From the data in Babcock's catalogue of magnetic stars and the data compiled by Bertaud, the proportion of Ap stars showing striking overabundancies of Si, Cr, Mn, Sr and Eu is deduced in terms of the spectral type. However this correlation with the spectral class originates at least as much from variations of the visibility of the lines with temperature than from a real dependance of the abundance anomalies on the spectral type. The abundance factors in the Ap stars in regard to the normal ones increase in the average more or less exponentially with the atomic number or the atomic mass. [less ▲]

As the atmospheric scattering is suppressed, observations of very low contrast phenomena are made easier. Closer observations of the solar system objects are made possible. 2) Infra red region. Observations taken from 30 km high are freed of most of the atmospheric absorption. But some infra red observations require the use of satellites (for example scanning of the whole sky within spectral regions). Needed observations are reviewed. [less ▲]

The continuum is weak and confined into a small central region. The structures of the OH -, NH -, C3 - and CH bands show greater detail than on any hitherto described cometary spectrogram. The R-branches of the (0 - 0) and (0 - 1) bands of the blue system of CN have been resolved. The Swings - and Greenstein effects have been discussed for CN (0 - 0). Intensity anomalies observed within the (1 - 0) and (2 - 1) transitions are due to the presence of absorption lines in the exciting solar radiation. Ultraviolet emissions observed in the nuclear regions of Comets 1941 I (CUNNINGHAM) and 1937 II (WILK-PELTIER) appear to coincide with the absorption features of the late N-stars in the same spectral region (λ 3 600-λ 3 850). This gives some evidence in favor of the assignment of the unidentified ultraviolet absorption bands of N-stars and of the unassigned cometary emissions to the same molecule, probably a polyatomic compound. Coincidences of a less striking nature are found between the MERRILL-SANFORD bands of N-stars and unidentified cometary emissions in the region λ 4 200-λ 5 200. [less ▲]

La question de l'identification de la molécule responsable pour l'émission du « groupe 4 050 » dans les comètes et les sources terrestres et pour l'absorption de ce groupe dans les atmosphères des étoiles carbonées du type N avancé est examinée en détail. Les relations entre l'émission et l'absorption de ce groupe et les phénomènes observés dans les décharges, flammes et explosions ainsi qu'en pyrolyse et photolyse sont discutées. L'attention est attirée en particulier sur le fait que l'émission et l'absorption du « groupe 4 050 » sont toujours liées à la formation de particules de carbone (suie). Des arguments sont présentés en faveur de l'attribution de ce groupe (pour lequel un nouveau schéma vibrationnel est proposé) à la molécule C3. Le rôle possible des particules de carbone dans les atmosphères des étoiles du type N avancé a été discuté. La possibilité a été envisagée d'interpréter la formation des molécules responsables pour l'émission du « groupe 4 050 » dans les comètes par collision de protons d'origine solaire avec les surfaces des glaces organiques des noyaux ou avec des molécules carbonées sublimées qui se trouvent à proximité de ces surfaces. Les raies d'émission de Fe II, [Fe II] et [Ni II] sont restées à peu près les mêmes que précédemment (table 2). Le spectre ultraviolet est comparé à ceux d'étoiles très étendue. Suggestions for further work on the classification of Wolf-Rayet stars are made, especially in relation with the anomalies presented by certain nuclei of planetary nebulae. In the Of-stars, in which the spectra are superpositions of typical observations O-stars and shell lines, remarkable differences occur in the relative intensities of various shell lines. The relations between X-and Of-stars are discussed. The peculiar intensities presented by certain transitions of various atoms in anomalous stars of early type are examined. The physical factors (dilution, fluorescence, departure from black body distribution, chemical composition) affecting the relative intensities of various transitions within one atom, and of various atoms relative to each other, are discussed.
