Quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) is being used to estimate the risk level of pathogens along the food chain and to support management decisions for the reduction of food-safety risks. The degree of credibility that can be attached to risk assessment results depends largely on the quality and quantity of the data, the model structure and the assumptions taken. Quality Assurance (QA) in QMRA is fulfilled when all steps in the QMRA process are technically and scientifically valid, so that it can meet its objectives. An overview of QA methods for QMRA is presented. Whereas sensitivity analysis and scenario analysis are common in QMRA, formal methods for the evaluation of data quality, the critical evaluation of assumptions, structured expert elicitation, the checklist approach, and peer review are rarely applied in QMRA but could largely improve the transparency in the results of QMRAs. The degree of implementation of these methods should be proportionate to the stakes of the risk management questions, and discussed in consultation between risk assessors and risk managers. [less ▲]

Radiographic screening of horses prior to purchase or admission to studbooks has become an important tool for evaluating the osteo-articular status of the animals. Developmental orthopedic disorders (DOD) are the main cause of potential lameness in youngsters. The genetic factor associated with DOD has been established, and specific selection schemes have been developed to diminish the prevalence of lesions. Increasing knowledge of prevalence in different breeds may help in developing specific breeding strategies. This article presents the results of the radiographic screening of 676 stallions presented for sire admission to the Royal Belgian Sports Horse Society (Studbook sBs). On average, two radiographic findings were noted per horse. The prevalence of DOD in this population was 38.9%. A high percentage of horses showed radiographic signs of effusion of the distal interphalangeal joint. An uncommon fragment location at the proximal tubercle of the talus was found in 7 horses. The present paper presents a review and discussion of all the radiographic findings. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

Early pregnancy diagnosis is a useful tool in the management of sheep breeding. In this study different methods for pregnancy diagnosis in sheep, including the assessment of ovine Pregnancy-Associated Glycoproteins (ovPAGs), are briefly discussed. Subsequently, in a field trial the use of transrectal ultrasound is compared with the assessment of the concentration of ovPAGs for early pregnancy diagnosis. At the start of the breeding season in 2002, 192 Texel ewes at 4 different farms were synchronized and afterwards mated or artificially inseminated (AI). At the moment of synchronization (D-14) and at 25 (D25), 35 (D35) and 45 (1345) days after mating/AI, transrectal ultrasound was performed and blood was collected by jugular vein puncture. The ovPAG concentration in the plasma of the ewes was measured by means of a homologous radioimmunoassay (RIA). The specificity of transrectal ultrasound was 85%, and the sensitivity was 92% at D25, 94% at D35 and 95% at D45. The specificity of the homologous RIA was 100%, and the sensitivity was 99% at D25, and 100% at D35 and D45. Higher ovPAG concentrations were detected at D35 and D45 than at D25 (P<0.01). An interesting finding was that within the same breed (Texel), ovPAG concentrations were significantly affected by the farm (P<0.01). In conclusion, determination of ovPAG concentration by means of homologous RIA can be used for early pregnancy diagnosis in sheep and is more reliable than transrectal ultrasound at 25,35 or 45 days of gestation. To regain the SPF status of a contaminated but genetically valuable rabbit breeding unit, embryos from the contaminated does were transferred into SPF recipient females. Embryos were collected on day 3 of gestation by flushing uterine horns. All usable embryos were frozen, part of them were not transferred and kept in liquid nitrogen forming a stock of highly valuable genotypes. Thirty-two stimulated does produced 893 embryos, among which 821 (92%) had an intact zona pellucida and were cryopreserved. From this stock, 478 embryos were thawed, 466 were recovered (97.5%) and 417 were of good quality (87.2%). In 30 does, 10 to 18 embryos were surgically transferred per recipient doe and 24.9% (104/417) of them developed to term after transfer. This corresponds to an average number of 3.47 (104/30) live newborns per recipient. Health screenings performed on sanitized rabbits confirmed the disappearance of pathogenic agents. [less ▲]

This case report describes an infiltrative lipoma in a horse. A slow-growing mass, detected early afterbirth, was present at the caudal aspect of the foreleg (antebrachium) of a 2-year-old gelding. Cytological fea-tures were that of a benign lipoma. Surgical resection was attempted but failed due to the infiltrative natureof the mass. Consequently, the horse was euthanized. Histopathology revealed an infiltrative lipoma. Thistumor is histologically benign but surgical resection is usually impossible due to its infiltrative nature. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

The first part of this paper deals with a review of factors which influence the efficacy of respiration and with the pulmonary function tests in animals. The second part describes the pecularities of the bovine pulmonary function in order to: (A) better understand their higher sensitivity to respiratory diseases, (B) select these animals for higher performance of their aerobic metabolism and (C) adapt the prevention of respiratory diseases on basis of their physiological pecularities.
