The author continues here an electronic dialogue with Manuel Abreu, initiated on the occasion of two scientific events (Centenary of the French Psychological Society [2001] and an Homage to Paul Fraisse in the frame of a meeting of the Association of French Language Scientific Psychology [2002]) and a parallel drawn between the careers of Paul Fraisse and Joseph Nuttin. The author discusses various lines of rupture that keep impeding any unification in psychology, any conciliation between basic research and applications, between the search for general laws and the individual approach to the subject, between cognitivist reductionism and concern with pluridimensional integration of the person. Are we to put up with such incompatibilities , as derived from two distinct epistemologies, or look beyond for complementarities? The later seems to have been Manuel Abreu's choice in his research and his teaching. The debat is still open. [less ▲]
