In half the cases, bipolar disorder begins before adulthood. The usual long delay between its onset and the establishment of proper treatment has adverse effects on the developing brain. The prognosis of the disease could be improved by early diagnosis and treatment. From the case of a manic episode in a 16 year old teenager, we discuss the characteristics of manic prodromes, their diagnostic criteria and therapeutic means. We then criticize the concept of diagnosis in the stage of prodromal symptoms. We propose to dispense with the need for diagnosis and promote access to mental health care to any person with mental suffering. [less ▲]

Despite its high frequency, psychotic syndrome in childhood is little understood and is often diagnosed only after several years of development, and this during a time when the child’s psychosocial future is at stake. Negative symptoms are systematically present at the prodromal phase and are the most stable thereafter. It is therefore essential to furnish clinicians with precise semiological markers to recognize it. This paper presents a dimensional semiology of the negative symptoms for use in anamnesis and in clinical observation of the child. Is also gives a guide to the interviewing process. [less ▲]

The overall aim of this study is to assess the impact of political violence on behavioral problems, anxiety, and depression among 130 Palestinian children and adolescents (age= 9 to 16) living in Gaza Strip. The adolescents were assessed by Beck Depression and Reynold's Anxiety Scale, and the children by Rutter's Behavioral Problems Scale. Around 20% of the adolescents suffer from anxiety and/or depression and nearly 90% of children present various kinds of behavioral problems and neurotic symptoms. The adolescents more exposed to traumatic events are the most anxious and depressed. The educational level of mother (for children) and the financial incomes of the family (for both children and adolescents) are positive factors. On the other hand, gender and exposure duration to traumatizing events show no significant links with anxiety, depression and behavioral problems. [less ▲]
