EGG QUALITY COMPARISON OF TWO VIETNAMESE CHICKEN BREEDS (RI AND MIA)

In the context of the valorization of poultry biodiversity, this work represents a step toward a better knowledge of the production abilities of local chicken breeds in Vietnam. Local chicken breeds are indeed particularly well suited for low-input rearing systems, as widely practiced in rural households of Vietnam. The socio-economic importance of these breeds might be underpinned by a market valorization through the mounting of differentiated quality value chains. Such a strategy needs the production potential of these local breeds to be assessed using parameters of egg quality and quantity. This study presents data about egg quality traits in two chicken breeds, the Ri and the Mia. The former is the most widespread breed in Vietnam, while the latter is known to be in danger of extinction. Nineteen parameters of quality of ninety eggs of Ri chickens and sixty eggs of Mia chickens were measured, each for both 40 and 60-weeks old hens to take hens ages into account.Mean egg weight of Mia eggs (44.70g) was significantly (p<0.001) higher than that of Ri eggs (41.68g). The yolk to albumen ratio was not significantly different (p>0.05) between the two breeds at the age of 40 weeks (Ri: 0.55; Mia: 0.58). For 60-weeks old hens, the ratio became significantly (p<0.05) higher in Mia eggs compared to Ri eggs (0.64 vs. 0.57). No significant difference (p>0.05) was recorded between the two breeds for parameters used for egg freshness assessment (Haugh’s units and pH of albumen and yolk) or eggshell resistance (maximal breakage force). Despite the small sample available for the study (due to the low availability of Mia hens and eggs), significant differences in egg quality traits were thus observed between these two breeds. Mass spectrometry (MS)-based technology provides label-free localization of molecules in tissue samples. Drugs, proteins, lipids and metabolites can easily be monitored in their environment. Resolution can be achieved down to the cellular level (10–20 mm) for conventional matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) imaging, or even to the subcellular level for more complex technologies such as secondary ionization mass spectrometry (SIMS) imaging. One question remains: are we going to be able to investigate functional relationships between drugs and proteins and compare with localized phenomena? This review describes the various spatial levels of investigation offered by mass spectrometry imaging (MSI), and the advantages and disadvantages compared with other labeling technologies. [less ▲]

Interpellé par le secteur des écoles de devoirs qui dénoncent la pression de plus en plus importante des travaux à domicile sur les enfants, l’Observatoire de l’Enfance, de la Jeunesse et de l’Aide à la Jeunesse a souhaité documenter la question en synthétisant les prises de position de tous les acteurs issus du secteur scolaire et extrascolaire en Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles, mais aussi des représentants des familles et des parents. Et ce, au regard de la Convention internationale relative aux droits de l'enfant. Le rapport de recherche comprend une synthèse des positions actuelles concernant la place des devoirs scolaires dans la vie des enfants de l’enseignement primaire en lien avec les droits de l’enfant. Cette synthèse est assortie d'une série de recommandations. Deux questions transversales guident l’ensemble du projet : - dans quelle mesure les devoirs renforcent-ils encore aujourd’hui les inégalités entre les enfants ? - de quelle manière les devoirs interfèrent-ils dans la conciliation des temps scolaire, familial et personnel des enfants (en lien avec les droits au repos et aux loisirs) ? A two-level adaptive load shedding scheme against voltage instability is proposed, adjusting its actions to the severity of the situation. The lower level includes a set of distributed controllers which curtail loads once the voltages at monitored transmission buses fall and stay for some time below threshold values. The adaptive nature of the proposed scheme comes from the upper level adjusting those thresholds in real-time. At the time instant the upper level detects that the system enters an emergency condition, it sends a signal to the lower-level controllers requesting them to take their currently measured voltages as threshold values. The upper-level emergency detection can be based on various criteria, the key-point being that it takes advantage of a wide-area monitoring of the system. In particular, the paper illustrates the use of a voltage instability detection scheme based on sensitivity computation. In case the upper level fails sending its signal, the lower-level controllers act in purely distributed mode, each using its preset threshold voltage. The capabilities of the proposed scheme are illustrated on a small but realistic test system. [less ▲]
