Many interlocking factors play a role in the construction of the image of a people as seen by others, and the judgment passed on the film production of a country is one of them. This article is devoted to the perception of French cinema in French-speaking Belgium – once a ready and important outlet for it – in the immediate postwar period. At the time, French cinema suffered a relative loss of interest, in parallel to the deep crisis then affecting the broader image of France in francophone Belgium. Contemporary critics particularly emphasized three issues : « intellectualism » rather than emotion, immorality, and a very pessimistic outlook. In their eyes, French cinema was betraying two of its main assets : social depiction and healthy entertainment. Jacques Tati’s success showed by contrast what critics in Wallonia and Brussels expected : for them the true French cinema was to be found in comedies revolving around the family and extolling simple and provincial pleasures. That cinema conveyed the image of an everlasting, idealized, and timeless France so difficult to glimpse in those hard times. [less ▲]
