In response to the request of the Groundwater Service of the Walloon Region, the Commission Wallonne d'Etude et de Protection des Sites Souterrains (CWEPSS) has carried out underground water tracing in the karstic area of Hastière (Province of Namur, Belgium). The CWEPSS has carried on the task with the cooperation of Geologica SA, Gembloux, for the tracing tests and the collaboration of the Université de Liège for several related parameters (stream gauging, water analyzes, spectrofluorimetry, etc.). At Hastière, several karstic Springs resurge from a large and complex limestone syncline; two water supply stations pump water from this syncline for local use. Fluorescent tracers have been injected into three swallowholes. Three different tracers have been used simultaneously - one in each injection site. They have been traced downstream in 9 potential points of reappearance. In a single one-month field-campaign, the origin of 9 streams has been questioned. Despite the low-water levels during this period, some underground streams have covered more than 3,5 km in 8 days. This shows how important is to permanently watch water supplies in karstic areas. The water intake of the Municipality at Anthée proved to be clean, unpolluted. The authors could define the watch-zone and delineate a prioritary watch sub-zone in the geological formation supplying directly the intake. A private camping intake appeared to be supplied by a sinkhole collecting water from a water purifying station and by another sinking stream swallowing sewage water, hence a high pollution and an important sanitary problem. These findings, among others, show how us « the water tracing technique is in detecting sources and in defining watch and protection zones. [less ▲]

Research, on the one hand, confirms the availability of land for additional housing developments, and on the other reveals the consequences of bad urbanization policies (promotion and development of linear housing developments, insufficient control over quarrying activities, etc.). The "new code" introduces new town planning requirements (more detailed zoning analysis taking into account the environmental aspects, creation of protected areas, impact surveys, ground occupancy estimation) and strengthens the prospect of using this methodology further on. The article begins with a comprehensive survey on purchase behaviours in Belgium, afterwards it develops into analysing the spatial distribution of the main Belgian shopping centers of both current and semi-current purchases. It also justifies this classification by comparing the results of each of these two great types of purchases, and takes stock of thirty years'trading alteration. Finally, facing the relative failure of socio-economic planning, the article also defines the foundations of an appropriate urban planning by focusing on three aspects : its main themes, its constraints and its instruments. Town and country planning also involves care of individual "territories" as well as those of groups and societies. After a brief recapitulation of motivations for and objections to taking into account citizen's expectations concerning "territorial" planning this paper illustrates the situation in Wallonia. Three types of planning are illustrated : pure theoretical planning, participatory planning and empathic planning. Finally, the paper underlies the challenges facing public services, education and research wich must be addressed if empathic and effective planning is to be implemented. [less ▲]

First of all, the article specifies the links between agriculture and geography by emphasising both the speculiarities of the agricultural sector and the evolution of the problems concerning the geographical researches dealing with the agricultural sector. Then, it defines the two main investigation areas of the agricultural geography : the analysis of the production distribution / sharing-out and the researches upon the factors and models of localisation. The two cases show how the authors endeavour to get devices that provide them a better understanding of the ever increasing complexity of the agricultural world. [less ▲]

This paper considers three kinds of methodological problems in the field of territorial dynamics and disparities. First of all, the definition of the concepts of disparity, dynamics and territory; secondly, the choice of spatial analysis levels, temporal limits and indicators and finally research into explanations. These are always very complicated and pratical despite the contribution of the major regional development theories and the new inquiries of regional science in the field of perceptions, networks and actors' roll. Texts, maps and the various documents that we use at school are almost all basically rational and cut off from reality. Before tackling them, it is proposed that we first delve into this "reality" by means of fiction. Verbal expression gaines and written games enable us to explore beforehand the mental representation of pupils and provide us with interesting questions for subsequent research. Two approaches of this type are detailed here in order to propose a discussion of their interest and of their relevance. [less ▲]

To be a University lecturer is not only to contribute to create and to spread a knowledge, but also consists in forming others with this knowledge. Unfortunately, here, empiricism is a king and investigations in educational methods at a university level are rare. Therefore, in this article we attempt to explore the problem where it concerns geography through the four big investigative fieldsod didactics : objectives, contents, methods and techniques of education and appraisal of acquired knowledge and abilities. After having identified the main difficulties met by the teaching of geography in secondary schools, this article proposes tracks for a renewal. Firstly, these tracks deal with objectives : a geographical education for all - that means the ability to understand the spatial dimensions of a problem and this at different scales. Secondly, they are concerned that we whish to focus back on a global geography that attempts to understand territories in their diverse dimensions. Finally, they deal with teaching methods by introducing above all a coherent methodology that embraces the stages of the learning of facts and of spatial "ensembles" and which integrates the scientific approach. Any location decision takes into account many variables and processes. In order to apprehend them, we propose a "simulation game". Indeed, this one presents the great merit of putting the student in a problematic situation and leads him to understand certain attitudes. However, a good finality information, and on the other hand, a fundamental learning. Theoretical knowledge so envisaged will permit a better understanding of the decision process and will improve its efficency. [less ▲]

The cities of the world may look in many different ways but they also present many similarities. The aim of this article is to study these two lendancies and so, to introduce this issue dedicated to "Cities of the World". In this first part, the principal common features in cities located sometimes at the antipodes are analized and a tentative summary concerning three typical aspects of the urban environment is introduced : the differences in the urban landscape, the multitude of functions, the crisis and the problems. In the second part, a comparison is made between five big types of cities (Western Europe, North America, industrialized socialist countries, developing countries and muslim areas). It is based on seven criterios : growth structures, the historical and cultural heritage, spatial structures and plans, transportation means, functions, population and housing, and general tendancies of town planning. This paper constitutes, to our knowledge, the first geographical research on second hand trade. This study attempts to determine and explain the structural, sectoral and spatial characteristics of a new form of trade which will, in all probability, develop in the near future. This work is based on a precise, on-site survey of sales points, logging their principal characteristics, as well as the privileged testimony of 18 specially chosen shopkeepers. Although limited to Liège, this analysis is more a consideration of second-hand trade and its methodological requirements than a case study. [less ▲]
