Researches currently lead by experts of agriculture can be brought together in three fields: the globalization of agriculture and food and their impacts on food-processing systems, feeding the planet tomorrow and developing an agriculture which could face climatic, energetic and environmental stakes. Those three problematics cannot leave geographers cold, especially since those three fields show strong regional variations. So everything speaks in favour of geographers’ reinvestment in the field of agriculture’s geography, which has been widely neglected these last years. [less ▲]

The object of this article is to measure the recent evolution of the urban space in Belgium, to show the regional diversity of the process and to seek its main mechanisms. It is based on the cadastral on a communal scale. As one could reasonably expect, the Belgian urban space has progressed since 1980, yet at a slower rhythm than during the years 1959-1970. Housing is its main component with over a half of the entire land-use. What growth rate concerns, services (and especially offices) are in the second place while industry ranks to the third position. Regional contrasts generally sharpened. Considering that urbanisation reflects the regional or local dynamism very distinctly, higher values spread out not only in places of suburbanisation and rurbanisation, but also in the developing regions. For forty years, a third of the farming area has been regrouped in Wallonia. The paper draws the development of land consolidation and underlines the increase of non agricultural aims, especially environment concerns. So land consolidations with stark productivity concerns in the sixties changed to a new way of land consolidation respectful of the inherited balances and concerned with the functional diversification of the rural areas. However the distribution of land consolidation projects still shows stark productivity concerns : land consolidation projects remain first in ploughed land areas with large farming. [less ▲]

This paper presents a satellite map of Belgium, created by assembling several SPOT images recorded in 1992. Data and process required to build the map are described and a significant part of the paper is devoted to the interpretation of the image. A couple of map extracts at enlarged scale, covering the Polders and Famenne-Ardenne regions, show the full interpretation possibilities provided by satellite imagery. [less ▲]

The recent economic growth of many big cities has led to the new concept of "metropolization" and to numerous research based on new models of urban growth. In trying to draw up on this theme, one has tackled successively four points: the concepts of metropolis and metropolization, the metropolization process, the metropolization and the city systems, the metropolization in Europe and Belgium.
