This paper introduces a new optimization heuristic for the robustification of critical inputs under consideration in many problems. It is shown that it allows to improve significantly the quality and the stability of the results for two classical financial problems, i.e. the Markowitz' portfolio selection problem and the computation of the financial beta. Focus here is on the robust Minimum Covariance Determinant (MCD) estimator which can easily be substituted to the classical estimators of location and scatter. By definition, the computation of this estimator gives rise to a combinatorial optimization problem. We present a new heuristic, called 'RelaxMCD', which is based on a relaxation of the problem to the continuous space. The utility of this approach and the performance of our heuristic, with respect to other competitors, are illustrated through extensive simulations. [less ▲]

Two chemical treatments for lead-210 measurement were compared on the sub-surface samples of a core from an ombrotrophic bog from East Belgium. The classical procedure involves a concentrated acid extraction of polonium. However, this treatment represents substantial health risks together with unknowns regarding both the degree of cleanliness and the Po extraction rate, and most importantly, is rather time consuming. We developed here an improved procedure involving an ashing step prior to acid extraction. This allows substantial improvements such as: 1/ the use of a relatively small amount of acid compared to the classical procedure and 2/ the substantial reduction of a total sample digestion time. Measurements of 210Pb concentrations were conducted by alpha spectrometry. Results show a good agreement of unsupported 210Pb activity obtained for both procedures, although some unknowns remain concerning the adsorption of 210Po on the plastic test tube, the volatilization of a small amount of ash, or the absorption of alpha particle at the alpha source surface. This however should not affect the 210Pb measurement as all the samples are spiked prior to ashing (i.e. the recoveries are fully monitored). Through this study, we are suggesting researchers to follow this new procedure in order to increase safety, cleanliness, better recovery and substantial time gain. [less ▲]

Let I be a finite set of integers and F be a finite set of maps of the form n->k_i n + l_i with integer coefficients. For an integer base k>=2, we study the k-recognizability of the minimal set X of integers containing I and satisfying f(X)\subseteq X for all f in F. In particular, solving a conjecture of Allouche, Shallit and Skordev, we show under some technical conditions that if two of the constants k_i are multiplicatively independent, then X is not k-recognizable for any k>=2. Lesions to the horse’s tendon are very frequent and are a non negligible reason for early retirement of sport and leisure horses. For decades man has been searching for “the” treatment but unfortunately most of the known treatments have empiric bases and very few have actually proven their real efficiency. Diagnostic techniques like ultrasound allows to better evaluate the improvements made in tendonitis therapies. Stem cells and gene therapy are probably the most innovating of them, but their long-term effectiveness still has to stand the test of times. This article gives an overview of the possible treatments of tendonitis today. [less ▲]

In this paper, we describe a new automatic target recognition algorithm for classifying SAR images based on the PiXiT image classifier. It uses randomized sub-windows extraction and extremely randomized trees (extra-trees). This approach requires very little pre-processing of the images, thereby limiting the computational load. It was successfully tested on an extended version of the public standard MSTAR database, that includes targets of interest, false targets, and background clutter. A misclassification rate of about three percent has been achieved. [less ▲]

This study evaluated the contribution of implementation intentions over the constructs of the theory of planned behaviour in testing a confirmatory model explaining the relationships between antecedents of academic achievement for university students. It was found that the effects of intention to perform and its classic antecedents on exams performance were mediated by implementation intentions with a considerable increase of amount of explained variance above the contribution of the constructs of planned behaviour theory. This paper is organized as follows. We first introduce the construct of intention, particularly in the context of the well documented model of the theory of planned behaviour (TPB). The limitation of this model will be explained and a basic distinction it does not consider will be pointed to: forming an intention vs. implementing it. Then we present the Heckhausen and Gollwitzer's Action Phases Model (APM) and the construct of implementation intention. The results of experimental and correlational researches on the predictive power of this construct, especially in the educational domain, will be discussed. Thirdly, we propose an integrative model which fills the gap between TPB and performance by introducing implementation intentions from unwanted inner states. Fourthly, we give the results of an experimental research aiming in testing this model conducted in an educational settings and using a confirmatory design (Structural Equation Modelling). In the end, we insist on the implication of these results for students. [less ▲]

Introduction: The certainty or the doubt, justified or not, a patient has in his knowledge about his illness influences largely his decision to act or, on the contrary, to verify, to ask for help. Nevertheless, in the process of knowledge assessment, in patient education as well as in classical training systems, respondants are too rarely asked to provide, in addition to each answer to each question, a degree of certainty. Objectives: This paper explains how to collect these degrees of certainty, namely with the help of a spectral test applied in oral mode, and how to interpret and use these data in a formative perspective. Description:Metacognitive concepts and indices are developed and illustrated as well as graphical representations. Examples are provided in the domain of diabetic patients education. Conclusions: Spectral analysis of the responses’ qualities is useful to measure individual patients’ degree of mastery as well as to evaluate the efficacy of a training applied to a group of patients. RNA interference-based therapies are dependent on intracellular delivery of siRNA. The release of siRNA from the endosomal compartment may be a rate limiting step in the transfection process. The purpose of this study was to produce pH–responsive nanocarriers made of trimethylchitosan (TMC). To this end, pHsensitive methacrylic acid (MAA) copolymer was added to TMC–siRNA formulations. Four different TMCs associated or not with MAA were evaluated as siRNA carriers. Nanoparticles were characterized in terms of size, surface charge, morphology and interaction with siRNA. A swelling behaviour due to a decrease in pH was observed and was found to be dependent on MAA content in the complexes. In vitro experiments aimed at evaluating how the capacity of the nanocarriers to transfect siRNA in L929 cells was affected by MAA content. Confocal microscopy experiments showed that fluorescent MAA-containing particles exhibit a different distribution pattern inside the cells comparing to their counterpart without this pH-sensitive polymer. Transfection efficiency was investigated by RhoA mRNA expression inhibition. MAA–TMC–siRNA complexes were able to transfect L929 cells with greater efficiency than corresponding TMC–siRNA complexes. This study gives an insight into the opportunity of pH-sensitive nanocarriers for siRNA delivery. Such formulations may represent an attractive strategy to improve endosomal escape of siRNA. By the decisions of treaty of Versailles the inhabitants of the two German "Kreise" Eupen and Malmedy became Belgians in 1920. Since 1919, Belgium had shown its territorial claims on the region by positioning troops there. Which forms did the memory of the War take in the first years after the WW I? How could the people mourn the victims of the war - victims who had fought for the "army of the enemy" of the new "Vaterland"? The paper aims at illustrating the official politics of memory at one hand - e.g. the demolition of the soldiers' momument in Malmedy and the excemption of the military service for four years - and at including more intimate forms of war memory on the other hand. The focus lies on the significance of the war for the political and social communication in Eupen-Malmedy during the interwar period. [less ▲]
