Where distributed agents must share voluminous set mem- bership information, Bloom filters provide a compact, though lossy, way for them to do so. Numerous recent networking papers have examined the trade-offs between the bandwidth consumed by the transmission of Bloom filters, and the er- ror rate, which takes the form of false positives, and which rises the more the filters are compressed. In this paper, we introduce the retouched Bloom filter (RBF), an extension that makes the Bloom filter more flexible by permitting the removal of selected false positives at the expense of gen- erating random false negatives. We analytically show that RBFs created through a random process maintain an overall error rate, expressed as a combination of the false positive rate and the false negative rate, that is equal to the false positive rate of the corresponding Bloom filters. We further provide some simple heuristics that decrease the false posi- tive rate more than than the corresponding increase in the false negative rate, when creating RBFs. Finally, we demon- strate the advantages of an RBF over a Bloom filter in a dis- tributed network topology measurement application, where information about large stop sets must be shared among route tracing monitors. We compare and evaluate different methods to infer groups of correlated failures. These methods try to group failure events occurring nearly simultaneously in clusters. Indeed if several failures occur nearly at the same moment in a network, it is possible that these failures have the same root cause. The input data of our algorithms are IP failure notifications that can be provided by several sources. We consider two sources: IS-IS Link State Packets (LSPs) and Syslog messages. Our first results on the Abilene and GÉANT networks show that the inference methods behave differently and that using IS-IS LSPs provides more accurate results than using Syslog messages. [less ▲]

Background. Chronic alcohol abuse is associated with a wide range of cognitive deficits. However, little is known about memory for real-life events (autobiographical memory) in non-amnesic alcoholic patients. The purpose of this study was to investigate (a) non-amnesic alcoholics' ability to recall specific autobiographical memories and (b) their subjective experience when they access specific memories.Method. Twenty non-amnesic (without Korsakoff syndrome) recently detoxified alcoholics and 20 healthy controls completed the Autobiographical Memory Test (AMT), which assesses the frequency of specific (versus general) memories recalled in response to cue words, and the Memory Characteristics Questionnaire (MCQ), which assesses subjective experience (e.g. the amount of sensory and contextual details experienced) when remembering specific events.Results. Alcoholic patients recalled specific memories less frequently and general memories more frequently than healthy controls. Nevertheless, when a specific past event was accessed, alcoholic patients subjectively experienced as many sensory and contextual details as controls.Conclusions. These findings suggest that non-amnesic alcoholics have difficulties strategically accessing event-specific autobiographical knowledge, which might result from changes in frontal lobe function that are associated with alcoholism. The aim of concrete surface preparation prior to repair is to obtain a surface with properties close to that of the bulk concrete. In this paper, the results of an investigation intended to evaluate the mechanical degradation induced by different surface preparation techniques are presented. Optical microscope observations clearly show that more cracking is induced with jack-hammers than with the other investigated techniques and that the cracking density increases with the hammer weight. While more information is needed to evaluate quantitatively the effects of concrete removal operations, it appears from the reported results that techniques such as sandblasting, scarifying and water jetting are preferable, as they clearly leave much less defects in the substrate. Nowadays, the management of ectopic pregnancy should be codified as often as possible. Two types of treatment are possible. One surgical and the other medical. Our study is concerned with a series of 97 patients hospitalized for suspicion of ectopic pregnancy for whom the risk factors and treatment were analyzed. Our conclusion is that the medical treatment should be more frequently proposed and surgery should prefer the conservative treatment whenever it is still possible. [less ▲]

Numerous studies suggest a cognitive bias for threat-related material in delusional ideation. However, few studies have examined this bias using a memory task. We investigated the influence of delusion-proneness on identity and expression memory for angry and happy faces. Participants high and low in delusion-proneness were presented with happy and angry faces and were later asked to recognise the same faces displaying a neutral expression. They also had to remember what the initial expressions of the faces had been. Remember/know/guess judgments were asked for both identity and expression memory. Results showed that delusion-prone participants better recognised the identity of angry faces compared to non-delusional participants. Also, this difference between the two groups was mainly due to a greater number of remember responses in delusion-prone participants. These findings extend previous studies by showing that delusions are associated with a memory bias for threat-related stimuli. [less ▲]

A study is presented on the crystallization of ornithine acetyltransferase from yeast, which catalyzes the fifth step in microbial arginine synthesis. The use of the counter-diffusion technique removes the disorder present in one dimension in crystals grown by either the batch or hanging-drop techniques. This makes the difference between useless crystals and crystals that allow successful determination of the structure of the protein. The crystals belong to space group P4, with unit-cell parameters a = b = 66.98, c = 427.09 angstrom, and a data set was collected to 2.76 angstrom. [less ▲]

Background. The spectral entropy of the electroencephalogram has been proposed to monitor the depth of anaesthesia. State Entropy (SE) reflects the level of hypnosis. Response Entropy (RE), computed from electroencephalogram and facial muscle activity, reflects the response to nociceptive stimulation. We evaluated the effect of rocuronium on Bispectral Index (TM) (BIS) and entropy responses to laryngoscopy. Methods. A total of 25 patients were anaesthetized with propofol using a target-controlled infusion. At steady state, they randomly received 0.6 mg kg(-1) rocuronium (R) or saline (S). After 3 min, a 20 s laryngoscopy was applied. BIS, RE and SE were recorded continuously and averaged over 1 min during baseline, at steady state, 2 min after R or S administration (R/S+2) and 0, 1, 2 and 3 min after laryngoscopy (L0, L1, L2, L3). Results. At R/S+2, the RE-SE gradient was higher in Group S than in Group R. Laryngoscopy provoked an increase in BIS, RE and SE. Comparing R/S+2 and L0 values in Groups R and S, BIS increased from 43 (6) to 49 (8) and 42 (9) to 51 (15), SE increased from 43 (7) to 50 (8) and 41 (10) to 55 (12), and RE increased from 46 (8) to 54 (9) and 47 (12) to 66 (15), respectively. BIS and SE did not differ between groups. At L0, RE and RE-SE were higher in Group S [66 (15) and 11 (4), respectively] than in Group R [54 (9) and 4 (2), respectively]. Conclusions. Rocuronium alters the RE-SE gradient and the RE and RE-SE responses to laryngoscopy. Muscle relaxation may confound interpretation of entropy monitoring. [less ▲]

We propose a multi-dimensional strategy, associating immunodetection to a protein fractionating two-dimensional liquid chromatography tool, for serological characterization of microbial antigens. The originality of such immunoproteomic approaches resides in their application in large-scale studies for rapid serotyping of micro-organisms, evaluation of immunomes and could be proposed in the development and monitoring of vaccines.
