We present Spitzer Space Telescope infrared photometry of a secondary eclipse of the hot Neptune GJ 436 b. The observations were obtained using the 8-mum band of the InfraRed Array Camera (IRAC). The data spanning the predicted time of secondary eclipse show a clear flux decrement with the expected shape and duration. The observed eclipse depth of 0.58 mmag allows us to estimate a blackbody brightness temperature of T[SUB]p[/SUB] = 717 ± 35 K at 8 mum. We compare this infrared flux measurement to a model of the planetary thermal emission, and show that this model reproduces properly the observed flux decrement. The timing of the secondary eclipse confirms the non-zero orbital eccentricity of the planet, while also increasing its precision (e = 0.14 ± 0.01). Additional new spectroscopic and photometric observations allow us to estimate the rotational period of the star and to assess the potential presence of another planet. Cassini's Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrograph (UVIS) has completed three years of study of Saturn's atmosphere and auroras. Two long slit spectral channels are used to obtain EUV data from 56.3-118.2 nm and FUV data from 111.5-191.3 nm. 64 spatial pixels along each slit are combined with slit motion to construct spectral images of Saturn. Auroral emissions are seen from electron-excited molecular and atomic hydrogen. In 2007 UVIS obtained data with the spacecraft well out of Saturn's ring plane, permitting us to create images, spectra, and at times movies. We will present an auroral movie from 2007-145 that has been processed to remove flat-fielding artifacts and deconvolved to remove scattering along the slit. The movie shows near co- rotation of N polar auroral features with the planet's rotation. An auroral oval is present. The oval appears doubled on the midnight side. Other images from this year show emissions inside the auroral oval. We will discuss these images and their spectra. Additional images and movies are planned in coming months. [less ▲]

An extended set of Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations of the UV auroral emissions from Jupiter and Saturn has been carried out in three campaigns over Jan.-June 2007. This is by far the most extensive series of remote high resolution imaging of planetary aurora to date, and provides new physical insight into the cause and effect relationships governing the controlling processes for the giant planet auroral emissions. Simultaneous in situ measurements of local solar wind and magnetospheric plasma conditions have been made during two of these campaigns by Cassini at Saturn in Jan. 2007 and by the New Horizons mission approaching Jupiter in Feb. 2007. The UV auroral emission brightness and distributions have also been compared with estimates of the solar wind conditions near each planet extrapolated from near-Earth measurements, which can be verified by comparison with Cassini and New Horizons in situ data. It has been found that there is a good correlation at both planets between total auroral power and solar wind dynamic pressure, at least for the major solar wind disturbances arriving at each planet. At the same time, the nature of the auroral brightenings differs between Jupiter and Saturn, and the source regions of auroral activity are quite different in the two magnetospheres. In this presentation, the HST and solar wind data and the nature of the correlations will be presented. The physical significance of the correlations will be discussed, based on the much denser set of measurements now available. [less ▲]

Context: Detecting the presence of circumstellar dust around nearby solar-type main sequence stars is an important pre-requisite for the design of future life-finding space missions such as ESA's Darwin or NASA's Terrestrial Planet Finder (TPF). The high Antarctic plateau may provide appropriate conditions to perform such a survey from the ground. Aims: We investigate the performance of a nulling interferometer optimised for the detection of exozodiacal discs at Dome C, on the high Antarctic plateau, and compare it to the expected performance of similar instruments at temperate sites. Methods: Based on the currently available measurements of the atmospheric turbulence characteristics at Dome C, we adapt the GENIEsim software (Absil et al. 2006, A&A, 448, 787) to simulate the performance of a nulling interferometer on the high Antarctic plateau. To feed a realistic instrumental configuration into the simulator, we propose a conceptual design for ALADDIN, the Antarctic L-band Astrophysics Discovery Demonstrator for Interferometric Nulling. We assume that this instrument can be placed above the 30-m thick boundary layer, where most of the atmospheric turbulence originates. Results: We show that an optimised nulling interferometer operating on a pair of 1-m class telescopes located 30 m above the ground could achieve a better sensitivity than a similar instrument working with two 8-m class telescopes at a temperate site such as Cerro Paranal. The detection of circumstellar discs about 20 times as dense as our local zodiacal cloud seems within reach for typical Darwin/TPF targets in an integration time of a few hours. Moreover, the exceptional turbulence conditions significantly relax the requirements on real-time control loops, which has favourable consequences on the feasibility of the nulling instrument. Conclusions: The perspectives for high dynamic range, high angular resolution infrared astronomy on the high Antarctic plateau look very promising. [less ▲]

We present the first UV airglow observations of Titan's atmosphere by the Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrograph (UVIS) on Cassini. The known UV emissions of Titan have been examined with higher spectral resolution (0.4 nm FWHM) by the Cassini UVIS than in the past by the Voyager Ultraviolet Spectrometer (UVS) (3.0 nm FWHM). The UVIS observations, confirming Voyager UVS results, have shown that molecular nitrogen is the major constituent of the upper atmosphere of Titan. Using one spectral channel in the EUV from 56--118 nm and one in the FUV from 112--191 nm, the UVIS observed the disk on 13 December, 2004. The combined EUV and FUV spectral region is a probe of the stratosphere-mesosphere-thermosphere-exosphere region from about 300--2000 km. The EUV spectrum consists of three band systems of N2 (b {1}Πu, b' {1}Σu+, c{4'} {1}Σ{u+}--X {1}Σ{g+}), while the FUV spectrum consists of one N2 (a {1}Πg--X {1}Σ{g+}). The UVIS observations reveal that the c{4'}(0)--X(0) vibrational band near 95.8 nm is suppressed, and that N \sc{i} multiplets near 95.32 and 96.45 nm are present instead. Magnetospheric particle excitation is weak on this orbit, since the nightside EUV spectrum shows no observable N2 emission features and only H Lyman-β. The absence of significant darkside emission demonstrates that nitrogen emissions are predominantly excited on this orbit by photoelectrons near 900 km in the thermosphere. Above 145 nm most of the observed signal is due to sunlight reflected by N2 in the Titan mesosphere-stratosphere and modified by aerosol and hydrocarbon absorption. Mixing ratios of C2H2, C4H2, C2H4 and tholins have been derived from the reflected sunlight emission between 145 and 190 nm, using a Rayleigh scattering model. Assuming that the energy deposition at these wavelengths occurs near 300 km, these mixing ratios are in good agreement with recent photochemical models and previous Voyager observations in the IR. We also present the first geometric albedo measurement of Titan from 150--190 nm. [less ▲]

We present the first UV airglow observations of Titan's atmosphere by the Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrograph (UVIS) on Cassini. Using one spectral channel in the EUV from 561-1182 Å and one in the FUV from 1115-1913 Å, UVIS observed the disk on 13 December, 2004 at low solar activity. The EUV spectrum consists of three band systems of N[SUB]2[/SUB] (b [SUP]1[/SUP]∏[SUB]u[/SUB], b' [SUP]1[/SUP]∑[SUB]u[/SUB] [SUP]+[/SUP], c[SUB]4[/SUB]' [SUP]1[/SUP]∑[SUB]u[/SUB] [SUP]+[/SUP] -> X [SUP]1[/SUP]∑[SUB]g[/SUB] [SUP]+[/SUP]), while the FUV spectrum consists of one (a [SUP]1[/SUP]∏[SUB]g[/SUB] -> X [SUP]1[/SUP]∑[SUB]g[/SUB] [SUP]+[/SUP]). Both the EUV and FUV spectra contain many N I and N II multiplets that are produced primarily by photodissociative ionization. Spectral intensities of the N[SUB]2[/SUB] c[SUB]4[/SUB]' [SUP]1[/SUP]∑[SUB]u[/SUB] [SUP]+[/SUP](v' = 0) -> X [SUP]1[/SUP]∑[SUB]g[/SUB] [SUP]+[/SUP](v'' = 0-2) progression from 950-1010 Å are resolved for the first time. The UVIS observations reveal that the c[SUB]4[/SUB]' [SUP]1[/SUP]∑[SUB]u[/SUB] [SUP]+[/SUP](0) -> X [SUP]1[/SUP]∑[SUB]g[/SUB] [SUP]+[/SUP] (0) vibrational band near 958 Å is weak and undetectable, and that N I multiplets near 953.2 and 964.5 Å are present instead. Magnetospheric particle excitation may be weak or sporadic, since the nightside EUV spectrum on this orbit shows no observable nitrogen emission features and only H Ly-β. [less ▲]

We present early Very Large Telescope UV-Visual Echelle Spectrograph (VLT UVES) high-resolution spectra of the afterglow of GRB 030329 at redshift z=0.16867+/-0.00001. In contrast to other spectra from this burst, both emission and absorption lines were detected. None of them showed any temporal evolution. From the emission lines, we determine the properties of the host galaxy, which has a star formation rate (SFR) of 0.198 M[SUB]solar[/SUB] yr[SUP]-1[/SUP] and a low metallicity of 0.17 Z[SUB]solar[/SUB]. Given the low total stellar host mass logM[SUB]*[/SUB]=7.75+/-0.15 M[SUB]solar[/SUB] and an absolute luminosity m[SUB]B[/SUB]=-16.29, we derive specific SFRs (SSFR) of logSFR=-8.5 yr[SUP]-1[/SUP] and SFR = 15.1 M[SUB]solar[/SUB] yr[SUP]-1[/SUP] L[SUP]-1[/SUP][SUB]*[/SUB]. This fits well into the picture of GRB hosts as being low-mass, low-metallicity, actively star-forming galaxies. The Mg II and Mg I absorption lines from the host show multiple narrow (Doppler width b=5-12 km s[SUP]-1[/SUP]) components spanning a range of v~230 km s[SUP]-1[/SUP], mainly blueshifted compared to the redshift from the emission lines. These components are likely probing outflowing material of the host galaxy, which could arise from former galactic superwinds, driven by supernovae from star-forming regions. Similar features have been observed in QSO spectra. The outflowing material has high column densities of logN[SUB]MgII[/SUB]=13.99+/-0.04 cm[SUP]-2[/SUP] and logN[SUB]MgI[/SUB]=12.39+/-0.04 cm[SUP]-2[/SUP] and the nonvariability of the column densities implies a distance of at least 560 pc from the burst, further supporting an outflow scenario. Objectives To examine the evolution of quality of life (QOL) in demented subjects at base-line, one and 2 years later and to determine clinical variables associated with QOL. Method Longitudinal study of a cohort of 127 subjects living at home or in a long-term care institution. A QOL measure (Alzheimer Disease Related Quality of Life; ADRQL) was administered three times. In addition, several clinical instruments (MMSE, IADL, ADL and CDR/M) were also administered. Results ADRQL data analysis did not reveal significant modifications of QOL over the 2-year period, whereas results from clinical instruments showed a significant deterioration. On the group, the variations of ADRQL scores were limited, with some improvement after the first year followed by some deterioration after the second year. On the other hand, ADRQL scores fluctuated every year by at least 10 points for more than 50% of subjects. With dementia evolution, it was observed that the clinical variables were more strongly correlated with ADRQL scores and were more significant predictors. This varied from 5.9% (MMSE) in 2002 to 40.01 % in 2004 (MMSE and CDR/M). Conclusions QOL did not develop in a strictly linear manner following the deterioration of clinical state. This suggests that the evolution of QOL is also determined by other variables relating to the physical and social environment of the patients. En Belgique, la Fondation Roi Baudouin est une référence en matière de développement du bien-être des citoyens. Depuis très longtemps, elle est aussi un des piliers belges en matière du développement d'activités utilisant les vertus sociales du sport et son rôle pour le bien-être de la population. L'Université de Liège a été chargée de réaliser une étude prospective visant à identifier des pistes d'interventions originales susceptibles de rencontrer les besoins actuels des acteurs de terrain dans le domaine du "sport social" et de stimuler le développement de ce dernier en Communauté Wallonie-Bruxelles. La première étape a porté sur l'établissement d'un état des lieux non exhaustif des initiatives utilisant le sport 'activité physique en général) comme outil social. Sur base des informations fournies par les acteurs de terrain, il était aussi question d'identifier les raisons justifiant le développement limité des nitiatives locales ou régionales dans ce secteur d'activité et les moyens qui devraient être mis en oeuvre pour remédier à cette situation. Dans une deuxième étape, un groupe de praticiens s'est réuni en vue de faire émerger les pistes d'actions dans lesquelles la Fondation Roi Baudouin pourrait s'investir afin de rencontrer les attentes réelles des citoyens. Although migraineurs appear in general to be hypersensitive to external stimuli, they maybe also have increased daytime sleepiness and complain of fatigue. Neurophisiological studies between attacks have shown that for a number of different sensory modalities the migrainous brain is characterised by a lack of habituation of evoked responses. Whether this is due to increased cortical hyperexcitability, possibly due to decreased inhibition, or to an abnormal responsivity of the cortex due a decreased preactivation level remains disputed. Studies using transcranial magnetic stimulation in particular have yielded contradictory results. We will review here the available data on cortical excitability obtained with different methodological approaches in patients over the migraine cycle. We will show that these data congruently indicate that the sensory cortices of migraineurs react excessively to repetitive, but not to single, stimuli and that the controversy above hyper- versus hypo-excitability is merely a semantic misunderstanding. Describing the migrainous brain as 'hyperresponsive' would fit most of the available data. Deciphering the precise cellular and molecular underpinnings of this hyperresponsivity remains a challenge for future research. We propose, as a working hypothesis, that a thalamo-cortical dysrhythmia might be the culprit. [less ▲]

Aims:The principal aim of this project is to determine the structural parameters of the rapidly pulsating subdwarf B star PG 0911+456 from asteroseismology. Our work forms part of an ongoing programme to constrain the internal characteristics of hot B subdwarfs with the long-term goal of differentiating between the various formation scenarios proposed for these objects. So far, a detailed asteroseismic interpretation has been carried out for 6 such pulsators, with apparent success. First comparisons with evolutionary theory look promising, however it is clear that more targets are needed for meaningful statistics to be derived. Methods: The observational pulsation periods of PG 0911+456 were extracted from rapid time-series photometry using standard Fourier analysis techniques. Supplemented by spectroscopic estimates of the star's mean atmospheric parameters, they were used as a basis for the “forward modelling” approach in asteroseismology. The latter culminates in the identification of one or more “optimal” models that can accurately reproduce the observed period spectrum. This naturally leads to an identification of the oscillations detected in terms of degree ℓ and radial order k, and infers the structural parameters of the target. Results: The high S/N low- and medium resolution spectroscopy obtained led to a refinement of the atmospheric parameters for PG 0911+456, the derived values being T_eff = 31 940 ± 220 K, log g = 5.767 ± 0.029, and log He/H = -2.548 ± 0.058. From the photometry it was possible to extract 7 independent pulsation periods in the 150-200 s range with amplitudes between 0.05 and 0.8% of the star's mean brightness. There was no indication of fine frequency splitting over the 68-day time baseline, suggesting a very slow rotation rate. An asteroseismic search of parameter space identified several models that matched the observed properties of PG 0911+456 well, one of which was isolated as the “optimal” model on the basis of spectroscopic and mode identification considerations. All the observed pulsations are identified with low-order acoustic modes with degree indices ℓ = 0,1,2 and 4, and match the computed periods with a dispersion of only 0.26%, typical of the asteroseismological studies carried out to date for this type of star. The inferred structural parameters of PG 0911+456 are T_eff = 31 940 ± 220 K (from spectroscopy), log {g} = 5.777 ± 0.002, Mast/Msun = 0.39 ± 0.01, log{M_env/Mast} = -4.69 ± 0.07, R/Rsun = 0.133 ± 0.001 and L/Lsun = 16.4 ± 0.8. We also derive the absolute magnitude MV = 4.82 ± 0.04 and a distance d = 930.3 ± 27.4 pc. [less ▲]

Background Use of preventive therapy for migraine is often recommended for only 6-9 months, but no randomised, placebo-controlled trials have investigated migraine frequency after the end of prophylaxis. We assessed the effects of discontinuation of topiramate after a treatment period of 6 months. Methods 818 patients who have migraines were enrolled from 88 clinics in 21 countries. After a 4-8-week lead-in period, patients received topiramate in a 26-week open-label phase. Daily dose was increased from 25 mg to 100 mg in steps of 25 mg every week; the dose could be adjusted further in the range 50-200 mg/day, but was stable for the final 4 weeks. Patients were randomly assigned to continue this dose or switch to placebo for a 26-week double-blind phase. The primary endpoint was the difference in number of days with migraine during the last 4 weeks of the double-blind phase compared with the last 4 weeks of the open-label phase. Analysis was by intention to treat. This trial is registered with EudraCT, number 2005-000321-29. Findings 559 patients (68.3%) completed the open-label phase; 514 entered the double-blind phase and were assigned to topiramate (n=255) or placebo (n=259). The mean increase in number of migraine days was greater in the placebo group (1.19 days in 4 weeks, 95% CI 0.71 to 1.66; p < 0.0001) than in the topiramate group (0.10, -0.36 to 0.56; p=0.5756; mean difference between groups -1.09, -1.75 to -0.43). Patients in the placebo group had a greater number of days on acute medication than did those in the topiramate group (mean difference between groups -0.95, -1.49 to -0.41; p=0.0007). Quality of life, as assessed by the MIDAS questionnaire, fell in the placebo group but remained stable in the topiramate group. Patients were more satisfied with the efficacy of topiramate than with that of placebo, whereas satisfaction with tolerability was similar in both treatment groups. Interpretation Sustained benefit was reported after discontinuation of topiramate, although number of migraine days did increase. These findings suggest that patients should be treated for 6 months, with the option to continue to 12 months in some patients. [less ▲]
