Introduction: The certainty or the doubt, justified or not, a patient has in his knowledge about his illness influences largely his decision to act or, on the contrary, to verify, to ask for help. Nevertheless, in the process of knowledge assessment, in patient education as well as in classical training systems, respondants are too rarely asked to provide, in addition to each answer to each question, a degree of certainty. Objectives: This paper explains how to collect these degrees of certainty, namely with the help of a spectral test applied in oral mode, and how to interpret and use these data in a formative perspective. Description:Metacognitive concepts and indices are developed and illustrated as well as graphical representations. Examples are provided in the domain of diabetic patients education. Conclusions: Spectral analysis of the responses’ qualities is useful to measure individual patients’ degree of mastery as well as to evaluate the efficacy of a training applied to a group of patients. [Bi1 68Ca2O4 delta](RS)[CoO2](1 69) has been obtained by different chimie douce methods and uniaxially or isostatically pressed The influence of these parameters on the thermoelectric properties has been investigated. Contrary to the Seebeck coefficient, which remains unchanged, the electrical conductivity is greatly modified In particular, spray-drying synthesis followed by uniaxial pressing results in an electrical conductivity two times larger than in the case of conventional solid state synthesis. Our results suggest that a narrow particle size distribution is beneficial to the thermoelectric properties of the layered compounds. The spray-drying technique seems to be promising to Improve the electrical conductivity of layered materials. Moreover, this method presents other advantages (homogeneous samples and less energetic processing) which could be interesting to the future manufacturing of thermoelectric devices (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. Dendritic cell (DC) is the generic name of different professional antigen presenting cell sub-populations, which are responsible for the initiation of specific immune responses. Recently, DC have been involved in supporting innate immunity by interacting with various innate lymphocytes, such as natural killer (NK), NKT or γδ T (T cells expressing γδ T cell receptor). The functional links between innate lymphocytes and DC have been investigated widely and different studies demonstrated that the cross-talk between innate lymphocytes and DC was found to be multi-directional, involving not only cell-cell contacts but also soluble factors which lead to lymphocyte activation and DC maturation. The final outcome of these cellular interactions may have a dramatic impact on the quality and strength of the down-stream immune responses, mainly in the context of early responses to tumor cells and infectious agents. Interestingly, DC, NK and γδ T cells also share similar functions, such as antigen uptake and presentation, as well as cytotoxic and tumoricidal activity. In addition, NK and NKT cells have the ability to kill DC. This chapter will focus upon the different aspects of the cross-talk between DC and innate lymphocytes and its key role in all the steps of the immune response. These cellular interactions may be particularly critical in situations where immune surveillance requires efficient early innate responses. [less ▲]

With the availability of high resolution DEMs, relevant and detailed inundation maps may now be routinely computed provided that suited flow models are available. The full 2D flow model presented in this paper has been used to compute such maps on 800 km of the main rivers of the Walloon Region in Belgium. The use of grid spacing of 1 m, similar to the DEM resolution, enables to accurately predict the pattern of flood depth. This is confirmed by several application examples, which also demonstrate the ability of the model to reproduce depth measurements for a wide range of flood discharges without the need for recalibration of the roughness coefficient. The numerical model has been systematically validated by comparison with observations during recent real flood events. It shows a very good agreement with field data, in particular regarding free surface elevations and inundation extension. [less ▲]

A combination of numerical and experimental methods is used to compare the efficiency of two microstructures of Ti5553 titanium alloy in an industrial test case. The test case consists in two parts of sectors of aircraft engine stators linked together by an Inconel bolt and submitted to tensile loading. The efficiency of these microstructures is evaluated by using finite element (FE) models. The chosen FE models take into account elasto-visco-plastic material behaviors, contact with friction (bolt heads/flanges and flange/flange), and the initial bolt tightening. The parameters of the elasto-visco-plastic (EVP) material law are adjusted from experimental results extracted from tensile tests performed on Inconel, and Ti5553 alloys. Viscous properties are observed at different strain rates. The studied alloy is assumed to be plastically isotropic. In order to compare the fracture resistance of both microstructures, a micro-mechanical (damage based) rupture model ([4]) is used as a FE post-processing step. [less ▲]

Electrospray mass spectrometry can be used to detect ligand-DNA noncovalent complexes formed in solution. This chapter describes how to determine equilibrium association constants of the complexes. Particular attention is devoted to describing how to tune an electrospray mass spectrometer using a 12-mer oligodeoxynucleotides duplex in order to perform these experiments. This protocol can then be applied to any nucleic acid structure that can be ionized with electrospray mass spectrometry. [less ▲]
