[less ▲]

Freeplay in aircraft control surface actuators is a common source of nonlinearity that can cause undesirable aeroelastic phenomena and, as a consequence, certification authorities place strict limits on the size of the deadband gaps of actuators. In recent years many authors have worked on determining the effects of freeplay on the dynamic behavior of aeroelastic systems; these efforts have yielded significant improvements in the understanding of the phenomena, but have concentrated on simple models. Investigations of industry-relevant aeroelastic models of complete aircraft with freeplay in the actuators have been much rarer, the main difficulty being the selection of an appropriate modal basis that can represent the full range of possible dynamic phenomena. This work presents a novel implementation of the residual vectors approach to create consistent and numerically stable reduced order models suitable for industrial-standard aeroelastic models of aircraft. The methodology relies on the piecewise linear nature of freeplay to create a single reduction basis that represents the dynamics of the system both inside and outside the freeplay deadband gap. The method is demonstrated on an Embraer generic test bench aircraft, showing that the resulting reduced order model is efficient and effective. Nonlinear analysis is carried out using equivalent linearization as well as time integrations of the full nonlinear system. It is shown that, while equivalent linearization is an indispensable tool for a preliminary mapping of the main aeroelastic instabilities, the time integration-based nonlinear analysis is an essential complementary tool to confirm the characteristics of the system behavior. [less ▲]

Simulating a power system with both transmission and distribution networks modeled in detail is a huge computational challenge. In this paper, a Schur-complement-based domain decomposition algorithm is proposed to provide accurate, detailed dynamic simulations of such systems. The simulation procedure is accelerated with the use of parallel programming techniques, taking advantage of the parallelization opportunities inherent to domain decomposition algorithms. The proposed algorithm is general, portable and scalable on inexpensive, shared-memory, multi-core machines. A large-scale test system is used for its performance evaluation. [less ▲]

Myeloperoxidase (MPO) is a pro-oxidant enzyme associated with decreased motility in thawed equine semen. This study aimed to describe MPO concentration, activity and subunits in raw and thawed semen and to correlate these data with motilities in raw and thawed semen. Semen samples from five stallions were collected four times. Motilities were assessed in raw and thawed semen. MPO assays were performed in raw seminal plasma, raw sperm-rich pellet and thawed semen. Total and active MPO concentrations were, respectively, assayed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and specific immunological extraction followed by enzymatic detection. MPO subunits present in semen were characterized by Western 3 blot. Purified active MPO was added in PBS and freezing extender to control its activity during freezing procedure. Differences between medians were determined using Kruskal– Wallis test, and correlations were determined using Spearman’s test for nonparametric data. Active MPO concentration was low in seminal plasma and thawed semen, but high in pellet (p = 0.0058), as the opposite relation was observed for total MPO concentration (p < 0.0001). In seminal plasma and post- thaw semen, inactive 86-kDa MPO precursor was mainly observed. Purified MPO activity was decreased in the extender (p = 0.0286). MPO activity in pellet was highly correlated with thawed progressive motility (r = 􏰑0.5576, p = 0.0086). Inac- tive MPO precursor and unknown low molecular weight inactive MPO precursor subunits explain low MPO activity in semen. Major MPO activity was observed in pellet, and post- thaw loss of activity is partially explained by MPO inactiva- tion in extender. Thawed semen motility was negatively correlated with MPO activity in pellet, becoming a potential freezability predictor. [less ▲]

Iñigo de Brizuela and Andrés de Soto, both confessors of the Archdukes were key figures at Brussels' court. Each of them used to influence the policy, using different bias. But they weren't trying to reach similar goals: Brizuela carefully acted to preserve Spanish interests in the Catholic Netherlands, while de Soto struggled for a Catholic victory. Their political actions and its reasons will be covered by this paper. [less ▲]

Promoting affiliation between scientists is relatively easy, but creating larger organisational structures is more difficult, due to traditions of scientific independance, difficulties of sharing implicit knowledge, and formal organisational barrers. Hence there is a need to research possibilities given by Communities of practice. This paper presents a research projet (doctoral thesis) whose goal is to implement Communities of Practice (CoP) in order to sustain knowledge transfer in regulatory analytical sciences. [less ▲]

Pneumocystis fungi represent a highly diversified biological group with numerous species, which display a strong host-specificity suggesting a long co-speciation process. In the present study, the presence and genetic diversity of Pneumocystis organisms was investigated in 203 lung samples from woodmice (Apodemus sylvaticus) collected on western continental Europe and Mediterranean islands. The presence of Pneumocystis DNA was assessed by nested PCR at both large and small mitochondrial subunit (mtLSU and mtSSU) rRNA loci. Direct sequencing of nested PCR products demonstrated a very high variability among woodmouse-derived Pneumocystis organisms with a total number of 30 distinct combined mtLSU and mtSSU sequence types. However, the genetic divergence among these sequence types was very low (up to 3.87%) and the presence of several Pneumocystis species within Apodemus sylvaticus was considered unlikely. The analysis of the genetic structure of woodmouse-derived Pneumocystis revealed two distinct groups. The first one comprised Pneumocystis from woodmice collected in continental Spain, France and Balearic islands. The second one included Pneumocystis from woodmice collected in continental Italy, Corsica and Sicily. These two genetic groups were in accordance with the two lineages currently described within the host species Apodemus sylvaticus. Pneumocystis organisms are emerging as powerful tools for phylogeographic studies in mammals [less ▲]
