The origin of the genitive –aes/-es for –ae is difficult to establish. The most common opinion about this type of genitive, which occurs in epigraphical and, in more reduced proportions, in papyrological sources (not, insofar as I know, in literary texts) especially for women’s personal names (but also in common nouns), is that it comes from the Greek. Beside the influence of Greek, several theories can be found about the origin of this particularity, commonly attested even in Republican Latin names. Indeed, in vulgar Latin, the –es ending genitive (used as dative as well) was frequently used from the 1st c. B.C. This phenomenon can be observed in Rome, in Italy and in the provinces (not only in western provinces, but also in eastern provinces, where the influence of Greek could have been stronger). In the epigraphical texts, this type of genitive occurs frequently in Greek personal names among some social groups (low classes). The origin of the dedicants (native, Greek or Oriental, i.e. Greek-speaking persons) must be taken into account and, for the common nouns, the contextualization is very important. I’ll focus on the inscriptions from Asia Minor and compare them with other regions as Italia X and Pannonia to see : 1° whether –aes/-es are two distinctive phenomena or two variants of the same phenomenon and 2° if this particularity has been used as a typical feature to point out the Greek origin of the person(s) mentioned in the inscription or the bilingual character of the community which has produced the text. Kyrgyzstan is situated in the heart of the Tien Shan. During the last two centuries, several M>7 earthquakes occurred in this country. Therefore, a good knowledge of seismic hazard in this area is essential, not only at regional scale but also at local scale. First, this work presents a detailed analysis of seismic hazard in the Central Tien Shan. Several seismic hazard map have been made but none of them include paleoseismic data. Our maps are based on previous studies of probabilistic seismic hazard of the Kyrgyz Tien Shan (Abdrakhmatov et al., 2003). We integrate in our calculation the palaeoseismicity of the Talas Fergana Fault. It allows us to take into consideration strong earthquakes with high return periods. The final results are presented as maps with different return periods (100, 200, 475, 1000, 2000, 5000 and 10000 years). The outcomes are discussed in comparison with previous results, with GSHAP predictions (Ulomov et al., 1999) and with probabilistic seismic hazard map (Abdrakhmatov et al., 2003). The purpose of the second part of this study is the assessment of local seismic hazard of Tuyuk-Suu and Taldy-Bulak "D" tailings, both located in the Minkush valley. First, seismic wave amplifications are determined by means of spectral ratios of the horizontalto- vertical (H/V) components acquired through ambient noise measurements. Secondly, a dynamic modeling of the two tailings is performed. It is based on peak ground acceleration calculated previously for a return period of 1000 years. The dynamic modeling gives Fourier spectra for several histories. Spectral ratios obtained from dynamic modeling are compared with H/V measurement in order to estimate site effects. [less ▲]

Neutrophils (PMNs) are involved in host defense against infections through the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the release of an oxidant enzyme, myeloperoxidase (MPO), to kill pathologic agents. But, an excessive stimulation of PMNs is associated with development of inflammatory diseases. Neutrophils are prime targets to control inflammatory events and the therapeutic use of polyphenols is proposed to lower oxidative stress. The aim of this work was to study antioxidant effect of NDS27, a water-soluble form of curcumin, on stimulated equine PMNs and human promyelocytic leukemia cells (HL-60) which are less differenciated. 2',7'-Dichlorofluorescin diacetate and lucigenin were used to measure ROS production by activated HL-60 cells or PMNs. NDS27 (10-6 to 10-4 M) was pre-incubated with cells and eliminated before their activation to study its intracellular effects on ROS production. The effect of NDS27 on MPO activity released by the cells was determined by SIEFED. Likewise, the ability of NDS27 to enter into the cells was checked by HPLC on the cellular extracts.NDS27 significantly and dose-dependently inhibited the ROS production in both cell types without affecting their viability. Its intracellular effect showed higher efficiency for PMNs while its interaction with HL-60 cells remained better. The activity of MPO released by PMNs and HL-60 cells was decreased by NDS27 with a more efficient effect for PMNs. Our findings suggest that the greater efficiency of NDS27 in mature PMNs is not due to a better membrane permeability or a better interaction between membrane and NDS27, but rather to an inhibitory effect on the ROS production by the more mature cells, probably by targeting the enzymes implied in respiratory burst like MPO and NADPH oxidase. The modulatory effect of NDS27 towards oxidant activity of cells involved in immune and inflammatory response opens therapeutic perspectives to control pathologies with excessive inflammatory reactions. Convective drying of two different types of wastewater sludges is investigated. Experiments are realised in a micro-dryer, for air temperatures of 80 °C, 140 °C and 200 °C, the velocity and humidity remaining the same. The product drying kinetics presents, for all studied cases, three main phases, which are: adaptation phase, constant drying rate phase and falling drying rate. A comparison between two mathematical approaches allows determination of the diffusion coefficient. The value of this coefficient depends on the origin of the wastewater sludge and the operating temperatures. Physical changes such as shrinkage are introduced into the mathematical model. [less ▲]

This paper presents a linguistic description of the Barcelona Alcestis, an anonymous Latin poem contained in a fourth century papyrus codex. Traces of Vulgar Latin are identified in the orthography, which reveals the language as it was heard, understood and spoken by the copyist, whereas the syntactic features of the text can inform us about the language used by the author in the time of the composition.
