in function of the neighborhoods or sites selected for the landmark of a pedestrian. Thus, three types of sectors for pedestrians can be characterized : businessman's site, the old neighborhoord in process of destruction (historical entity) and the neighborhood with attractions and restaurants. In fact, the presence of pedestrian in a street or a neighborhood may precipitate a decline in business flourishment by a combination in a reduction of access in the premises (elimination of small businesses selling heavy materials and/or those occupy a large place and those which are involved in frequent deliveries) and an uprising in rents (minimization of businesses selling certain products which are not essential and/or at a fix price). Since 1960 marked changes have affected peripheral distribution in Europe. These modifications are due to the increase of new formulas such as superettes, supermarkets, food discount stores, hypermarkets, large specialised stores and shopping centres. In this article, we have tried to set out the main characteristics of these shops and compare their development in each country. We have furthermore tried to define the commercial and spatial repercussions of these complexes which, accordingly, have again brought up the problem of urbanistic and socio¬economic integration of large shopping stores in the periphery. The problem of a company's choice of a precise location has for a long time preoccupied researchers. Traditionally, any analysis of localisation was based on diagrammatic frameworks built up from a basis of rational decisions which maximised profits and minimised costs. For several years now research has tended more towards analysing management behaviour and studying the actual process of decision. Founded on better social bases, a new school of thought has emerged. It recognizes that motivations are not always rational, that decisions are conditioned by the management's perceptions and that they are related to the amount of information taken into consideration at the time of the choice. Not only are the economical factors analysed but also the influence of preferences and the spatial images¡ Confined for many years to statistical surveys and to very detailed descriptions of regions or activities, industrial geography is now participating actively in this renewal of research. French-speaking geographers are, however, not often very familiar with this type of research. We, therefore, considered it useful to attempt a synthesis of the problem by examining, first of all, the traditional diagrammatic frameworks of localisation and then the studies of industrial' behaviour.
