Africa Rice Center (WARDA) facilitated the development and translation of 11 rice videos. From 2005 to 2009, WARDA partners translated them into more than 30 African languages. Open-air video presentations enhanced learning, experimentation, confidence, trust, and group cohesion among rural people. The videos strengthened capacities of more than 500 organisations and hundreds of thousands of farmers. WARDA’s integrated rural learning approach also helped women to access new markets and credit. Learning videos allow for unsupervised learning; unleash local creativity and experimentation; facilitate institutional innovations; and improve social inclusion of the poor, youth, and women. Les activités de commerce équitable dans le Sud sont en général étudiées par rapport aux buts internes des organisations de commerce équitable elles-mêmes. Cet article soutient qu’il est également essentiel de prendre en compte l’“arène” ou ensemble d’interactions plus générales de commerce équitable. Les auteurs se concentrent sur les “arènes” du café commerce équitable de la Tanzanie et du Nicaragua et étudient le rôle de quatre acteurs clés : les petits producteurs, les coopératives, les partenaires de développement et les autorités publiques. En utilisant des données comparatives issues d’études sur le terrain menées en 2002 et 2003, cet article fait ressortir des questions clés nationales et internationales qui affectent les producteurs locaux. Illustrant l’évolution différente du commerce équitable selon le contexte, cet article examine la manière dont le mouvement des coopératives au Nicaragua a été consolidé par la production du commerce équitable, à la différence de la situation en Tanzanie. Il conclut en se penchant sur certains des défis auxquels se confronte le commerce équitable, y compris comment concilier les exigences du marché et le renforcement de la solidarité. [less ▲]

This article identifies the need for an appropriate methodology for evaluating Fair Trade, given that most evaluations to date have been in-house or commissioned reviews and hence have not followed a consistent approach. Focusing on the development aspects of Fair Trade, the article reviews a range of impact evaluation methods and presents a detailed methodology for analyzing Fair Trade. This methodology incorporates standard project evaluation criteria and is based on a wide range of proven methods for collecting and analysing data, principally qualitative but also quantitative. This framework is a modular package from which practitioners may select according to their needs and means, while still retaining an overarching logic. The article illustrates its use by reference to evaluations undertaken in Costa Rica, Ghana, Nicaragua, and Tanzania. The approach allows for a comprehensive understanding of Fair Trade programmes and enables these to be compared with conventional development projects. [less ▲]
