This paper studies the coordinated motion of a group of agents evolving on a Lie group. Left- or right-invariance with respect to the absolute position on the group lead to two different characterizations of relative positions and two associated definitions of coordination (fixed relative positions). Conditions for each type of coordination are derived in the associated Lie algebra. This allows to formulate the coordination problem on Lie groups as consensus in a vector space. Total coordination occurs when both types of coordination hold simultaneously. The discussion in this paper provides a common geometric framework for previously published coordination control laws on SO(3), SE(2) and SE(3). The theory is illustrated on the group of planar rigid motion SE(2). [less ▲]

The flow properties of powders are mainly due to the interplay of cohesive forces and intergrain frictional forces. We have experimentally investigated a "smart granular system" for which the interparticle cohesion can be tuned by a magnetic field B. We show that the rheological features of such a system can be controlled. Indeed, the granular flow can be controlled or even stopped by the magnetic field. Depending on the orientation of B, different dynamical regimes can be obtained like a "dry liquid state" forming conical droplets as well as a "layered soft state". Scaling lows are given for the flow rate outside a funnel as a function of B and for the stopping threshold of the flow as a function of the funnel output diameter D. From this analysis, it appears that the flowing properties are related to the dimensionality of the magnetic aggregates. [less ▲]

We review the properties of the very young (˜ 2 Myr) open cluster NGC 6383. The cluster is dominated by the massive binary HD 159176 (O7 V + O7 V). The distance to NGC 6383 is consistently found to be 1.3 ± 0.1 kpc and the average reddening is determined to be E(bv) = 0.32 ± 0.02. Several pre-main sequence candidates have been identified using different criteria relying on the detection of emission lines, infrared excesses, photometric variability and X-ray emission. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

Infantile pyknocytosis (IP) is a rare hematological entity of newborns. It is a form of hemolytic anemia with unusual red cell morphology: the red blood cells are distorted, irregular, and small with many projections. Spontaneous resolution usually occurs by 4-6months of age. OBSERVATION: We describe the clinical features and biological parameters of 5 cases of IP. The first symptoms were always early jaundice, which required phototherapy. Anemia was severe in all babies and red blood cell transfusion was needed. CONCLUSION: IP is a rare cause of neonatal anemia whose diagnosis is based on a careful peripheral blood smear examination. In our study, anemia was severe and required red blood cell transfusion. Ethnic specificity and familial occurrence are reported in our experience. [less ▲]

Novel 6-substituted 2-oxo-2H-1-benzopyran-3-carboxylic acid derivatives were synthesized and their potency in reducing the invasive behaviour of HT 1080 fibrosarcoma cells was evaluated. Structure-activity relationships were deduced from biological results and will be used in further design of new active compounds. In particular, the acetoxymethyl substituent found at the 6-position of previously described active compounds can be replaced by an acetamidomethyl substituent without loss of potency; while the presence of an aryl ester function at the 3-position was preferred to a thioester or an amide function to induce marked biological activity. This work confirms the interest of aryl esters of 6-substituted coumarin-3-carboxylic acids as potential new anti-cancer agents. [less ▲]

We address the problem of finding indirect overlay paths that reduce the latency between pairs of nodes in an overlay. To this end we propose to rely on an Internet Coordinate System (ICS), namely Vivaldi, to estimate RTTs and help find these interesting detours. We define two initial criteria to illustrate our approach and assess their true/false positive rates. [less ▲]
