This paper proposes a new pixel-based background subtraction technique, applicable to range images, to detect motion. Our method exploits the physical meaning of depth information, which leads to an improved background/foreground segmentation and the instantaneous suppression of ghosts that would appear on color images. In particular, our technique considers certain characteristics of depth measurements, such as failures for certain pixels or the non-uniformity of the spatial distribution of noise in range images, to build an improved pixel-based background model. Experiments show that incorporating specificities related to depth measurements allows us to propose a method whose performance is increased with respect to other state-of-the-art methods. [less ▲]

Diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) is a promising extension of diffusion tensor imaging, giving new insights into the white matter microstructure and providing new biomarkers. Given the rapidly increasing number of studies, DKI has a potential to establish itself as a valuable tool in brain diagnostics. However, to become a routine procedure, DKI still needs to be improved in terms of robustness, reliability, and reproducibility. As it requires acquisitions at higher diffusion31 weightings, results are more affected by noise than in diffusion tensor imaging. The lack of standard procedures for post-processing, especially for noise correction, might become a significant obstacle for the use of DKI in clinical routine limiting its application. We considered two noise correction schemes accounting for the noise properties of multichannel phased-array coils, in order to improve the data quality at signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) typical for DKI. The SNR dependence of estimated DKI metrics such as mean kurtosis (MK), mean diffusivity (MD) and fractional anisotropy (FA) is investigated for these noise correction approaches in Monte Carlo simulations and in in vivo human studies. The intra-subject reproducibility is investigated in a single subject study by varying the SNR level and SNR spatial distribution. Then the impact of the noise correction on inter-subject variability is evaluated in a homogeneous sample of 25 healthy volunteers. Results show a strong impact of noise correction on the MK estimate, while the estimation of FA and MD was affected to a lesser extent. Both intra- and inter-subject SNR related variability of the MK estimate is considerably reduced after correction for the noise bias, providing more accurate and reproducible measures. In this work, we have proposed a straightforward method that improves accuracy of DKI metrics. This should contribute to standardization of DKI applications in clinical studies and making valuable inferences in group analysis and longitudinal studies. [less ▲]

Faced with the inevitable depletion of fossil resources, agricultural productions have rapidly emerged as promising renewable alternatives. Particularly, the conversion of lignocellulosic materials has nowadays opened new vistas for the production of energy, biofuels and chemicals. In this literature review, microwave technology is described as an original heating source either for the thermochemical conversions (at temperatures up to 400°C) of lignocellulose into biofuels or the pretreatment (below 400°C) and further hydrolysis of lignocellulose into bioethanol and other valuable chemicals. Advantages of microwave approaches include a commonly observed acceleration in reaction rate and improved selectivities and yields. [less ▲]

Poly( N -vinylcaprolactam) (PNVCL) is a thermoresponsive and biocompatible polymer that raises an increasing interest in the biomedical area, especially in drug delivery systems (DDS) that include micelles, hydrogels, and hybrid particles. The thermoresponsiveness of PNVCL, used alone or in combination with other stimuli- responsive polymers or particles (pH, magnetic fi eld, or chemicals), is often key in the loading and/or release process in these DDS. The renewed focus on this polymer, which is known for decades, is to a large extent due to recent progress in synthetic strategies. Especially, the advent of efficient controlled radical polymerization (CRP) methods for NVCL monomer gives now access to unprecedented well-defi ned NVCL-based copolymers with unique properties. Au cœur de l'espace de la cour, le confesseur du Prince présente un profil singulier. La relation qu'il entretient avec son pénitent est unique : tenu à l'obéissance envers le souverain ou son représentant pour les aspects temporels, ce religieux a la faculté unique d'examiner, de conseiller et de juger la spiritualité du premier personnage de l'État. Attaché à la personne du Prince, les relations de cet ecclésiastique avec les autres courtisans ne peuvent être appréhendées au moyen d'une grille de lecture hiérarchisant les rapports sociaux : échappant à l'organisation laïque – mais pas protocolaire – de la cour et ne dépendant pas directement de la Chapelle royale, le confesseur bénéficie d'une autonomie relative. En outre, son pouvoir politique, en partie officiel grâce aux dignités et charges dont ce religieux est pourvu, est avant tout perçu comme une magistrature d'influence à la portée difficilement mesurable. Enfin, les obligations matérielles liées à l'appartenance de ce prélat à un ordre religieux achèvent de distinguer cet ecclésiastique des autres serviteurs princiers. Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) and its metabolite, adenosine, are key regulators of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs) functions. PMNs have recently been implicated in the initiation of thrombosis. We investigated the role of ATP and adenosine in PMN activation and recruitment at the site of endothelial injury. Following binding to the injured vessel wall, PMNs are activated and release elastase. The recruitment of PMNs and the subsequent fibrin generation and thrombus formation are strongly affected in mice deficient in the P2X1-ATP receptor and in wild-type mice treated with CGS 21680, an agonist of the A2A adenosine receptor or NF449 a P2X1 antagonist. Infusion of wild-type PMNs into P2X1-deficient mice increases fibrin generation but not thrombus formation. Restoration of thrombosis requires infusion of both platelets and PMNs from wild-type mice. In vitro, ATP activates PMNs, whereas CGS 21680 prevents their binding to activated endothelial cells. These data indicate that ATP contributes to PMN activation leading to their adhesion at the site of laser-induced endothelial injury, a necessary step leading to the generation of fibrin and subsequent platelet-dependent thrombus formation. Altogether, our study identifies previously unknown mechanisms by which ATP and adenosine are key molecules involved in thrombosis by regulating the activation state of PMNs. [less ▲]

Les origines savantes ou populaires des épopées françaises médiévales ont longtemps fait débat. Il s'avère que ces textes contiennent un très grand nombre de références à des personnages issus de l’Antiquité qui témoignent d’une formation scolaire chez les auteurs des chansons. Sur la base d'un examen de l'ensemble du corpus, cette étude s'intéresse plus particulièrement aux mentions explicites faites à des auteurs antiques, qu'ils soient grecs (Homère, Aristote, Platon) ou latins (Virgile, Ovide, César, Caton, Sénèque). En tenant de déterminer les traditions qui ont pu nourrir l'inspiration des auteurs des chansons de geste, elle s'emploie à définir les situations dans lesquelles les références en question apparaissent, et s’interroge sur les finalités que poursuivent les poètes à travers l’évocation des auteurs antiques, dont certains, comme César ou Virgile, sont davantage restés dans les mémoires pour des éléments réels ou imaginaires de leur vie plutôt que pour leur œuvre. In item response theory, the classical estimators of ability are highly sensitive to response disturbances and can return strongly biased estimates of the true underlying ability level. Robust methods were introduced to lessen the impact of such aberrant responses onto the estimation process. The computation of asymptotic (i.e., large sample) standard errors (ASE) for these robust estimators, however, has not been fully considered yet. This paper focuses on a broad class of robust ability estimators, defined by an appropriate selection of the weight function and the residual measure, for which the ASE is derived from the theory of estimating equations. The maximum likelihood (ML) and the robust estimators, together with their estimated ASE, are then compared through a simulation study. It is concluded that both the estimators and their ASE perform similarly in absence of response disturbances, while the robust estimator and its estimated ASE are less biased and outperform their ML counterparts in presence of response disturbances with large impact on the item response process. Freeplay in aircraft control surface actuators is a common source of nonlinearity that can cause undesirable aeroelastic phenomena and, as a consequence, certification authorities place strict limits on the size of the deadband gaps of actuators. In recent years many authors have worked on determining the effects of freeplay on the dynamic behavior of aeroelastic systems; these efforts have yielded significant improvements in the understanding of the phenomena, but have concentrated on simple models. Investigations of industry-relevant aeroelastic models of complete aircraft with freeplay in the actuators have been much rarer, the main difficulty being the selection of an appropriate modal basis that can represent the full range of possible dynamic phenomena. This work presents a novel implementation of the residual vectors approach to create consistent and numerically stable reduced order models suitable for industrial-standard aeroelastic models of aircraft. The methodology relies on the piecewise linear nature of freeplay to create a single reduction basis that represents the dynamics of the system both inside and outside the freeplay deadband gap. The method is demonstrated on an Embraer generic test bench aircraft, showing that the resulting reduced order model is efficient and effective. Nonlinear analysis is carried out using equivalent linearization as well as time integrations of the full nonlinear system. It is shown that, while equivalent linearization is an indispensable tool for a preliminary mapping of the main aeroelastic instabilities, the time integration-based nonlinear analysis is an essential complementary tool to confirm the characteristics of the system behavior.
