Iñigo de Brizuela and Andrés de Soto, both confessors of the Archdukes were key figures at Brussels' court. Each of them used to influence the policy, using different bias. But they weren't trying to reach similar goals: Brizuela carefully acted to preserve Spanish interests in the Catholic Netherlands, while de Soto struggled for a Catholic victory. Their political actions and its reasons will be covered by this paper. [less ▲]

Objective: The objective of this paper is to propose, starting from the description of a clinical emblematic case, a theoretical synthesis of the work of phenomenological psychopathology dedicated to melancholia and typus melancholicus (TM), a clinical concept that describes the premorbid personality vulnerable to major depression (“melancholia” for the psychopathological tradition). Method: This is phenomenological analysis of a case study of melancolia, of its premorbid personality and pathogenic triggering situation. We adopt two main phenomenological keys to understanding the develpment of melancholia : role-identity theory and desynchronization theory. The former understands melancholia as a disorder of identity triggered by the loss of the social role with which one has previously over-identifed. The latter sees melancholia as the effect of the desynchronisation from the social environment that further develops into an inhibition of the conative–affective dynamics of life. We present the case of Jonas (64 years old), whose mother (94 years old) recently died. Before his mother’s death, Jonas’ life was entirely orchestrated by the caring for his mother and synchronized in time with this (e.g., he used to go to her house every 4 hours, took all his meals with her, etc.). Jonas, in addition to being hyper-synchronized and hyper-syntonic, fulfills all diagnostic criteria for TM, including “orderliness”, “conscientiousness”, “hyper/heteronomia” and “intolerance of ambiguity”. TM’s attach a disproportioned importance to their social roles (or external representations of identity) at the expense of their own ego-identity. Results: The passage from pre-morbid personality to melancholia is triggered by the death of Jonas’ mother that entails a profound depersonalization. Desynchronization and role loss cause Jonas fall into this severe depersonalization, whose core feature is the feeling of the loss of feeling. Conclusions: This original contribution demonstrates a clinical case can contribute to the construction and refinement of theoretical and conceptual frameworks (like princeps Tellenbach's studies). Over-synchronized tempo and over-identification with social role are emblematically in this case the two sides of the same coin. A parallelism can be established between synchronization (with the mother) and respect for the role at the expense of own identity. The clinical case of Jonas highlights a conceptual bridge between the model of melancholia as loss of social role and the model of melancholia as desynchronization. [less ▲]

INTRODUCTION: Jumper's knee is a frequent chronic overuse syndrome of the upper part of the patellar tendon. Platelets contain lots of growth factors which could enhance the healing process of tendons. METHODS: Twenty patients with chronic upper patellar tendinopathy were enrolled. Assessments were made before infiltration of PRP, and 6 weeks and 3 months after the infiltration, using a 10--point Visual Analogic Scale, clinical examinations with a pressure algometer, algofunctional scores (IKDC and VISA--P), functional assessments (isokinetic and optojump evaluations) and imagery (ultrasounds and MRI). The PRP was obtained with an apheresis system (COM.TEC, Fresenius). Six millilitres of PRP were injected without local anaesthetic. One week after infiltration, patients started a standardised sub--maximal eccentric reeducation. RESULTS: Pain during daily activities significantly decreased with time. During functional evaluation, it decreased as well, but without significant functional improvement. No improvements in the imagery measurements were observed. Younger patients seemed to be more susceptible to have an improvement of pain by the PRP infiltration. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates that a local infiltration of PRP associated with a submaximal eccentric protocol can improve symptoms of chronic jumper's knee in patients non--responsive to classical conservative treatments. A selective and sensitive electroanalytical method was developed for arsenic determination based on a nanogold (AuNP) modified solid carbon paste work- ing electrode (SCPE) modified in two steps (i) physisorp- tion and (ii) additional electrodeposition of nanogold par- ticles in the presence of iodide. Copper(II) interference was solved by covering the gold layer by a self assembled mono layer (SAM) of glutathione. Using DPASV a linear response of the signal was obtained as a function of As(III) in the concentration range 0.05–20mM (4– 1498 ppb) with a limit of detection of 0.01 mM (0.9 ppb). Sample stirring and degassing were not needed. Applica- tion to the determination of arsenic(III) and (V) in un- derground water samples from Burkina Faso was success- fully achieved. [less ▲]

Diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) is a promising extension of diffusion tensor imaging, giving new insights into the white matter microstructure and providing new biomarkers. Given the rapidly increasing number of studies, DKI has a potential to establish itself as a valuable tool in brain diagnostics. However, to become a routine procedure, DKI still needs to be improved in terms of robustness, reliability, and reproducibility. As it requires acquisitions at higher diffusion31 weightings, results are more affected by noise than in diffusion tensor imaging. The lack of standard procedures for post-processing, especially for noise correction, might become a significant obstacle for the use of DKI in clinical routine limiting its application. We considered two noise correction schemes accounting for the noise properties of multichannel phased-array coils, in order to improve the data quality at signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) typical for DKI. The SNR dependence of estimated DKI metrics such as mean kurtosis (MK), mean diffusivity (MD) and fractional anisotropy (FA) is investigated for these noise correction approaches in Monte Carlo simulations and in in vivo human studies. The intra-subject reproducibility is investigated in a single subject study by varying the SNR level and SNR spatial distribution. Then the impact of the noise correction on inter-subject variability is evaluated in a homogeneous sample of 25 healthy volunteers. Results show a strong impact of noise correction on the MK estimate, while the estimation of FA and MD was affected to a lesser extent. Both intra- and inter-subject SNR related variability of the MK estimate is considerably reduced after correction for the noise bias, providing more accurate and reproducible measures. In this work, we have proposed a straightforward method that improves accuracy of DKI metrics. This should contribute to standardization of DKI applications in clinical studies and making valuable inferences in group analysis and longitudinal studies. [less ▲]

Faced with the inevitable depletion of fossil resources, agricultural productions have rapidly emerged as promising renewable alternatives. Particularly, the conversion of lignocellulosic materials has nowadays opened new vistas for the production of energy, biofuels and chemicals. In this literature review, microwave technology is described as an original heating source either for the thermochemical conversions (at temperatures up to 400°C) of lignocellulose into biofuels or the pretreatment (below 400°C) and further hydrolysis of lignocellulose into bioethanol and other valuable chemicals. Advantages of microwave approaches include a commonly observed acceleration in reaction rate and improved selectivities and yields. [less ▲]

[less ▲]
