Synthesis of an asymmetric tadpole-shaped aliphatic copolyester consisting of a poly(epsilon-caprolactone) ring and two poly(L-lactide) tails was reported for the first time. First, a high molecular weight cyclic PCL macroinitiator (Mn = 31,000) was prepared by intramolecular photocross-linking of "living" chains. Polymerization of L-lactide was resumed by the tin dialkoxide containing macrocycles, thus making the targeted tadpole-shaped copolyester available. A preliminary investigation of the crystallization of these copolyesters was carried out by differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy. [less ▲]

This paper proposes a novel method for the scoring of sleep apneas and hypopneas (SAHs) based on the recording and the analysis of the midsagittal jaw movements. Continuous wavelet transform was used to delineate events which were likely to contain the SAHs, while hidden markov models (HMMs) classified events. Considering 28 recordings from which awakenings were discarded, the method detected SAHs with a sensitivity and a specificity of 82.2% and 78.3% respectively. Obstructive, central and mixed respiratory events were distinguished fairly accurately. The jaw motion is hence a reliable marker of respiratory efforts and may suffice by itself to score SAHs. A novel, multidimensional on-line SPE-LC method with electrochemical detection is described for the fully automated and direct analysis of the catecholamines norepinephrine, epinephrine and dopamine in urine. The integrated extractive clean-up of the raw biofluid is based on a SPE-column packed with restricted access material (RAM) which is modified with the affinity ligand nitrophenylboronic acid. The method was fully validated according to a recent approach based on an accuracy profile. The acceptance limits were set at +/- 15% of the nominal concentration values. The method was found accurate over a concentration range from 15 to 500 mu g/l for norepinephrine, from 5 to 500 mu g/l for epinephrine and from 50 to 500 mu g/l for dopamine. The relative risk for the use of the validated method in routine analysis was also assessed based on this validation strategy. It was found that at most 3.5% of future sample measurements will fall outside the acceptance limits. This demonstrates the high reliability of the analytical method described.
