This paper considers three kinds of methodological problems in the field of territorial dynamics and disparities. First of all, the definition of the concepts of disparity, dynamics and territory; secondly, the choice of spatial analysis levels, temporal limits and indicators and finally research into explanations. These are always very complicated and pratical despite the contribution of the major regional development theories and the new inquiries of regional science in the field of perceptions, networks and actors' roll. Texts, maps and the various documents that we use at school are almost all basically rational and cut off from reality. Before tackling them, it is proposed that we first delve into this "reality" by means of fiction. Verbal expression gaines and written games enable us to explore beforehand the mental representation of pupils and provide us with interesting questions for subsequent research. Two approaches of this type are detailed here in order to propose a discussion of their interest and of their relevance. [less ▲]

To be a University lecturer is not only to contribute to create and to spread a knowledge, but also consists in forming others with this knowledge. Unfortunately, here, empiricism is a king and investigations in educational methods at a university level are rare. Therefore, in this article we attempt to explore the problem where it concerns geography through the four big investigative fieldsod didactics : objectives, contents, methods and techniques of education and appraisal of acquired knowledge and abilities. After having identified the main difficulties met by the teaching of geography in secondary schools, this article proposes tracks for a renewal. Firstly, these tracks deal with objectives : a geographical education for all - that means the ability to understand the spatial dimensions of a problem and this at different scales. Secondly, they are concerned that we whish to focus back on a global geography that attempts to understand territories in their diverse dimensions. Finally, they deal with teaching methods by introducing above all a coherent methodology that embraces the stages of the learning of facts and of spatial "ensembles" and which integrates the scientific approach. Any location decision takes into account many variables and processes. In order to apprehend them, we propose a "simulation game". Indeed, this one presents the great merit of putting the student in a problematic situation and leads him to understand certain attitudes. However, a good finality information, and on the other hand, a fundamental learning. Theoretical knowledge so envisaged will permit a better understanding of the decision process and will improve its efficency. [less ▲]

The cities of the world may look in many different ways but they also present many similarities. The aim of this article is to study these two lendancies and so, to introduce this issue dedicated to "Cities of the World". In this first part, the principal common features in cities located sometimes at the antipodes are analized and a tentative summary concerning three typical aspects of the urban environment is introduced : the differences in the urban landscape, the multitude of functions, the crisis and the problems. In the second part, a comparison is made between five big types of cities (Western Europe, North America, industrialized socialist countries, developing countries and muslim areas). It is based on seven criterios : growth structures, the historical and cultural heritage, spatial structures and plans, transportation means, functions, population and housing, and general tendancies of town planning. This paper constitutes, to our knowledge, the first geographical research on second hand trade. This study attempts to determine and explain the structural, sectoral and spatial characteristics of a new form of trade which will, in all probability, develop in the near future. This work is based on a precise, on-site survey of sales points, logging their principal characteristics, as well as the privileged testimony of 18 specially chosen shopkeepers. Although limited to Liège, this analysis is more a consideration of second-hand trade and its methodological requirements than a case study. [less ▲]

Eight kilometers northeast of the so-called "Grottes de Remmouchamps" and the "Vallon des chantoirs", developed in the Devonian limestones (Frasnian) around the Ardennian massif of the "Fenêtre de Theux" (geological window), a very active karstic complex has given way to the growth of especially scarce forms in our areas. These are cones of soft sediments formed around springs (resurgences), located on the smooth bottom of some valleys. [less ▲]

After specifying to wich areas of the teaching of geography the introduction of microcomputing would be most suited, the article then presents a series of programmes aimed at transforming data from figures into graphs and into elementary thematic maps. Written for a Commodore 64, these programmes "Europe in maps" try not only to help to bring regional disparities to the fore but also to process data and make maps in the best possible way. [less ▲]

Through an international comparative analysis, this article tries to define the tool which the free economic zone constitutes. In the first part of the article, three types of zone are studied in particular : the zones and free ports of developed countries, the transformation free zones of the Third World and the "Enterprise Zones" in the United Kingdom. In each case the research concerned the methods of organisation and the impact the zones have not only on the business but also on the regions or countries. The second part of the article deals with employment zones in Belgium. They are analysed in the same way and their possible impact is tested. [less ▲]
