In locomotor biomechanics, three high groups of contraints are commonly encountared : pressure, traction and torsion. In supra-maximal conditions, all of these contraints would be responsible of some equine diseased locomotor systems. In order to understand better the contraints in the equine locomotor dynamics, some investigations have been carried out. Moreover, some measurement methods, based on the mechanics of Newton, have been performed. This review shows the different measurement techniques and introduces the mechanical basis that are compulsory for the understanding of the equine locomotor apparatus functioning. [less ▲]

Abstract Mitral regurgitation (MR) is a one of the most common cardiac disease in the equine species. Furthermore, it is the valvular disease that presents the higher risk to be associated with reduced athletic performance, to evolve into congestive heart failure and to become life threatening. The clinical diagnosis of MR depends mainly on the expertise of the veterinarian in cardiology and is above all based on cardiac auscultation. In all of the cases, the definitive diagnosis and the evaluation of the disease severity require performing a Doppler echocardiographic examination. Signs of left ventricular and/or left atrial overload, large regurgitation jet, pulmonary arterial hypertension or significant arrhythmias are negative prognosis factors. Clinical signs of congestive heart failure make the prognosis worse. Other echocardiographic parameters are used in human and dogs in order to determine the severity of the MR, but have been not validated in horses. Treatment of mitral regurgitation in the equine species is symptomatic and directed against the development of a congestive heart failure. A lot of drugs that are used in human or dogs are of limited value in horses for financial reasons and/or lack of pharmacokinetics and pharmacologic data in equine species. [less ▲]

In most mammals, the ingestion of colostrum is essential to the survival of the newborn. The main objective of this work is to synthesize data from studies on colostrum, especially on the physiology of its production and its chemical composition. The sequence of events leading to the production of colostrum is identical in all species. However, the duration of these phases varies. Colostrum is rich in immunoglobulins (IgG, IgA, IgM, IgE and IgD), nutrients (proteins, lipids, lactose, minerals), hormones and growth factors (prolactin, insulin, estrogens, IgF), immune cells (leukocytes cells, epithelial cells), vitamins (carotene, vitamin E) and finally in enzymes such as lactoperoxidase and alkaline phosphatase. Its composition is dependent on many factors that can be divided into intrinsic ones, related to the animal, and extrinsic or environmental ones. Colostrum contains all the elements necessary to not only protection against attacks of pathogens but also to rapid growth of young animals. [less ▲]

The objective of the present work was to describe the cyclicity of Ouled Djellal ewes born one year before regarding their live weight and body condition score, during the autumn season. The study has been driven in the region of Guelma, East of Algeria, on 104 ewes belonging to two farms. At the beginning of the study, ewes from farms A and B had similar ages but differed in live weight and body condition scores. The concentration of progesterone wasdetermined by radioimmunoassay. The level of spontaneous cyclicity, as well as the plasmatic level of the progesterone, were influenced significantly by both live weight and body condition score (P<0.0001). If the first was in favor of ewes with high body weight and body condition score, the second seemed to be higher in slim cyclic ewes. The body fatness appears to influence positively the age of puberty. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

Cottonseed by-products arevery high in nutrients and theirchemical composition varieshighly according to the varietiesof cotton and the various treatmentsaiming at extracting oil.Their use in animal nutrition, andparticularly in broilers, is especiallylimited by the free gossypolwhich can damage varioustissues and also decreases theperformances of growth and dietefficiency. The incorporation ofcottonseed meal in broilers dietmay be increased following chemicalbinding of free gossypol, but these methods have drawbacks.Ferrous sulfate denaturesfeed and the use of lysine to bindgossypol is limited by the expensivenessof this product while thebiological fermentation is verycomplex and inapplicable, as tonow, on a large way. Glandlessvarieties could be incorporatedat a very high level in diets andtherefore could contribute todecrease the protein feed requirements.Unfortunately, agronomicconstraints associated to thesecrops have limited the research inthis way. The production of varietiesin which gossypol secretionwould be inhibited before theseed germination should alleviatethe limitations associated to cottonby-products. [less ▲]

Staphylococcus (S.) aureus is a major pathogen for mastitis in dairy cattle. In most cases, S. aureus causes long-lasting subclinical and chronic bovine mastitis and leads to significant economic losses by reducing the quantity and the quality of the milk produced. The pathogenesis of S. aureus mastitis includes the ability to persist within host cells and involves multiple virulence factors including toxins, surface proteins and polysaccharides. The numerous vaccines that have been developed induce a specific immune response against these different factors. These different vaccine approaches are described and classified depending on the target antigen used. Moreover, some recent vaccine strategies against human S. aureus infections are also discussed and could eventually be used for the design of new bovine vaccines. Although most of bovine vaccines induce specific humoral response, to date, no vaccine has been described to protect efficiently against experimental and naturally occurred bovine S. aureus mastitis. In conclusion, this type of immune response and the broad antigenic variability of S. aureus strains can partially explain the lack of protection observed during most of vaccine trials. [less ▲]

In many songbirds species, wherein we can find the domestic canary (Serinus canaria), singing is generally produced either to defend a territory or to attract a mate. The Song Control System is a neural specialization, mostly located in telencephalic regions of the brain and associated to the control of song learning, perception and production. External factors such as testosterone (T), photoperiod and social cues have been described to modulate singing behaviour. Parallel to the song behaviour, some of the song control system nuclei (HVC, RA and Area X) demonstrate a puzzling amount of seasonal plasticity. Their volumes varies seasonally based on changes in cell spacing, neuropile size, dendritic arborisation and in the case on the nidopallial nucleus HVC on the incorporation of newborn neurons. We present here a review of this curious phenomenon of adult neuroplasticity associated to a complex behaviour, which doesn’t occur as far as we know in the mammalian adult brain [less ▲]

Lesions to the horse’s tendon are very frequent and are a non negligible reason for early retirement of sport and leisure horses. For decades man has been searching for “the” treatment but unfortunately most of the known treatments have empiric bases and very few have actually proven their real efficiency. Diagnostic techniques like ultrasound allows to better evaluate the improvements made in tendonitis therapies. Stem cells and gene therapy are probably the most innovating of them, but their long-term effectiveness still has to stand the test of times. This article gives an overview of the possible treatments of tendonitis today. [less ▲]
