Originaire d’Asie Mineure, Irénée est un témoin de la situation de plurilinguisme dans l’Imperium Romanum du IIe s. apr. J.-C. Comme beaucoup de ses contemporains, il est venu à Rome, ville cosmopolite au centre de l’Empire. Plutôt que de retourner dans sa patrie natale, il a poursuivi sa route vers l’Occident pour se fixer en Gaule, à Lyon, dont il deviendra évêque. Irénée a donc connu plusieurs situations linguistiques. Il se meut d’abord au sein de l’Empire romain, où deux langues coexistent, le latin et le grec, qui atteignent, durant le IIe s., un point d’équilibre, dont témoignent certaines œuvres, comme les Nuits Attiques d’Aulu-Gelle. Ensuite, l’Asie Mineure, d’où est parti Irénée, se caractérise par une grande diversité linguistique et par une survivance des parlers locaux. Le christianisme s’est appuyé sur ces langues locales, persistantes dans les campagnes, tandis que les villes, hellénisées, restaient des foyers du paganisme. Enfin, en Gaule, la question est de savoir dans quelle mesure la langue des Gaulois a persisté et a pu être connue d’Irénée. A ce sujet, un passage de la préface de l’Adversus haereses (Οὐκ ἐπιτητήεις δὲ παρ᾿ἡμῶν, τῶν ἐν Κελτοῖς διατριβόντων καὶ περὶ βάρβαρον διάλεκτον τὸ πλεῖστον ἀσχολουμένων… « Tu n’exigeras de nous, qui vivons chez les Celtes et qui, la plupart du temps, traitons nos affaires en dialecte barbare… ») mérite d’être analysé. C’est probablement le latin qu’il faut voir dernière l’expression « dialecte barbare ». [less ▲]

Earthworms are known to play integral roles in soils, and are often referred to as vital soil and ecosystem engineers. They have the ability to influence a wide range of chemical, physical, and biological properties of soil environment. In the present study, earthworm and soil samples were collected from wheat cultivated fields in Gembloux, Belgium under four agricultural practices: (1) conventional tillage with crop residues incorporated into the soil (CT/IN); (2) conventional tillage with crop residues exported from the field (CT/OUT); (3) reduced tillage with crop residues incorporated into the soil (RT/IN); and (4) reduced tillage with crop residues exported from the field (RT/OUT). The different agricultural practices were applied on luvisol soil for four consecutive years prior to the initiation of the current study. The purpose of this study was to research the influence of agricultural practices on earthworms with considering species and their interactions with soil properties. Results indicated that agricultural practices affected soil properties and earthworm communities. For each depth, measures of soil physico-chemical properties showed significant differences among treatments. The penetration resistance (PR) measured to a depth of 50 cm increased with increasing soil depth in all treatments. PR was significantly higher in RT compared with CT. Soil moisture was measured before PR determination. Soil samples showed higher P and K concentrations in 0 – 10 cm depth compared with other depths. The main reason for the large K and P accumulation near the soil surface is the incorporation of crop residues. Significant differences were not detected between residue incorporation depth treatments, where results showed mean earthworm abundance was respectively 182 and 180 individuals m-2 in CT and RT. Mean earthworm biomass was similarly not significantly different between CT and RT, where results were respectively 48.5 and 57.3 g.m-2. However, a significant difference was observed between IN and OUT treatments, suggesting the exportation of crop residues will limit earthworm abundance and biomass, and will mask the effect of tillage. The endogeic species Apporectodea caliginosa strongly dominated the earthworm community (64%), whereas epigeic and anecic species remained < 3% and 5% of all earthworms. Findings indicate that endogeic and epi-anecic groups appears to be highly affected by tillage practice and the exportation of crop residues. Consequently, it seems that the effect of residue exportation was stronger than tillage effect. In compacted soils, L. terrestris, L. castaneus and A. caliginosa species showed an increased abundance. The obtained results were attributable to earthworm activity and crop residues, suggesting earthworms contributed to nutrient dynamics and soil structure, particularly at increased soil depths. Overall, the results emphasise the influence of crop residues exportation on earthworm community and also, the important influence of earthworm activity on soil physico-chemical properties change, processes which are closely linked. BACKGROUND: Single cell biology has attracted a lot of attention these past few years and has led to numerous fundamental results pointing out the heterogeneity of clonal cell populations. In this context, microbial phenotypic heterogeneity under bioprocessing conditions needs to be further investigated. In this study, yeast based processes have been investigated by using on-line flow cytometry in combination with a fluorescent transcriptional reporter (GFP) and viability fluorescence tags (propidium iodide, PI). Methods aiming at expressing the dispersion of these fluorescence tags among the yeast populations have been investigated for different bioreactor operating conditions. RESULTS: Yeast viability was determined on the basis of PI uptake. Segregation between PI negative and positive subpopulations could be efficiently quantified on the basis of the mean-to-median ratio or the amplitude of the interquartile range. On the other hand, the same quantification could not be made for the segregation occurring at the level of GFP synthesis. Indeed, when cells were exposed to sub-lethal or mild stresses (such as in scale-down reactors) two GFP subpopulations could be visualized by real-time FC, but quantification by one of the above-mentioned methods was not possible. CONCLUSIONS: Yeast population heterogeneity was observed in representative bioreactor operating conditions. Difficulties for the determination of segregation at the level of GFP synthesis point out the fact that one needs to understand the segregation mechanisms for the applied fluorescent reporters, to judge whether simple mathematical tools may be applied or if more sophisticated computational tools are needed for the quantification of the microbial population segregation. A systematic study on the presence of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) in the Río Negro Estuary (RNE), Patagonia Argentina, was carried out between the months March – July from 2008 to 2011. Data on the dolphin’s activity patterns were gathered via an Ad Libitum focal group sampling mode accompanying dorsal fin images taken for identification and re-identification of individuals. A total effort of 188 h resulted in 58 h of positive observation of 124 dolphin groups (sightings per unit effort (SPUE) = 0.66 groups/h). Data analysis showed two main activity states for the observed groups, travelling (65%) and foraging (26%). The remaining 9% of the groups were involved in other activity states. The photo-identification effort, which started opportunistically in 2006, resulted in a catalogue of 21 individual dolphins, with a total mean re-identification rate of 9 days (max = 24 days). When comparing these pictures to the existing catalogue of Bahía San Antonio (approximately 200 km west from the study area) dorsal fins of 20 individuals could be positively matched and most (n = 17) could be subsequently re-identified in both areas, indicating their long distance movements along the North Patagonian coast during the austral autumn months. This season coincides with the lowest amount of feeding activity observed in Bahía San Antonio. This study suggests that bottlenose dolphins enter RNE, mainly during autumn, to forage. It appears that the search for food resources may be the trigger for their movement patterns along the North Patagonian coast during this season, at least for certain individuals. More research is needed to accurately confirm this hypothesis. [less ▲]
