Schiff obtained a value of 4.41 for the specific gravity of cuprous iodide, while a redetermination by the author gives 5.631. The importance of this lies in the fact that cuprous iodide is now seen to be formed from the elements with contraction, whereas Schiff's figure called for twenty-four percent expansion. The presence of lithium, sodium, potassium, magnesium, strontium, calcium and barium chlorides; of potassium bromide; and of sodium and potassium nitrates has no effect upon the color of a layer of water, twenty-six meters thick. Light is absorbed by these solutions but the amount is not strictly proportional to the concentration. It is probable that the absorption is a function of the electrolytic dissociation.
