The ability of amnesic patients to learn new semantic information is a topic of research that has a renewed interest for about 10 years, in particular following Vargha-Khadem’s and collaborators’ (1997) works and the impact of these results both on our understanding of the relations between semantic and episodic memory and, from a clinical point of view, on the way to consider rehabilitation possibilities for these patients. This review aims to present what is known about this topic, by trying to respond to 4 different questions: What are the relations between episodic and semantic memory? Does the study of amnesic patients provide contributive data regarding this debate? Are these patients really able to learn new semantic information and, if so, to what extent? What is the nature of the knowledge that amnesic patients can acquire? [less ▲]

The prescriptive component of stereotypes is defined as a set of beliefs about the characteristics group members should possess. It has mainly been studied regarding gender stereotypes. We believe that the main function of this prescriptive component is to allow dominant group members to maintain subordinate group members in an advantageous position for themselves. To illustrate our proposal, we present several theoretical and empirical papers, showing that the relative status of social groups is a determinant of which characteristics are prescribed to the members of these groups; that subordinates who fail to conform to the prescription are sanctioned; and that dominants prescribe to subordinates characteristics they see as beneficial to their own group. Glick and Fiske's (1996) Ambivalent Sexism Inventory is a measure of hostile sexism (sexist antipathy) and benevolent sexism (a subjectively positive attitude toward women). This paper proposes a French version of this scale, the Echelle de Sexisme Ambivalent (ESA). Three studies on more than 1000 participants established the validity of this new scale. The first one is the application of Rasch's extended model that confirmed the psychometrical qualities of the ESA, for both male and female participants. The second study established the structural and predictive validity in a covariance analysis. This study again showed that both male and female participants displayed the same structural pattern. Next, both discriminant and convergent validity were assessed, by comparison to the Neosexism Scale (Tougas, Brown, Beaton and Joly, 1995) and the Social Dominance Scale (Sidanius and Pratto, 1999). Finally, practical and theoretical implications are discussed. [less ▲]

In this review, the author proposes a synthesis of the biosocial model of personality developed by Cloninger. This model is based on several neurobiological and clinical hypotheses. According to this model, the personality is described by 4 temperaments (novelty seeking, harm avoidance, reward dependence, and persistence) which are independently heritable and related to specific central neurotransmitters, and 3 characters (self-directedness, cooperativeness, and self-transcendence) that mature in adulthood. TCI (Temperament and Character Inventory) is a 226-item self questionnaire developed by Cloninger to assess the 7 dimensions of personality. The relationships between temperaments and neurotransmitters is particularly relevant in research and in clinical practice. From a clinical point of view, the model provides a foundation for integrating diagnosis and treatment planning, including both psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy. This review discuss the advantages and the limitations of this model and proposes some future directions. [less ▲]

The main purpose of this critical overview of current knowledge in the field of the development of timing behavior in young children is to pave the way of future research. Traditional psycho-physiological methods have supplied coherent data on the estimation and perception of duration in children over age six. Only a few unsystematic studies have dealt with early temporal conditioning. To determine whether complex temporal regulations in the adult human are the result of a continuous process, deriving from elementary forms of temportal organization of activity, much more data are needed on infant adaptation to time, as well as on the role of language and capacities for inhibition in the evolution of temporal behavior. Furthermore, studies on the physiological bases of internal timing mechanisms and the ontogenesis of temporal regulation in young animals should help to assess the relative weight of early experience, maturation and cognitive development in the child.
